A WHITETAIL BUCK IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
ANOTHER GLIMPSE OF THE WILDLIFE IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
EVERY MARCH THE GREAT BLUE HERONS IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK START BUILDING OR REBUILDING THIER NESTS. / THERE ARE TWO HERON ROOKERIES WITHIN THE PARK CONFINES. THIS IS THE LARGER ONE, COMPRISED OF OVER FIFTY NESTS, MOST WITHIN ONE HUNDRED YARDS OF BATH ROAD. THE PARK SERVICE HAS INSTALLED A SMALL PARKING AREA ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE GATHER TO WATCH THE BIRDS EVERY SPRING THAT TRAFFIC COULDN’T GET THROUGH
I’M VERY OFTEN SURPRISED TO SEE HOW A RAINY OVERCAST DAY CAN SOMETIMES BRING OUT MORE COLOR THAN SUNSHINE. THIS WAS TAKEN ON SUCH A DAY IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY.

THESE TWO GEESE WERE HANGING AROUND IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY FOR ABOUT 8 OR 9 MONTHS. I’D NEVER SEEN ANY OTHERS LIKE THEM. / I RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT THEY’RE WHITE CHINESE GEESE AND I THINK THAT THAT’S WHY THEY LEFT…THEY COULDN’T UNDERSTAND A WORD THE CANADA GEESE WERE SAYING !! CAMERA: CANON AE-1 PROGRAM / LENS: SIGMA 70-210 MM @ 210 MM / FILM: FUJICOLOR PRO 400 ASA
BECAUSE I’M PARTIALLY RED-GREEN COLOR BLIND, IT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO GET A PICTURE OF A CARDINAL DURING THE SUMMER; I CAN’T SEE A RED BIRD IN A GREEN TREE ! / WINTER DOES HAVE ITS ADVANTAGES. TAKEN IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
WAY, WAY, WAY BACK WHEN I WAS YOUNG WE DIDN’T SEE MANY DEER IN NORTHEAST OHIO…( HEY, I HEARD THAT DINOSAURS CRACK…THAT’S NOT FUNNY !! ) NOW THE POPULATION HAS GROWN, ESPECIALLY IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, TO A POINT WHERE THEY HAVE VERY NEARLY REACHED NUISCANCE STATUS. THEY SURE DON’T POSE A PROBLEM FOR ME…THIER GRACE AND DELICACY GIVES ME PLEASURE EVERY TIME I SEE ONE.
AFTER SPENDING THE BEST PART OF A WINTER’S DAY IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY, I DECIDED TO HEAD FOR HOME. IN FRONT OF THE BRANDYWINE SKI AREA THIS GUY WAS JUST SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. CARS WERE PULLING UP TO HIM AND HONKING THIER HORNS AND HE WOULD JUST ACT LIKE THEY WEREN’T EVEN THERE. / I REALLY LIKE THESE BIRDS AND I WAS AFRAID HE’D GET HIT SO I PULLED OVER AND GOT OUT OF MY VAN TO SEE IF I COULD SCARE HIM INTO MOVING, BUT HE IGNORED ME TOO. ( THAT WAS AFTER GETTING THE PICTURE, OF COURSE ! ). / AS I GOT OUT OF THE VAN I HEARD SEVERAL CROWS CALLING NEAR BY. THEY MUST HAVE ATTACKED THE HAWK AND BEATEN HIM UP PRETTY BADLY. HE HAD THAT SAME DAZED LOOK YOU’LL SOMETIMES SEE ON A BOXER’S FACE AFTER A BAD ROUND. / I NUDGED HIM A COUPLE TIMES WITH MY LEG AND HE STILL DIDN’T MOVE, SO I STARTED TO BEND OVER TO PICK HIM UP AND TAKE HIM TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD; HE WASN’T INTERESTED IN THAT, SO HE TOOK OFF. I’M GLAD IT WORKED OUT THAT WAY. THIER BEAKS AND TALONS CAN EXERT BONE-BREAKING PRESSURE AND, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, I’VE GOTTEN USED TO MY FINGERS BEING RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE, AT THE ENDS OF MY HANDS, AS OPPOSED TO SCATTERED ALL OVER THE VALLEY.

A HIKING TRAIL IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
I had set my tripod up and was waiting for a large female red-tailed hawk to fly to one of her favorite trees one morning in late september. After about an hour I took a second away from looking at the tree and to stretch, looked around and saw this guy about 70 yards off to my right I had to move my camera slowly enough to not scare him off but fast enough to get the shot. / I got lucky and here he is. I later showed this image to a couple of the rangers in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, ( This was actually taken less than a quarter of a mile from the Park Headquarters ) and they both agrred that was about the biggest buck they had seen in the valley in quite some time. / Just as a point of reference, at full extension my tripod is close to 6’ tall; when the camera is mounted, the lens is very close to 6’ off the ground and you can get an idea of his size by the shooting angle.
STILL YOUNG ENOUGH TO HAVE SPOTS, BUT OLD ENOUGH TO BE ON ITS OWN AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THAT STRANGE CREATURE THAT MAKES THE CLICKING SOUNDS IS. TAKEN IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

A friend had just gotten a new Tamron 500MM f-8 mirrored lens and hadn’t gotten a chance to go out and try it yet. He asked me if I’d go out and test it. before the echo had died down i was out the door on my way to one of my favorite places in the Cuyahoga Valley, and this guy was the first thing I saw. / Yeah, I liked that lens….A lot !
