Monsoonal thunderstorm at 4am, Darwin. / Rollieflex SL66, Fuji Velvia film. The orange color is created by smoke from fires which are common at that time of year. It is a time exposure though, so many of the ‘in cloud’ lightning flashes illuminate the cloud progressively during exposure of about 2-3 minutes. So it’s not exactly the same as what the eye sees at any one moment. © Ern Mainka
Also available as in long sleeve for those cold Darwin nights…
The thunderstorm in this photograph was taken on the top-end wetlands late in the build up season…only weeks before this area was a dustbowl, yet weeks later it becomes a floodplain ! As the storm surged across the lush plains it dumped heavy rain and some shortlived reprieving cool winds. / / EOS A2, Fuji Velvia 50. / ©T.Middleton2007 —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / / / / see more of my weather related photography by clicking on the preview image below. / / / /

Taken in the Northern Territory, Australia. Every other tree on this stretch of coastline was a green palm, this was only the exception and I couldn’t resist it. See my video on YouTube

I’ve only been to Darwin once – in the summer of 1997 to visit my brother. I timed the trip to maximise storm potential though opportunities remained limited while I was there. Fortunately this storm put out some nice lightning near Darwin Airport.
I’ve just bought my first Ukulele inspired by the fantastic Barnkickers (v=t7qdwI7TVe8) and brilliant Julie Nunes (v=lRdju_M-MF8) as seen on Youtube. The T-Rex was genetically designed to play Ukulele, but became extict 65 million years before its invention.

I’ve got a few shots of this sunset in Darwin, hard to choose the best one, but the fisherman in this one I like, adds magnitude. (to the left if you can’t see him!) Canon Ixus 430
In mid-July 1837 Darwin started his “B” notebook on Transmutation of Species, and on page 36 wrote “I think” above the first evolutionary tree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Darwin

Don’t have a t-shirt ready to celebrate Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday? Then get your special, exclusive limited-edition tshirt to wear for a whole year! Wear this and pay homage to the man who’s genius shed so much light on the darkness of ignorance. His grand notion was the gradual evolution over long periods of time by the natural selection of those varieties of an organism slightly better adapted to the environment (via random genetic mutation) and hence more likely to produce descendants. Combined with the discoveries of the cellular and molecular basis of genetics, Darwin’s theory of evolution has become the dominant unifying concept of modern biology. The explanatory power of Darwin’s idea has even caused geneticist and evolutionary biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky to remark “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution”. For those interested, part of my design uses an image of Charles Darwin, printed as a satirical caricature in ‘The Hornet’ magazine in 1871. I thought it suitably ironic considering such common utterances of the time as “Descended from the apes? My dear, let us hope that it is not true, but if it is, let us pray that it does not become widely known” (wife of the Bishop of Worcester). FOR THE LOVE OF SCIENCE AND NATURAL HISTORY, I AM SELLING THIS TEE WITHOUT ANY MARKUP.
