Excerpt from: / The Upas Tree / by Aleksandr Pushkin. Deep in the desert’s misery / Far in the fury of the sand, / there stands the awesome Upas Tree / lone watchman of a lifeless land. The wilderness a world of thirst, / in wrath engendered it and filled / its every root, every accursed / grey leafstalk with a sap that killed. Dissolving in the midday sun / the poison oozes through its bark, / and freezing when the day is done / gleams thick and gem-like in the dark….. This is actually nowhere near the desert, it is a pic of a leafless tree in Glen Innes Auckland New Zealand, with a few woody layers and a rotated inverted layer of forest in the background. Dada or Dadaism is a cultural movement that began in neutral Zürich, Switzerland, during World War I and peaked from 1916 to 1920. The movement primarily involved visual arts, literature (poetry, art manifestoes, art theory), theatre, and graphic design, and concentrated its anti war politic through a rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works. Dada activities included public gatherings, demonstrations, and publication of art/literary journals. Passionate coverage of art, politics, and culture filled their publications.
