A collaboration with Rosalie Dale (my mum!), Misty Morning was perfect for my Avalon series, I think it works perfectly for the beginning of the story… The sword in the stone – where it all began for the boy who would become King Arthur. Born at Tintagel to King Uther Pendragon and the lady Igraine but sent away to serve as a helper in another castle, the boy who would grow up to become King Arthur was raised unaware of his parents’ status. He was a natural leader, a good fighter, and was always scrupulously fair, yet modest and unassuming. One day, a mysterious magician named Merlin announced that in the woods lay a stone with a sword thrust deep into its center. He promised that whichever man could draw the sword from the stone would be crowned the next king of Britain. Men came from all over the land to try their luck with the sword in the stone. Everyone from the knights to the blacksmiths, from lords to peasant children, tried to extricate the sword. None could. Finally, young Arthur was persuaded to try. Feeling foolish, he approached the stone, shaking his head—for why should he be able to pull out the sword, when the strongest of men had failed? But to his surprise and amazement (and to everyone else’s, certainly), as he grasped the pommel of the sword, he pulled it smoothly from the stone. This young unknown boy was to be the next king! Merlin came forward and congratulated the stunned Arthur, and that is where the story of King Arthur all began—with a sword in a stone. Here’s the basis for my Vintage effect rose just posted … I …
Here’s the basis for my Vintage effect rose just posted … I did go on and add a few frills (see my paragraph at the end) but the whole outcome hangs on this simple process: While this is aimed at PS / CS2 / CS3 users I’m confident you’ll find this doable in Elements also. 1. Make a DUPLICATE LAYER of your image (control J) / 2. In the Image menu, go to Adjustments and across and down to Gradient Map / 3. This should show you pretty little boxes of colour! Click on the one which has darker grey in top LH corner, decreasing to white in lower RH corner. Click OK / 4. Across to the top right of your Layers Pallette, click on the tiny arrow next to Opacity. / 5. Move the slider till the image suits you … maybe halfway? / 6. Go to Image menu / 7. Down to Adjustments and across to Photo Filter. / 8. Choose the Sepia filter, and adjust the sepia density. Click OK. / 9. Back to Image menu / 10. Down to Adjustments and across and down to Brightness/contrast / 11. Fiddle the sliders a tiny bit to get the contrasty look that you’d like. Click OK This is basically it – you’ll need to flatten the image before saving. However there are many more variations you can use once you are comfortable with this process. Try adding a different filter other than Sepia, or some tasteful light with the Render filter. Try doing another duplicate layer with Gaussian blur and erasing the blur at maybe 50% from the main focus of the shot (as I did with my rose) … then of course flatten again before you save. Please point me to your image if you use this – I’ll be interested to see how you go!!!
Gerroa is an idyllic village at the Kiama end of Seven Mile Beach on the south coast of New South Wales … their sunset on Tuesday (6 January 08) was aided by smoke haze from bushfires in the Morton National Forest. After a day in which temperatures reached 40 degrees celsius and beyond, there were plenty of relaxed holiday-makers still enjoying the ambience, the breeze and the spectacular skies. Taken with a Canon 50D, Sigma 10-20 lens at 10mm, F22, ISO100, shutter speed 0.5 to 1/125 seconds, edited in Photomatix tweaked in Photoshop Sorry about the lack of sharpness, this was hand held in a gale force wind!! Conistone, which it is said means ‘farmstead of cows’ or ‘Kings Manor’ is a charming and quiet village hidden away from the main road to the east of Wharfedale. It was mentioned in the Domesday book as Cunestune. Conistone Dib is a narrow gorge, which was created by post-glacial floodwater, and leads upwards from the village green, through Gurling Trough, to an area of spectacular limestone scenery.
A misty morning blended with an image by Marcus Ranum in CS3. The lady’s forlorn demeanor and “all dressed up with nowhere to go” image made me think of Karen Carpenter’s song “Looking for Love…” / Though people say love is everywhere, / I’m looking for love, but it’s just not there For those interested, the background image was processed, the figure placed (which automatically gives a second layer) and blended using the opacity slider, “blend if” options in the blending mode, and erase tool. A shadow was produced with the burn tool, and light controlled on the figure with dodge, burn, and a white brush at about 5%. The blur tool was also used around any hard edges to help the figure blend into the b/g and not appear sharp and ‘dropped in’. Most of these actions were done on separate layers in order to be able to switch them on and off individually and ensure the correct effect was achieved. It also prevents ruining the whole image – if something doesn’t work, just delete that particular layer! At this time of the year the Amanita muscaria (also known as fly agaric) grow in profusion in the pine needles of this forest in the Blue Mountains (NSW, Australia). I believe they have magic qualities if eaten (I can imagine!!) ... there must be some very happy little creatures around as a lot of the mushrooms have holes in them! This time last year, I shot Persistence in the same area. Featured in Retired and Happy Group in May 2009 Landscapes Trees Cards EOD Rusty Flowers Architecture Macro CatchAll DM
