The biggest damselfly in our yard here in Arcadia, Oklahoma
This damselfly is a bluet species and probably Hagens, but it is very difficult to tell without magnification of its tail end. Photographed July 16th, I did some post processing in PS using dry brush to give it a bit of a painterly quality. Featured on RedBubble Home Page – October 6, 2009
Blue Damselflies hanging around on a twig in a pond.
Calopteryx splendens. Devon, UK. The Banded Demoiselle is a European damselfly often found along slow-flowing streams and rivers. The male has translucent wings which each have a broad, dark iridescent blue-black spot (or band) across the outer part. On immature dragonflies the spot is dark brown. The female has translucent, pale green iridescent wings with a white patch near the tip, and a metallic green body. Females can lay up to 10 eggs per minute for 45 minutes. They lay in a wide variety of emergent or floating plants, sometimes even submerging to do so. The eggs hatch after 14 days, the larvae have very long legs, are stick-shaped and develop over two years, usually. They tolerate muddy water and overwinter buried in mud. When they are ready to moult into an adult, they climb up a suitable reed or plant and shed their skin. Males are usually territorial, but large numbers can sometimes be found in lush bankside plants and on floating objects. They court females by opening their wings and performing an aerial dance.
This was the second choice for the Damselfly Challenge. I blew it up to 300% and it looked like a distant planet.. I think this is just for fun.. But if you notice this fellow had not shaved.. I captured this on a live flying subject. Once they find out your not going to eat them they settle down just a tad if you move slow.. So I will share this and some who love colors.. LOL.. Enjoy please.. I do.. / Chuck.. VIEW LARGE PLEASE Which One For Challenge ???

All profits from the sale of this work will be donated to the victims of the Victorian Bush fires. This is a vector illustration of a damselfly on a white Camellia japonica from my original drawing. I have just learnt that the descriptive word in this case japonica must be in lower case after the name of the plant, here “Camellia”. / An interesting piece of plant trivia.

No bigger than a tiny blade of grass, a curious Damselfly lands gently by my side as to say “I am here” and see how beautiful I am.

This blue Damselfly lit right in front of me on our hike in Rocky Mountain National Park Friday and actually sat still long enough for me to take a shot. Our destination was Cub Lake, which is almost covered in Lily Pads, and I have never seen so many Dragonflies and Damselflies anywhere in one place….it was amazing….. This one’s for you, TK!!! :) I thought of you and all your wonderful recent Dragonfly encounters….. :)
