This is a watercolor painting I still have that I did in college. My Dad would ask if he could come along on one of my hikes and the rock climbing that it required compelled me to say no he could not. Anyway it it planted the seed for the idea in this painting.

TO DAD / OIL ON STRETCHED CANVAS / 12” X 16” ORIGINAL NFS / SIGNED DEDICATED PRINTS AVAILABLE It has been too many years since I last saw my dad, almost a quarter of a century has passed. As I grow older and become more aware of this world and all of it’s potential dangers I reflect upon my father’s exploits. An honest, simple man who just wanted to love his wife, have a home and raise his family. Yet, in spite of his personal wants and desires, he answered the call to travel far, far from his home to help liberate people he had never met. This country boy, from a town so small that it doesn’t even exist anymore, was destined to fly over major cities of the world and to meet people from places he had never known existed. And so he left his new bride and joined the faceless millions in the greatest struggle of the last century. I can only imagine how he must have felt. You see he never spoke of these perilous adventures, he was as quiet as the Sphinx in the desert, the very same desert that he once flew over. When we buried him at the military cemetery the undertaker, quite casually, said to me and my mom “did you know that he had 7 bronze star medals”? We both said “no, we didn’t know. My mom said she knew that he was burned one time and refused to seek a Purple Heart and that he had Malaria”. You see he never spoke of those terrible events that he had lived through for those four dangerous years. He would only talk about those friends he had made and especially those he had lost. To him they were, the heroes, not himself. And so it was for me growing up along side this man, the man I knew as Dad. He worked hard, blue collar, never complained, never missed work and loved his family. The family in which I am proud to say I was a part of. However, there was a box, in our home, that held within it the hidden treasures from his hazardous exploits. I remember it well. This box was not meant to be seen by my eyes, it was secreted and not meant to be viewed, especially by me. There in this forbidden box was strange foreign money, some empty cartridges, all manner of enemy memorabilia, and most importantly many, many, many photographs. These relics, these photos, told the tale of his long ago secret adventures that he would not speak of. I would sneak into that room, that reliquary, and look at these treasures when my parents where not home. I was a young voyeur into the world that my hero, my Dad, had experienced. I can only imagine what it must have been like. A cold blue sky filled with clouds that hid so many deadly dangers. Each flight could be his last. And yet, my hero father would climb aboard his potential coffin for those four agonizing years. So, here is my tribute to my personal hero, my Dad. I know that there are many, many other Dads out there that deserve just as much. My wish is that they too feel the gratitude that they so richly deserve. visionary imagist “Joey”
Sometimes you can tell what a kid is looking at by the expression he wears. When you get that combination of love, happiness and slighty wary humour, it has to be Dad. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——-

Here’s yet another illustration from “Snow Man Is My Friend.” More than any of the others, I think this is the one that scared away publishers. Pretty straight-forward stuff. No trees, now cute snow man, no metaphor, it is what it is. I like it. I think it’s solid, but it certainly isn’t your average picture book illustration.
An old photo but I thought I’d dig it out of the archives for you. This is a young Amur Tiger named Zambar (left) admiring his father (Gamin)’s nice sharp gnashers. The next moment Zambar put his head in Gamin’s mouth, but as typically happens, I ran out of space on my flashcard! :o(

Hi to all my friends on Redbubble, I thought I’d just let you all know that my dad died yesterday morning 23rd Dec 2008. We were expecting him to go soon, but I thought he’d be strong enough to see Christmas through. However, it was not to be. We’re sad and grieving at his death, but pleased that he’s also been spared any more suffering. He’d been coping with Lung Cancer for over 4 years. Praise the Lord, my dad was a Christian! We know where he is going to spend eternity. Thanks to all of you for the encouragement I’ve received since joining. I I really do hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas with your friends and family. Take delight in your loved ones, because you don’t know just how long you’ll have them around to appreciate. Peace and goodwill to all mankind, this Lord’s Day 25 Dec 2008. / Have a great New Year in 2009. Blessings and thanks to you all. Don.

She became a French citizen in 1937. Most noted as a singer, Baker also was a celebrated dancer in her early career. She was given the nicknames the “Bronze Venus” or the “Black Pearl”, as well as the “Créole Goddess” in anglophone nations. In France, she has always been known as “La Baker”. Baker was the first African American female to star in a major motion picture, to integrate an American concert hall, and to become a world-famous entertainer. She is also noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States (she was offered the leadership of the movement by Coretta Scott King in 1968 following Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, but turned it down), for assisting the French Resistance during the Second World War and being the first American-born woman to receive the highest French military honor, the Croix de Guerre, and for being an inspiration to generations of African American female entertainers and others.

My Hero An homage to my hero. This piece probably has no meaning to anyone beyond my family and close family friends. But I wanted to post it. I have been inspired by other artists’ tributes to their respective fathers or grandfathers. Thanks for looking. Back in the olden days if you wanted to get some interesting textures on to a model…. there was no photoshop about then infact it wasn’t even a twinkle in it’s inventors eye…so what you had to do was line up a lovely model and project interesting images over him or her…. like in these strange daze images I’m uploading. The images from this series turned up amongst some of my late fathers photographic archive which I’ve been endeavouring to sort out and digitize. I don’t know who the model is or why or when they were taken but the make up and hair on the model just shreaks ‘eighties’ to me…. so some love from way back when…. with thanks to my very very clever Dad…. enjoy / . /

there is just something so appealing about angels no matter where they turn up…. this is another of my series of slide projection photographs by my late father. They were most likely taken some time in the eighties and have never seen the light of day since. Lucky lucky me to find them hey and give them a little bit of an airing…. and this particular one is one of my favorites … well I have a couple of favs but this one really works for me…. the model and the image have really fused…. / . /
the next in this particular set of images taken a very long time ago by my late father and they involve projecting slides on to a couple of models. this is the stripy look so popular all through the eighties. / . /
