Sometimes faeries take humans away to beautiful, magical places but sometimes, the places they take us are dark and not so beautiful. This was done for a project themed “Fear’s Playground.” It’s based on a nightmare I had a few years ago where this malevolent nixie was terrorizing a small town and killing off young men. The dream started with her drowning a surfer so that’s the scene I illustrated here. It was actually a rather terrifying dream—I guess because I have such a strong fear of drowning.

Soaring to a celestial kingdom, Heaven cries for all of those who will never open their eyes, never see love, never know true happiness…. Heaven’s Cry took 7 hours, which is about 3 hours longer than my average amount of time on a piece of work….the wings alone took 3 hours….pencil on bristol board, i am very happy with the results….

In modern English, the term ghost ship has come to stand for at least one of three separate definitions, all of which involving unexplained circumstances. Historically, the term has been used to refer to reported sightings of apparitions over water that have appeared in the form of maritime sailing ships, often after having previously been known to have sunk, or to derelict vessels found floating with no crew. Full Moons are traditionally associated with temporal insomnia, insanity and various magical phenomena such as lycanthropy. Psychologists, however, have found that there is no strong evidence for effects on human behavior around the time of a full moon. They find that studies are generally not consistent, with some showing a positive effect and others showing a negative effect (hence the terms lunacy and lunatic) Many neopagans hold a monthly ritual called an Esbat at each full moon, while some people practicing traditional Chinese religions prepare their ritual offerings to their ancestors and deities on every full and new moon

Crow serves as the gatekeeper to the void, the void being the formless world of spirit. Crow can travel between the spirit world and the phenomenal or physical world of reality. Crow’s black feathers retain elements of the substance of the void with their subtle, fluctuating iridescence. There are many stories from many cultures that talk about how Crow played an important role in the development and evolution of humanity…including the bringing of light out of the darkness. This painting depicts Crow in the between space of spirit and the physical world. I worked on this piece while at a painting residency at Vermont Studio Center in 2008. This is one of the first paintings that I felt really spoke directly to me and had a consciousness of its own. I believe all my paintings, when I am working on them, are alive in some way. But usually they simply resonate with the energy that I focus on when I paint them. This painting was unique and individual and had its own personality and energy independent of my own. I talked to this painting. She told me what she wanted.
