I recently decided to buy another camera. At first I thought to go the digital SLR route and looked at some nice (but expensive!) ones. Then I came to realize that I do not want a large heavy camera with huge lenses and a whole bag full of acessories. For that, I already have a very nice “pretend” DLSR in the form of a Kodak P880 with its beautiful wide-angle lens. But when you’re literally crawling through the bush, doing contortionist tricks to get under branches without getting stuck on thorns, and when your subject is for the most part tiny, tiny fungi … then a big camera swinging around your neck is no fun. So I re-thought my thought, and realized that I take most of my macro shots with my old (circa 2004) Sony Cybershot T1. A lovely little camera, as big as a credit card, that can focus 1cm from the lens! So I had a look at Sony’s current offering, and finally bought the Sony Cybershot T200 last week. And it’s wonderful! Quite affordable for my pocket (semi-unemployed as I am) at R4000. It has all the features that I love about the T1. Extreme close focus. Fast to take a photo and save it. (The Kodak is soooo slooooow.) A nice bright lcd screen .. a touch screen now. I love gadgets, having a camera with a touch screen is cool. Multiple focus areas. And the ability to touch the screen where you want it to focus. Very useful in those extreme close-ups. Steady-shot seems to help with my shaking hands. Recent photos taken with it includes and I “sold” the T1 to my mom, perhaps we’ll see some of her shots grace RB in the future.
