The Janbiyah is part of the Traditional Yemeni Dress. Men used to wear these decorative belts and still do on a daily basis for protection when needed. This piece actually belongs to one of my uncles and is more that 50 years old. / I used the painting with light technique to highlight the beautiful details.

16 inches by 16 inches. / Sharpie marker on white illustration board. The design for this piece was taken directly from a jack of hearts playing card, which, in turn, was from a deck of jumbo index playing cards made by bicycle. And, I am aware that the titular daggers are in fact axes in this drawing, but I wanted to stay as true to the imagery and patterns used on the card as possible, while re-arranging the iconography to suit my needs.

Another photomontage of images I found around the web (links below). I wanted to create an image reminiscent of Baz Lurhmann’s “Romeo & Juliet” movie imagery. This portrait worked well with the religious imagery – I didn’t want anything obvious. This type of imagery is very powerful to me, but not for religious reasons. I just find it perfectly encapsulates the American-Hispanic passion and culture – the juxtaposition of fierce faith and violence (much like Lurhmann’s film actually). / / / /

Not since Master / Blaster have brains and brawn come in such an explosive package! Limited Edition run featuring two characters from the Rock-It-Boy universe. A quick note about the “Hand Drawn” aspect: Even though 99% of my work is hand drawn, it is very rare that I completely “ink” a piece with actual physical ink (in this case a Sharpie and a .7 drawing pen). A different but similar shot to Tears from Sahara Her name is Wulan my college mate from Indonesia. I miss her to bits! She has amazing eyes. First time I saw her, I knew I just had to take a photo of her. And lucky me, I had the chance, we ended up being course mates. This was taken in my very own room-well bathroom to be exact. She slept over at my place. I had this piece of red Thai silk, so I wrapped it around her, dabbed some black eyeliner, and pasted that bindi and starting snapping photos. Probably among my personal favorites to date. Anna Joe
