MOSTEIRO DA BATALHA / LEIRIA / PORTUGAL At a distance of 12 km from Leiria, we find Batalha in the banks of the Lena River. / The name and the history of the town are the history of its Monastery of “Santa Maria da Vitória” (St. Mary of the Victory). Three years had passed from August 14th 1385, the date of the Aljubarrota battle, when the Monastery’s construction began in fulfilment of the vow made by King John I to the Virgin Mary. / The king had promised to build a monastery if he was successful in that historical battle. This was a decisive battle for the consolidation of the Portuguese independence and also for the establishment of the Avis dynasty. The Monastery, UNESCO’s World Heritage, was built not on the battlefield, but 3 km away, in the valley of the Lena River, to allow the presence of a monastic community. This magnificent building is the Portuguese final Gothic greatest monument, one of the first to receive “Manuelin” art decoration and one of the most beautiful European churches of the late Middle Ages. / Not far from the entrance of the Monastery stands the Equestrian Monument of Nuno Álvares Pereira – Army Commander of the Kingdom. Dating from 1968, the statue honours the heroic commander that defeated an invading army three times its size, in the Aljubarrota Battle. Apple Blossom Chickadee has been nominated for the prestigous Pay it Forward Group by JackyP. This is what she said about your image / “.this is a particular favourite of mine and always makes me smile :) The image seems to sum up the arrival of spring with the lovely blossom and little chickadee. Renee puts a lot of time and love into her work and the results are just pure bliss!! / -—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / Thank you so very much Jacky! / -—-—-—-—-—-—-——- / Featured in Painted-Digitally – February 25, 2009 / Featured in Cards: Best of your Best – February 2, 2009 This art started out as a photograph of a black-capped chickadee sitting on a barren branch. After a very long winter (so far) I needed something that sang Spring time is just around the corner! After a lot of fuss, and several hours, in Photoshop and Painter X this is the final result. Every pixel of this piece was re-painted (digitally) by hand. All of the apple blossoms and leaves were created from scratch. As a final touch I added some texture to the piece to give it that last little edge I was looking for. I hope this image inspires you to dream of Spring :) / / Lavender Finch / / Fine Art Gallery / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST
It’s Paris, It’s the Louvre, It’s the Glass Pyramid from the Da Vinci Code. It’s also a 10-20mm lens and above all… a pleasure and privilege to have been there again!
Featured in The Birds – Feb. 15, 2009 / I can almost feel it. Spring is JUST around the corner. It’s such an exciting time in Canada after a long and cold winter. The lilac trees bloom putting forth the sweetest scent and the hummingbirds return to our property after a long migration. Yes, Spring will be here before we know it. I can’t wait! I spent countless HOURS last summer, sitting in a lawn chair, ever so patiently waiting to try & capture one of these little darlings in flight. They are only 7-9 cm long. While hovering their wings beat 55x/s, 61x/s when moving backwards, and at least 75x/s when moving forward! / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / Processing info: / This image started out with 3 photograph layers (the lilac background image, a female ruby-throated hummingbird, and the tail from a different photo of the same bird). I took all of the original images with my Canon DSLR. After removing the background around the original bird photos I merged all of the layers in PhotoShop. I digitally painted/blended the entire image in Corel Painter X using the Impasto Depth Smear brush at 30% opacity. I cloned out a distracting branch in the upper left corner and performed blend # 2 work on the main lilac blooms, hummingbird, and the largest leaves using grainy blender 10 brush at 38% opacity. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

Featured in – The Birds, February 7, 2009 I can’t help but dream of summer, and much warmer temperatures, when I look at this image. This piece consists of 6 layers (the background, 5 different layers of pretty lavender blooms, and an adorable little american goldfinch). After merging all of the layers in PhotoShop I digitally painted the entire piece in Corel Painter X. My intent with the goldfinch was to make her look like a baby, that had just left the nest, and was still looking for Mom to bring her some food. / / Fine Art Gallery / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

Featured in Image Writing – December 28, 2008 / —-—-—-—-—-— / In my dreams I am walking along the forest trail. I have a white cotton dress on, my hair is tied back with a ribbon, and my bare feet feel cool as they caress the dew on the grass beneath me. I am a child again – young, free, innocent…trusting. Wild daisies frame the wooded trail. Their soft white petals sparkle as the rays from the rising sun kiss the dew on their tips. The flowers giggle as the butterflies and honey bees flutter about their centers. Just like Cinderella, my favorite fairy tale, the bluebirds and chickadees are following me along the trail. Playfully, they tug at the ribbon in my hair and sing their beautiful melodies as they gracefully fly about. The squirrels and chipmunks are busy gathering acorns and the wonderful scent of fallen leaves fills the autumn air. I hear a rustling in the woods. The berry vines along the trail are swaying side to side, giving way to something approaching our cheerful morning parade. I wonder what it could be? Slowly, quietly, two young fawns emurge and shyly ask if they can join us on the trail. I’ve never seen anything so sweet, so majestic, so pure. Their backs are dappled white and their eyes are big, dark and beautiful. The morning sun kisses their cheeks with warmth and sparkles off their eyes like stars. They look like little angels. Yes, I believe they are. In my dreams nature is full of angels. They come in all shapes and sizes – reminding us of the beauty that surrounds us each and every day. Take the time to stop, look, and listen….you just may hear their whispers and be blessed with something magical. / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / My story is inspired by this image and my image by the story. Although we really do have twin fawns around our property (and this is one of them), this is actually a composite of the same fawn I was fortunate enough to capture pictures of – as I walked along the trail in the early morning light :o) / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

This sweet flower girl portrait started with an image of my daughter and took several hours to complete. Several layers of florals and vines, in various transparencies, embossing effects and textures were added. I also did air brushing, oil brush work, and drew in all of the hair by hand. This work of art was completed using Corel Painter X and Photoshop. / Crop (right eye detail): / / Crop (left eye & floral detail): / / Fine Art Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST
Where do I begin with this piece? I have a lovely sweet pea vine that comes up along the back of my house every summer. The blooms are so pretty and the raindrops so exquisite on the pink petals and tendrils. It’s my favorite spot to obtain raindrop macros. After several photo shoots with this vine over the summer I tried to get a little more creative and put more of ‘myself’ into the image – literally! On the very top of the stem where you see a fine loop covered in waterdrops – that is actually a piece of my hair. Yes, I subjected myself to a moment of pain for this (smiles). / / Other than minor tone adjustments, and a slight saturation tweak, on the sweet pea stem itself – that part of the original image was left alone. I did so much to the background I wouldn’t even know where to begin. I don’t think there was a filter or distort tool I didn’t try until I finally achieved the look I wanted! I envisioned a pastel background with a marble look and am quite pleased with how it turned out. Raindrop Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST /

As a once psychology major, I was intrigued by Freud’s theory on the id and ego of the human psyche. It has been many years since those classes so my words may be somewhat off. But this piece is a self representation (aren’t they all?) of myself and how the “id” and “ego” play in our life decisions. We all seek pleasure and that constant feeling of euphoria, and our “id”’s only goal is to achieve those feelings without worry or care about the consequences of such actions. It is our “ego” that keeps the “id” in line, allowing us to think before we act, and to be able to foresee what may come of this pleasure seeking. It is a constant battle that wages on beneath our skin and sometimes the “id” overcomes. Some choose to live only by the “id”s bidding and never realize the destruction they leave behind when seeking their pleasures. I have been through that lifestyle once, and as much as I enjoyed such pleasures in bountiful amounts….the aftershock of those actions can still be felt today.
When I visit my Mom in Pembroke we love to visit Pansy Patch Park. It is surrounded by a forest and is such a beautiful and inspirational place, especially in the fall when all the leaves are changing colors. The original image has been modified into a work of art – bringing out, I hope, what my spirit sees, not necessarily everything the lens does. Shot at Makara Beach, west coast of lower North Island, New Zealand, I’d given up on this location and was walking back to the car, I’d been shooting past the point towards sunset, light conditions were harsh, not much water movement and no clouds, not my cup of tea at all. Looking back towards the point I noticed a series of stones that led towards the point, this was too good to be true, so here it is, made the journey worth while.
