  • This is one of the oldesst churches in St. John’s. I thought the bare tree branches added to the mysterious and eerie feeling of it. / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / /

  • This is the old general hospital… / / It was built in 1897 and was home to Newfoundlands first operating room. The hospital has been closed and condemed for many many years now. Rumor has it that many dark and hideous things were done behind its doors, things that are better left forgotten… Only memories are left now that can haunt its dark and terrifying hallways. / / Another view of The Old General: / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / /

  • Another in my series of the Old General Hospital. This is of the interior hallway leading into the bowels of the sinister and dark sanitorium. I didn’ t have a flashlight becasue this was spur of the moment. So I had to use my camera flash to illuminate the long dark hallways that have many rooms and other halls leading from this main corridor. I crept along hugging the wall working my way deeper into the dungeon like structure. My imagination was going wild as I visualized the scenes of countless horror movies and their macabre scenes. I could almost feel the horror of its previous occupants as the darkness enveloped me; yet I dared go a little further just to get that picture of what lay beyond… / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography /

  • The ruins of the Redcliff Radar Station. This is the outside of the former command center. All the buildings are now crumbling and in ruin. The station has been abandoned since 1961. Radar operators in the AC&W Squadron tracked the movements of aircraft sighted and passed speed, height and direction information to a Direction Centre (DC) and fighter interceptor squadrons. Fighter aircraft could be airborne in minutes after an alarm was given, and they closed in on unidentified planes by means of direction provided by the radar operators. Another of the Red Cliff functions was furnishing navigational aid to friendly aircraft operating in the area. Their detection of May-Day calls contributed to quick search and rescue efforts. / More in this series / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:16 / For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: / Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / Canon 400d / /

  • I went to the cemetery today to just enjoy the peace and serenity. My wife and I walked through and read the old head stones that dated as far back as the very early 1800’s. It’s hard to not imagine the lives of these people and what it was like on earth in their time. What lives they led and adventures they had… then your mind turns to those they left behind. This headstone is the burial place of a husband and wife from 1921 and 1927. After all these years someone still leaves flowers on their graves in remembrance. / / / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography /

  • The Tragic History Behind These Shots / I just had to revisit the abandoned farmhouse where I shot the image The Tenant / / / / This is a view from the kitchen looking in from the outside… the windows are all beat out of the house and you cannot get to the kitchen from the inside because the floor is unstable and you’ll probably end up in the basement. So I had to improvise and go outside to get this shot. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / More In This Series / / / / / / / / / / / / /

Over this past summer I have been infatuated with a run down farmhouse. It’s condition left much to the imagination. The old farmhouse is about a 2 hour drive from my house and whenever the opportunity arose to photograph it… I came running. I had the opportunity to photograph it 3 times this summer. / / Every time I see the old house my imagination gets going. I took all these images before I knew of its history. / / Well I finally got some confirmation on its history. / / So here it is: / / Originally I thought the history of this house belonged to another house fairly close to this one…. but I was wrong. This old farmhouse used to house a family of 4. The husband had been away for some time (working) and when he had returned home he found his wife in bed with another. His wife ended up taking the children and leaving him. It wasn’t long after this that the husband when downstairs and shot & killed himself. The house had since been boarded up and left to the elements. It is in a very small community so no one wanted to live in the house after the tragic events. / / It is a very tragic story and it just got me thinking that so often we come across these finds and to us they are just great images that stir our imaginations but to some they are tragic memories. I wonder how many more of our shots hold a story. I will not return to this old homestead… somehow it just wouldn’t feel right, now that I know its sad story. / / Here are the images I took of the Farmhouse… / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • I found another abandoned farm house yesterday… everything was left as it was. There were still books in the bookcase and dishes in the cupboard. I am a little nervous on entering this one because it is REALLY deteriorated. / / / You never know what lurks in the shadows… / / Canon 400D w/ Canon 10-22mm lens / 3 shots (raw) / Photomatix / Lightroom & cs3 / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / BEST VIEWED LARGER / / Click HERE for more of my Series on abandonment / / / / Click HERE for more of my Series on abandonment / / .

  • Inspired by Joshua Hoffine I decided to create a horror themed birthday card. My nephew and grandson (by marriage) are both turning two soon and it reminds me how quickly time passes and how fleeting life is. I purchased the skull (affectionately known as Yorrick) for halloween last year and I have been walking past it on a daily basis trying to think of some fun way to use it in a photo. This is one of the ideas I had but you can be sure to see more of him if this rain keeps me indoors and grasping at creative motivations. Photo was taken in natural light with some fill flash from the camera.
