Hey, it’s 0630, it’s cold, it’s very foggy out so what do you do? You pull up the doona and stay in bed go out and take pictures of course! 3-frame HDR, tone mapped in Photomatix and converted in CS4
Self portrait at speed. Taken on a home made cardboard wide angle pinhole camera mounted over the front wheel. Shot on 5×4 format Fuji Velvia 50 iso sheet film – 26 second exposure. This was used as the cover image of Velovision (an English cycling magazine) issue 8 about four years ago.
The area here around Hilversum really is a cyclist´s paradise. So I do 98 per cent of my trips by bike. in the course of time you will see quite a number of paths. This one actually is not an official cycling path, but rather a small road, but its special atmosphere tempted me to share it with you today already, knowing that quite a few of you like my misty shots. For those who might think we have mist here in the Netherlands all the time, let me tell you that we only have it on a few days, as there is far too much wind for mist on most days. But I have made mist photography my special hobby in the past years and must say that I enjoy it tremendously. So I try to go out whenever there is such a day. To be able to share some of this joy with you is a great boost for my photographic work! Actually this is again a typical Sunday morning shot. While fewer and fewer people go to Church here at that time, more and more go out into nature, walking, cycling, horse-riding, boating … So if you want a really quiet nature world in this over-crowded country on a Sunday, be home on Sunday morning at 9 am at the latest. When these guys chased along me, it was already two hours beyond that safety date! Near Maartensdijk, 23rd December 2007, 11.03 am / Nikon D80, Nikkor 18 – 200 mm at 200 mm / F 8, 1/250, ISO 200
Car fumes in a narrow street in Florence, Italy
Another shot for my series on “Dutch cyclists”, this time showing a man cycling home on the southern jetty at the harbour of Scheveningen while in the quite dramatic light of a December afternoon you can see cranes and a powerstation at Rotterdam harbour in the distance. Oh, not to forget the gull! She just came in time! Scheveningen, 3rd December 2007, 3.49 pm / Nikon D80, Nikkor 18-200 mm at 200 mm / F 11, 1/160, ISO 200 Featured in “Bicycle”.
The cyclist on this picture was standing a long time on the southern jetty of the harbour at Scheveningen, watching the sun sinking into the North Sea. There had been a dark cloud bank coming up which seemed to end all possibilities of a beautiful sunset, but then the sky opened up again and allowed to see the spectacle of the last minutes of the sinking of the sun in a particularly impressive fashion. Scheveningen, 24th February 2009, 6.07 pm / Nikon D80, Nikkor 18-200 mm at 200 mm / F 14, 1/100, ISO 200 Soon after the sun had gone done, and it was time to go home:
It’s clear and simple…BIKE! Wear it proud.

Another cyclist shot, this time taken yesterday on a very cold December morning. To my shame I must admit that this cyclist was much braver than I was yesterday, as this time I took the car to get to this lane near Hilversum. Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You Or as a rough translation either: I wasn’t paying attention properly, or, I saw you but didn’t care…

I love this photo for so many reasons. Here I was…a Buenos Aires tourist in the area of Palermo. I saw this elderly couple across the street and wanted to take their pic. Then…suddenly, a Buenos Aires bicyclist pops into my frame as I’m looking into the lens. He was delivering something and seemed to have passed the adress…so he stopped and started to back up. As he turned his head my way I spontaneously shot this one…and I love how it was so random and spontaneous. The wonders of photography when you’re at the right spot at the right time.
This was taken in the Devonshire Street Tunnel (Sydney)
Another shot of a cyclist on the Horneboeg Heath at Hilversum. I took this shot from the same position as the former one, but this time the cloud sky was very dark and threatening, quite different from the lightful sunrise scene which you know already.
