  • THE SUBJECT: / This striking blue Damselfly is an Austroagrion watsoni (Eastern Dart. / It is sitting on a decaying waterlily leaf and the late afternoon light of an autumn day casts a fine shadow of the insect. THE LOCATION: / Photographed from a small, rickety old wooden jetty over a large pond at a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friend’s property at Kundabung, just south of Kempsey, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Racing Blue’: / The sun was dropping fast and I was exploring this pond before heading back to the house when this dazzling blue damsel alighted on the waterlily leaf. / What really caught my eye was the great colour contrast between the bright turquoise of the insect and the mottled greens, yellows and browns of the leaf as well as that clear shadow. / Fuji S9600: RAW, f/4.9 @ 1/480sec, Manual focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.
