  • The lone baby cardinal in the nest is growing by leaps and bounds. I’ve named the little mite Teensy and watch everyday as Dad and Mom take such good care of their pride and joy. Unfortunately, Teensy’s sibling is no longer in the nest; I don’t know if predators got it, if it fell out, if it just died from weakness, or what. I don’t want to go and look inside the nest as Teensy is very sensitive and fearful at this stage. Teensy is a little over a week old. This is a very precarious time for Teensy; I’m hoping and praying all will go well with this tiny bird’s life as only about one-third of nestings end successfully.

  • This morning when I looked out the French doors that lead to the patio, Mr. Bluebird was sitting on top of the nesting box and displaying a lovely wing wave; I took that as his salutation, and I in turn send bluebird of happiness greetings to all who view my little friend’s photo.

  • I found this daddy long leg on my bird bath last summer (2008). Daddy Long Legs (not really a spider), but many folks think they are. This name is used very loosely to describe a number of large, small bodied spiders with stilt-like legs. You may encounter these spiders almost anywhere outside, but they like to live under logs, leaves, etc. Daddy Long Legs are non-poisonous and do not produce silk, meaning that they do not make a web. If ever you see a Daddy Long Legs on a spider web, it is because they often fall prey to other spider species. They are also referred to as “Harvestmen”. • I’ve been trying and trying to get a shot of the bluebirds as they enter and exit the nesting box, but it’s not an easy thing to do. I’ve just about given up on the female as she is swifter than my 60-year old reflexes; the male is a little more predictable about direction he heads so I did manage to freeze this wing action though not as crisply as I’d like. I’ll keep trying and would deeply appreciate any tips anyone might have about getting well-focused flight shots of small songbirds. I’ve used the fastest shutter speeds allowable in available light and I’ve also raised the ISO; I’m open to any suggestions. Thank you for viewing my photo.
