  Hi Liz, Pedder was certainly a tragedy I met this lady after hiking the western arthurs in SW Tassie a few years ago who simply found it too painful to live in the place she loved after Pedder and emigrated to Vic. Twenty-five years later this was her first return trip. Pedder however did start the political conservation machinery that had a direct result in saving the Franklin River. It mobilized a huge group of people who before Pedder idealistically believed that people if informed would do the right thing. These same people took matters further with the Franklin and literally chained themselves to the construction machinery so it could not be used. A similar vibe to the whalers currently in the news – enough is enough. Interestingly, Pedder was actually part of a double dam project the other part being The Gordon Dam, interestingly the anti Pedder dam protestors were practical enough to not fight the Gordon project or the need for dams themselves, just this dam in particular. / http://www.wilderness.org.au/campaigns/wildrivers/franklin/franklin/ / The lynch pin for the Franklin campagn was a photo by Peter Dombrovskis / (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_Dam) which for me has always been somewhat of an ultimate aspiration photographically. When I get up in the morning for instance and it’s raining…....the first thought that comes to mind is ….damn, gotta go to work…......damn…......gotta put on the wet weather gear…....damn…......gotta ride 70 ks with all those maniac car drivers….well not all maniacs but…......damn….......gotta change my sox when I get there….......damn…......gotta do it all again in the afternoon….........damn…............but damn I know it’s good for the dams….........bring it down huey….....we do need it….......damn

  I watched this amazing documentary by Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky last night in Fed Square. It was both inspiring and depressing – what are we doing to this planet? There were whole landscapes without trees or plants of any kind… Some interesting facts from the documentary about the Three Gorges Dam in China: -the dam is 50% again bigger than any other dam on earth / -most of the foreign engineers walked off the job because they thought it was just too big (the reservoir alone is 600km long) / -when they filled the dam in 2006 seismologists recorded a wobble in the earth’s rotation / -it took 15 days to fill / -13 cities and 2 million people were moved to accommodate the dam, often the people themselves taking apart their houses brick by brick (they were paid per brick) / -day labourers working on the dam are being paid 20 yuan per day – that’s AUD$3 dollars / -27 nuclear power plants are planned for the next 10 years and coalburning furnaces are being constructed weekly / -the new cities built to replace the old have not been well-planned, are very high density and have no parks or public spaces… And before you decide to update your computer to the latest model, 90% of recycled computers end up in China. They are broken down by hand (without protective clothing) for parts and the chemicals, especially lead, beryllium, cadmium, mercury and highly toxic phosphor dust that come out of that process are apparent in the air 15kms outside of Taizhou, the main town.   I cant wait, / In a coulple of weeks I am traveling from where I live in Newman to Kunnanura to photograph the Australian Safari with Dirtcomp magazine. http://www.dirtcomp.com.au/ / http://www.australiansafari.com.au/ The Safari travels all the way from Kunnanura to Perth and goes through Newman about half way, so I will have about 7 days on the road and I hopeing to not just shoot motor sport, But to take in the Kimberly’s, Broom as much of the north west as I can, and cut sick with the camera!! for myself too.   Finally got home from my 2200-km round trip to perth to do my tax : ( and to spend up big on photographic stuff!!!!!!! : ) / To put a dampener on it though, I hit a Kangaroo in my 6 month old suzuki van at 110 km/h, its very smashed : ( : ( Now for the goodies, didn’t get a D2xs, ended up getting a fuji S5 pro and I must say I am very happy with the half a dozen pics I have taken with it so far. / I think its going to be the right camera for me, its just not going to cut it for my motor-sport work, so when funds permit i think I will get a D300 for fast stuff. / 2 cameras for the price of a D2xs : ) / got my flash too and have got a epson 2400, paper, inks, 200mm 2.8 and 17-55mm 2.8 nikon lenses!! on the way! Its christmas come early : ) I have no money now, goodbye! : ) PS. I will be selling a heap of my old gear, so I will pop up a list soon, at special rebbubble prices (before I put it all on ebay) if anyone is interested. Mick

Describe your artistic journey. How does it affect your life? Well I am a keen observer with high level of imagination, intuition, and excelled in Art work and drawing in my H.SC. I do my day job as a employment consultant helping unemployed people to find work and mentor & as a life coach; to over come their barrier like no family support, lack of education and training, lack of money, no experience, loneliness, loveless life, addictions – Drinking, Gaming, Drugs, mental health etc. I found it challenging and realised that the people are just struggling badly and need sound & holistic support services and strategies to empower them to stand on their own two feet. Other than that, I do spend my evenings, nights & weekend with non-stop painting and I felt great, over the moon, with sheer joy, no stress at all.. What inspires you to paint? Perhaps the helpless people in the society forced me to paint love art. My Love Art work is to enhance love , life and bring back Romance to energise our life and is being used as “ Love- Art- Therapy ( LAT) ” successfully, which transform the people into a heavenly state having sheer Joy, Happiness, Bubbly nature, a great Hope, Confidence and overcome anxiety, depression, helplessness as people view his art work Sunil sees this world as a small village having mutual dependence among the People, Animals, and Nature; and has identified a set of values.   I’m annoyed about a new dam they’re building in Sudan, which will both destroy the livelihood of lots of nomads and lots of archaeological sites as well. So what it needs is for photographers and other people with clout to go over there and make a big song and dance to try and save at least some of it… but I don’t think it’s going to happen, because nobody seems to much care about Sudan or archaeological stuff anyway. See this post for more of my ranting, which I shouldn’t really put here because it’s not really relevant. But I do think that photoraphers and artists could make a difference if they put their mind to it.
