  • The Sword in the Stone
    by Sarah Moore

    US$4.99–US$133.00

A collaboration with Rosalie Dale (my mum!), Misty Morning was perfect for my Avalon series, I think it works perfectly for the beginning of the story… The sword in the stone – where it all began for the boy who would become King Arthur. Born at Tintagel to King Uther Pendragon and the lady Igraine but sent away to serve as a helper in another castle, the boy who would grow up to become King Arthur was raised unaware of his parents’ status. He was a natural leader, a good fighter, and was always scrupulously fair, yet modest and unassuming. One day, a mysterious magician named Merlin announced that in the woods lay a stone with a sword thrust deep into its center. He promised that whichever man could draw the sword from the stone would be crowned the next king of Britain. Men came from all over the land to try their luck with the sword in the stone. Everyone from the knights to the blacksmiths, from lords to peasant children, tried to extricate the sword. None could. Finally, young Arthur was persuaded to try. Feeling foolish, he approached the stone, shaking his head—for why should he be able to pull out the sword, when the strongest of men had failed? But to his surprise and amazement (and to everyone else’s, certainly), as he grasped the pommel of the sword, he pulled it smoothly from the stone. This young unknown boy was to be the next king! Merlin came forward and congratulated the stunned Arthur, and that is where the story of King Arthur all began—with a sword in a stone. • Another from the pine forest in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Sunday 20 April. With the picturesque shack, lichen covered pine trees, red mushrooms, and then the mist rolling in, I was torn in so many directions – in the end I made an attempt to get all elements in the one shot! / / Margo has kindly provided me with the following info on the red mushrooms – glad I didn’t taste any – I could have flown like Santa’s reindeers!!! / / (1) The Fly Agaric Amanita muscaria is the famous white-spotted red toadstool beloved of children’s book illustrators. They are widely known as one of the few poisonous fungi in the UK, but it is not generally realised that this is because they are in fact strongly psychedelic. Eaten raw, they cause stomach cramps, hallucinations1 and, possibly, death. In some parts of Europe they have long been associated with magic and legend. In Lapland, reindeer regularly get high on them and are seen to leap around, giving rise to the story of Santa’s flying reindeer. Lapps have a custom of deliberately feeding them to their deer, and then collecting and drinking the urine because most of the toxins are filtered out by the reindeer’s digestive system. 1 They are not the same thing as ‘magic mushrooms’. (2) Also, ‘toad-stuhl’ is a German name meaning ‘seat of death’. _ / Landscapes Trees Cards EOD Rusty Flowers Architecture Macro CatchAll DM / /

  • Vintage pink
    by Rosalie Dale IPA

    US$3.71–US$98.80

Photographed in the grounds of the historic house at Fagan Park on the outskirts of Sydney … I am not sure what this tree is called, but it was absolutely laden with these large blooms. I have taken out the background, blended in a textured layer, and outlined and desaturated the flowers to give it an illustrative, vintage look. / Landscapes Trees Cards EOD Rusty Flowers Architecture Macro CatchAll DM / /

  • Unfortunately most plants in this stunning garden are untagged. I have no official name for this striking daisy. Taken in Lilian Fraser Garden, Pennant Hills (Sydney) Australia. Lilian Fraser (the third qualified female biologist in Australia) was born in 1908 at Kurrajong, NSW. The family moved to Pennant Hills after her father Charles purchased the ‘Hopetoun’ poultry farm in Bellamy Street sometime between 1915 and 1920. Over the years, much of the original farm was sold off as residential lots but almost an acre was kept for gardens surrounding the house. The present garden covers 3,426 square metres. Lilian Fraser lived on the property for most of her life. During a career spanning 33 years, Dr Fraser made many significant contributions to world knowledge of citrus diseases. She travelled extensively in Australia and overseas, spending her holidays exploring bushland for new plant and disease specimens. / / Following the death of her mother, Dr Fraser became more involved in the gardens surrounding the house, growing a wide range of plants. As trees and shrubs matured, the garden evolved into the woodland garden it is today. Among the wide range of plants are some very special for their size or rarity. As she approached old age with no immediate family, Dr Fraser offered her garden to Hornsby Shire Council. Her final wish was for her garden be enjoyed as a public garden and park. She died in 1987, aged 79. Landscapes Trees Cards EOD Rusty Flowers Architecture Macro CatchAll DM

    by Rosalie Dale IPA

    US$3.71–US$98.80

Taken at Fagan Park, on the outskirts of Sydney (Australia), mid May 08 on a misty morning. Perhaps because it is usually in shade, I’ve found over the years it is not an easy object to photograph successfully – however I am quite pleased with this one … / Landscapes Trees Cards EOD Rusty Flowers Architecture Macro CatchAll DM / / / / / ! /
