“DARE TO BE DIFFERENT” makes the perfect gift for the independent individual in your life. Could that be you? The image features a photograph of a real White Raven (also known as a “Spirit Raven” by local Haida people) born in May, 2008 on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. He is one of two rare white and 3 black Ravens born to 2 accepting (black) parents. The two rare birds are not albino which is what makes them so unusual. Their eyes are quite blue. All 5 siblings are getting along extremely well and all are thriving. White Ravens are very rare and hold sacred meaning for many groups and cultures throughout the World, including Native American Indian, Celtic, Norse and Wiccans. This artwork is another tribute to these remarkably intelligent and friendly birds. 50% proceeds from all sales go to the Mountainaire Avian Society in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.

On the weekend I threw and gave away about half of my clothing, and 26 bags of other stuff I no longer use. I wanted the space more than the stuff, if that makes sense? Space to move, space to think, space to grow into. And as I piled things into bags I reminisced about where it had all come from, the stories which surrounded my possessions. In my prime time, I was somewhat truth or dare obsessed. It was my favorite way to meet new people – right down to business. What do you fear? loathe? How far would you go? What last made you cry? And with weekly games of truth or dare, it became a ritual to write down the best ones onto squares of cardboard. Later on, those cards, all beaten and torn, were typed and laminated onto the back of playing cards and passed around friendships for others to use. A deck of questions, poking into people’s souls. I’ve carried them around for years now. And yesterday, I threw them away. I expected to regret it straight away, but I didn’t. Because it isn’t the end of truth or dare, just the start of a new game. Anyone want to play?

This particular daffy stood out for me in the original photo, he seemed to be reaching for an extra share of sunlight over his buddies. Why this image was created / I wanted to challenge myself in the self-portrait arena. I thought it would be a great challenge to see if i could, convincingly, create a picture of me, touching me. The end result . . . sensual weirdness and a bit of auto-erotic splendor wink. How this image was created / I shot 2 self-portraits in my studio and scaled one self-portrait to be a little taller than the other, for a more realistic effect. I used the reflection off of a stainless steel elevator for the background and added in a few clouds around the feet. I then merged everything together in Adobe Photoshop. About this Image / I wanted this image to have an emerging from a dream and timeless kind of visual aesthetic. I am also a huge fan of Helmut Newton and find myself drawn toward creating images that are dynamic and sexually charged YET detached at the same time . . . hence the vacant stares and mannequin-ish skin. This one is not in the charity series. I took it at Port Melbourne because I thought it served as a great analogy for adventure. It captured the last moment of contact with the known before leaping off into the unknown.
