Waiting For Doc – by RD Riccoboni ™ portrait of three Labs. Three family members waiting for their master to return. Sometimes the slightest shift in the way you look at things, / a seemingly insignificant change in perspective can alter your life forever, / Author Unknown Color is the first thing you notice about my work. What makes it ‘pop’ is the placement of color and texture. The primary colors in my palette are derived from the colors in the original rainbow flag which represent sexuality, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony and spirit. As a painter I am a visual storyteller. A message comes with the art – perhaps it is playful, calming, erotic, disturbing, political, or even sacred. I like to flirt with the issues and experiences we face in everyday life, the things we do and the places we go that define our lives. Whether positive, humorous, or thought provoking, my work portrays events people relate to while creating a sense of place for the viewer. RD. Riccoboni RD Riccoboni ™ is an innovative American-born painter (California, 1960), influenced by his early years living in the suburbs of New York City. A self-taught artist, he credits encouragement by family and teachers for his drive and inspiration. Riccoboni’s paintings on canvas and paper depict his travels and local interest. Subjects include California landscape, cityscape, portraiture, street-scenes, public events, and everyday happenings and friends. His palette is derived from the bold colors of the original rainbow flag. Colors that represent, sexuality, healing, sunshine, nature, art, harmony, and spirit. Now – this is REALLY an image from my past… the primary image here is one I recently found in an old box. I took it approximately 20 years ago and I can’t even remember what camera I may have used to take it. At that time and in that life I was working as a ceramic artist. It was a lonely occupation – alone in my studio making pot after pot most of the time – but my constant companion for some of those years was this wonderful Great Dane dog – Mischa. He came everywhere with me. Every morning before work we would go for a 4 km run together along Merri Creek and around the parks of Yarra Bend… he was a very fit dog, not just an extremely BIG one. He was pretty much human. I didn’t ever ‘teach him commands’ as many do with dogs, but I would converse with him in sentences and – he understood. My studio was located in a shed approximately 100m up a hill from this spot where he is standing. I had shown him he was not to wonder off on his own past this gate – and he never – over several years – did. This image I post now is of course altered form the original I scanned. I have cropped it to improve the composition, added some texture layers and some digital painting. In memory of my ‘friend’ Mischa who – as with most large dogs – lived far too short a life. FEATURED IN ‘IMAGES AND IDEAS’!
A portrait of my old Great Dane Phoebe Thanks for looking xot
No one was ever apt to call Dinah Percival an agreeable child – stubborn and persistent, she had an uncanny knack for getting her own way. At age four, she had managed to wheedle a puppy out of her beleaguered parents, but not just any puppy, no! She had heart set on a Great Dane she had seen at the pet store, and absolutely nothing else would do. Never mind that the Percivals inhabited a city flat that could only charitably be called “cozy”, the puppy lumbered home after them. When he installed himself upon an ottoman in the parlor and responded to any and all entreaties, orders and summons from his new owners with elaborate yawns, the Percivals concluded that the only name for the dog was Bartleby. In short order, Bartleby became enormous, as Great Danes do, and like his namesake seemed to prefer to do nothing much at all besides drool great lakes upon the linoleum and roll over languidly in the hope of belly scratches. Dinah loved the big galoot, but by her 7th birthday her attentions had drifted in that most predictable of directions for little girls everywhere: she wanted a pony. For most girls, a passing fancy, but it was sheer folly to think that Dinah would let go of the idea without a fight. Of course, no amount of tantruming could make the Percival residence suitable for equine inhabitance, and when Dinah sighed and supposed she’d settle for two pairs of rollerskates and a camp lantern, the Percivals barely questioned the odd request, so delighted were they with their very first parental triumph. In their giddiness, they barely noticed the dismantled bicycle, the deconstructed table lamp…As to what followed, well I realize it looks bad. It would be all too easy to conclude that the Percivals were raising a budding sociopathic little monster. But before we bring the Humane Society or PETA into things, please consider that Bartleby, for all his torpor, barely seemed to mind. He was amazingly adept on his skates and was so huge that he barely noticed the tiny Dinah perched on his back. Certainly the back propeller, he could have done without, but all told, he seemed to find it somewhat less strenuous than walking. And Dinah had managed to get her pony. Sort of. Kaya the Great Dane lived a full and happy life with us and little sister Luna on the Gold Coast in Australia. As her Mum and as a photographer, I frequently made use of her natural modelling talents and started my own dog photography business, with Kaya as my daily inspiration. In March 2009, Kaya was diagnosed with a form of mouth cancer which had invaded her jaw bone and spread to her nasal passages. Just a few days after diagnosis and only a week after showing the first symptoms, we said goodbye to our beautiful girl forever. She was only two years old. I’ve created this calendar to share with the world my gorgeous girl and to raise awareness about canine Cancer and how suddenly and painfully it can affect the lives of sufferers and loved ones. Please consider purchasing this calendar and doing your bit to support Cancer research in dogs. All profits will be donated to a suitable Australian Canine cancer research foundation, to be advised.
