Osprey II

This Image was captured near my house in Jupiter, Florida The Osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats. It is found on all continents except Antarctica , the Osprey’s diet is 99% fish so it usually nests in a location near a body of water providing there is an adequate food supply. The Osprey is particularly well adapted to this diet, it is the only raptor with reversible outer toes (allowing it to grasp its prey with two toes in front and two behind), closable nostrils to keep out water during dives, and backwards-facing scales on the talons which act as barbs to help hold its catch. Two Ibis having a bath. / The American White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) is a species of wading bird of the ibis family Threskiornithidae which occurs from the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States south through most of the New World tropics. They are usually seen in marshy wetlands and pools near the coast. They are often seen on mowed grass, lawns, and have become common in some city parks, where it can be found feeding alone or with other Ibis. It builds a stick nest in trees, bushes, or over water, and 2 to 5 eggs are typically laid. White ibises are monogamous and colonial, usually nesting in mixed colonies with other wading species. The ibis feeds by probing with its long, downcurved beak. Its diet consists of various fish, frogs and other water creatures, as well as insects and small reptiles. Adults are 26 inches(65 cm) long with a 37 inch(95 cm) wingspan. They have all-white plumage except for black wingtips (visible in flight) and reddish bills and legs. The red bill blends into the face of breeding birds; non-breeding birds show a pink to red face. The juveniles are largely brown with duller bare parts; they are distinguished from the Glossy and White-faced Ibises by white underparts and rumps. Over all both sexes look alike. Like the other species of ibis, the White Ibis flies with neck and legs outstretched, often in long, loose lines. The song of the male is an advertising hunk-hunk-hunk-hunk. The female squeals. This is an Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio),He is a Florida Resident currently he lives at The Bush Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, Florida The Eastern Screech-owl (Megascops asio) is one of the smallest species of owls in North America. They are 6-10 inches (16-25 cm) Tall with a Wingspan of 19-24 inches (48-61 cm) and Weigh 4.27-8.61 ounces (121-244 g) Screech-owls are generally colored in various brownish hues with usually a whitish, patterned underside, which helps to camouflage them against the bark of trees. They prefer to hang out in old trees with hollows; these are home to their prey which includes insects, reptiles, small mammals such as bats and mice and other small birds. Screech-owls have a good sense of hearing which helps them locate their prey in any habitat. They also possess well-developed raptorial claws and a curved bill. They usually carry their food back to their nests, to guard against the chance of losing their meal to a larger animals. An adult is 44 cm/17.3 inches long with a 112 cm/44.1 inch wingspan. It has a pale face with dark rings around the eyes, a yellow beak and brown eyes. It is the only typical owl of the eastern United States which has brown eyes; all others have yellow eyes. The head is round and lacks ear tufts, a distinction from the Short-eared Owl. The upper parts are mottled gray-brown. The underparts are light with markings; the chest is barred horizontally while the belly is streaked lengthwise. The legs and feet are covered in feathers up to the talons. The usual call is a series of eight accented hoots ending in oo-aw, with a downward pitch at the end. The most common mnemonic device for remembering the call is “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all.” It is noisy in most seasons. When agitated, this species will make a buzzy, rasping hiss. While calls are most common at night, the birds do call during the day as well. A computer manipulated image. Using a fractalius filter / This is Lema he is a Severe Macaw (Ara severa). He has made it away from his perch to enjoy some (Florida) Native seeds. He is one of the largest of the mini-macaws. A Severe Macaw can reach a size of around 45 cm (18 in) of which around half is the length of the tail. This is the only mini-macaw to have feathers on the bare patches on its face which makes it look like the larger types of macaw. They are found in both the Western Hemisphere and in the Eastern Hemisphere. / Flamingos filter-feed on brine shrimp. Their oddly-shaped beaks are specially adapted to separate mud and silt from the food they eat, and are uniquely used upside-down. Magnolia

This image was captured in Jupiter, Florida then computer manipulated to get this effect a fractalius filter was used along with many other image techniques. Magnolia grandiflora, commonly known as the Southern magnolia or bull bay, is a magnolia native to the southeastern United States, from coastal Virginia south to central Florida, and west to East Texas. It is a medium to large tree 20-30 m (66-100 feet) tall with a striking appearance, both in leaf and in bloom. Having evolved before bees appeared, the flowers developed to encourage pollination by beetles. As a result, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are tough, to avoid damage by eating and crawling beetles. The large, showy, citronella-scented flowers are white, up to 30 cm (12 inches) across and fragrant, with 6-12 petals with a waxy texture, emerging from the tips of twigs on mature trees in late spring. The southern magnolia is the state tree of Mississippi, and the state flower of Mississippi and Louisiana. This image was captured in Jupiter, Florida / This is an Eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) it is a pitviper species found in the southeastern United States. It is also the heaviest and largest of venomous snake in the Americas and the largest rattlesnake. Specimens over 7 feet (213 cm) are rare, but well documented. The color pattern consists of a brownish, brownish yellow, brownish gray or olive ground color, overlaid with a series of 24-35 dark brown to black diamonds with slightly lighter centres. Each of these diamond-shaped blotches is outlined with a row of cream or yellowish scales. In proportion to its length, it has the longest fangs of any rattlesnake species. These snakes forage actively or lie in ambush for small mammals, especially rabbits and rice rats. Their diet also includes birds. Prey is struck and released, after which they follow the scent trail left by the dying prey. If you are tired of rummaging through countless pages trying to feature a group member or an image that won a challenge and have so many more pages to go and your mouse hand is cramped. Try this method. NOTE: This only works for groups that you Host / Co-Host / Also be careful in doing this as it will have the reverse effect on a featured image. / It will remove it from the featured section if it is already featured. / Be sure to visit the groups “overview” page to make sure your handy work has included all the images you wanted to feature. To feature Challenge Images / 1.On your groups “overview” page there is a link to your “featured work” section right click the link and select (with Firefox)”copy link location” (with internet explorer “copy shortcut”) / Now you are ready to feature some images the easy way / 2.Go to the challenge page that shows the awesome challenge winners that are about to be featured and while holding the control (CTRL) key left click the lucky images doing this will open them in new tabs in your web browser / 3.Now the fun part Clicking one of the new tabs that were opened will take you to the image page drop a comment if you like while you are there. The Southern Caracara (Caracara plancus), also known as the Southern Crested Caracara, is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. It has a total length of 50-65 cm (20-26 in) and a wing-span of 120 cm (47 in). Individuals from the colder southern part of its range average larger than those from tropical regions. / A bold, opportunistic raptor, often seen walking around on the ground looking for food. Mainly feeds on carcasses of dead animals, but will steal food from other raptors, raid bird nests, and take live prey if the possibility arrives (mostly insects or other small prey, but at least up to the size of a Snowy Egret). It is typically solitary, but several individuals may gather at a large food-source (e.g. dumps). Baby Ibis

The American White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) is a species of wading bird of the ibis family Threskiornithidae which occurs from the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States south through most of the New World tropics. They are usually seen in marshy wetlands and pools near the coast. They are often seen on mowed grass, lawns, and have become common in some city parks, where it can be found feeding alone or with other Ibis. It builds a stick nest in trees, bushes, or over water, and 2 to 5 eggs are typically laid. White ibises are monogamous and colonial, usually nesting in mixed colonies with other wading species. The ibis feeds by probing with its long, downcurved beak. Its diet consists of various fish, frogs and other water creatures, as well as insects and small reptiles.Adults are 26 inches(65 cm) long with a 37 inch(95 cm) wingspan. They have all-white plumage except for black wingtips (visible in flight) and reddish bills and legs. The red bill blends into the face of breeding birds; non-breeding birds show a pink to red face. Juveniles like this one are largely brown with duller bare parts; they are distinguished from the Glossy and White-faced Ibises by white underparts and rumps. Over all both sexes look alike. Like the other species of ibis, the White Ibis flies with neck and legs outstretched, often in long, loose lines. The song of the male is an advertising hunk-hunk-hunk-hunk. The female squeals. Canebrake Rattlesnake

Common names: timber rattlesnake, canebrake rattlesnake, banded rattlesnake. The Crotalus horridus is a species of venomous pitviper found in the eastern United States. This is the only rattlesnake species in most of the populous northeastern United States Potentially, this is one of North America’s most dangerous snakes, due to its long fangs, impressive size and high venom yield. Before striking, they often do a good deal of preliminary rattling and feinting. Canebrake rattlesnakes, are large, heavy bodied snakes with the characteristic rattles on the end of the tail. Adults range from 30-60 in (76-152 cm) with the record being more than 6 feet (183 cm) long. Canebrakes are usually gray and may even have a pink hue and a pinkish, yellow, orange, or brown stripe running the length of the back. Timber rattlers are typically more brown or yellowish and may even be black. Both forms have solid black tails that appear almost velvet and black chevrons on the back and sides with the point of the (V) pointing forward. The babies are miniatures of the adults but are usually a lighter gray and have only a single button (rattle) on the tip of the tail at birth. Males get larger than females. They have a wide distribution in the eastern United States but the species is absent from most of Florida. This snake occurs in a wide variety of terrestrial habitat including lowland cane thickets, high areas around swamps and river floodplains, hardwood and pine forests, mountainous areas, and rural habitats in farming areas. They typically become reduced in numbers in highly urbanized or areas of housing development. They become active above ground by late spring and can be seen periodically until the onset of cold weather in late fall. Canebrakes are active during both day and night but spend the majority of their time coiled in ambush positions ready to capture prey. Their prey is mainly small mammals, but may include small birds, frogs, or other snakes. Although capable of consuming other rattlesnakes, the most common snakes they eat are garter snakes. These rattlesnakes hibernate during cold weather. Timber rattlers congregate in dens in mountainous areas whereas canebrakes often overwinter alone in stump holes or beneath ground cover. They eat mostly small rodents when young, and large individuals kill and eat squirrels and rabbits. Females usually do not reach maturity until at least 5 years old and typically wait at least 2 or 3 years between litters. The live young are born in late summer or early fall around the time that courtship and mating occurs. Large male canebrake rattlesnakes are often seen in late summer or early fall in search of mates. Although reaching large sizes, most individuals are docile when encountered in the wild and often will remain coiled or stretched out without moving. If threatened, however, they will not hesitate to deliver a serious bite. Here is a wasp lifting off a flower bud in my backyard . The term wasp is typically defined as any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is neither a bee nor ant. Almost every pest insect species has at least one wasp species that preys upon it or parasitizes it, making wasps critically important in natural control of their numbers, or natural biocontrol. Wood Duck

The Wood Duck or Carolina Duck (Aix sponsa) is a medium-sized perching duck. A typical adult is about 48 cm (19 in) in length with an average wingspan of 73 cm (29 in). The adult male has distinctive multi-colored iridescent plumage and red eyes. The female, less colorful, has a white eye-ring and a whitish throat. Both adults have crested heads. When swimming, wood ducks bob their head back and forth in a jerking motion, which makes them easy to spot. They usually nest in cavities in trees close to water, although they will take advantage of nesting boxes in wetland locations if available. The wood duck tends to fly for prolonged periods of time after reproducing. Their personality is shy and skittish. The birds are year-round residents in East Texas and other southern parts of their range, but the northern populations migrate south for the winter. They overwinter in the southern United States near the Atlantic coast. These birds feed by dabbling or walking on land. They mainly eat berries and seeds, but also insects, making them omnivores. / The population of the wood duck has increased a great deal in the last several years. The increase has been due to the work of many people constructing wood duck boxes and conserving vital habitat for the wood ducks to breed. Jupiter Lighthouse II

The lighthouse commenced operation on July 10, 1860 it is made of brick, it was painted red in 1910 due to discoloration caused by humidity. It is 108 feet tall and has a circular stairway with 105 steps from the base of the tower to the lantern room The light itself is a first-order Fresnel lens manufactured in Paris by Henry-LePaute. The rotating lens flashes (burst of light when bulls-eye passes viewer’s line of vision) is 1.2 seconds, eclipses (darkens) 6.6 seconds, flashes 1.2 seconds, eclipses 21 seconds, and then repeats the cycle. The light can be viewed approximately 20 miles out at sea. / During the restoration work in 1999-2000, archaeologists uncovered shells and pottery fragments in excavations made on the hill near the base of the tower. The artifacts are believed to be remnants of a Native American colony, dating from around 700 AD.
