Squirrel sneaking a drink from the murky swamp waters hanging upside down from a Bald Cypress tree on Bayou Desiard – Ouachita Parish Louisiana. This is one of my favorite shots and honestly one of my first paddling trips to Bayou DeSiard after returning to Louisiana. I had been away for about 15 years. This scene was less than 50 yards from the Public Boat Launch at Frenchman’s Bend. I have seen this behavior displayed many times since this shot, but oddly never noticed it before the day this image was captured. This Great Blue Heron lit atop a cypress tree and was silhouetted beautifully against the rosy sky at sunset on Lake Martin in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana.

I posted this image earlier and then got a request from one of my former students to create another version of the same picture, this one as a Cajun Christmas card. In her email to me, she wrote, “Yesterday, I found out I relapsed… A tumor that was dormant for two years awoke from its slumber… so back to the battle… and you know this Cajun is going to fight like a true Cajun!” I’m dedicating this card to Robyn and to her fighting spirit. I hope that everyone who views this card and reads this entry will pray for her to win this next round of her battle with cancer. Robyn is a gifted athlete who abounds with humor and the Cajun joie de vivre, joy of life! Please spread the word; united prayer is powerful. And a very Merry Cajun Christmas to you and yours!

Dinner got delayed once again… I couldn’t resist the colors outside my window. Captured with Nikon D50
It was a quiet Christmas for my husband and me, the first one we’ve spent alone in our 35 years of marriage and 58 years of life. We spent the last daylight hours of our Savior’s birthday at Lake Martin, in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, and this is the scene we viewed. I’ve named it Silent Night in the Deep South, a quiet ending to a quiet and peace-filled day.
Bald Cypress trees at First Landing State Park. Used 7 bracketed images then merged through Photomatix to create this HDR image.
A lone cypress, its branches hanging with moss, stands against a golden sky in a Louisiana swamp.
Lake Martin is one of my favorite places; every sunset is unique and different but always tranquil and peaceful. On this particular evening, the sky was aflame with light and the dark cypress trees stood in stark contrast to the brilliant colors of the sunset.

View of Lago di Garda (Lake Garda) from the castle of Malcesine. A silhouette of the castle walls -as well as that of cypresses, so typical for Mediterranean!- is visible in the foreground. Taken on Scenic Drive. Carmel, California. November, 2007. There’s an interesting story behind this photograph, and #244, “Scenic & 8th. I was in a local camera store in Carmel, the manager of the store was telling me my camera was a toy because it wasn’t a high priced SLR, like he seels in the store. Obviously this annoyed me because i knew what my camera was capable of doing. So I left the store, walked down toward the beach, saw these Cypress trees, and took these shots in about five minutes. / I then walked back up to the camera store, and showed them to the manager, and the staff. They were impressed with the quality of the images. / I love my camera! I’m using the Panasonic Lumix FZ-50 That is what I used to take almost all the photographs in my portfolio. I’m satisfied with the performance of that camera. The images speak for themselves.
