  • There’s a “Cutest,Funniest, Most Dapper Hat Challenge!” in the Babyfaces Of Redbubble Members group. / Problem is that, when my mother, in 1943. Yes. During World War II, so very proudly walked through the streets on Gouda, with me in the pram, passers-by sympathised with her, for having a baby with water on the brain! / It made her furious and very upset. She loved children. Was so pleased that I’d survived birth, just! After doctors had said I would not live. / My head is simply too big! / / It was hard to find any pictures for this challenge. / There was little to eat, in Holland, just after I was born (1943). There was the hunger winter and my parents survived on boiling potato peelings as dinner. Or often no evening meal, at all. / My mother was very likely the most energetic and smallest of the nine Postma children. / Could not sit still and do nothing. Knitted a lot!!! So that’s what I’m wearing. No doubt, made of wool which had come from some older garment. / / Later, in about 1954/55, I did wear a hat in the operetta, De Wonderbloem (The magic flower.), written and produced by my role-model and hero, Mr Berrety. (My teacher, from 3rd to 6th grade.) / And, after that I wore a cap on top of my head, which my parents brought back from Spa, in Belgium, after their bus-trip with the rest of the fellow factory workers from the mirror factory, where my father was foreman. / Actually crossing the border into Belgium, had been a big adventure for my parents. / Annual holidays were normally taken, on bikes, to the eastern parts of the Netherlands. / / Their next trip, out of the Netherlands, was half-way around the globe, migrating to Australia and the first stop was in Port Said, where they bought a souvenir hat, for my, to protect me against the sun. / / During my last 11 years of teaching primary, it became more and more important that pupils should be aware of the need to wear hats. / It was made compulsory, as part of the school uniform, in the playground. / So dozens and dozens of times, during those 11 years I was challenged by the students: / Why did they have to wear a hat and I didn’t. / Dozens and dozens of times, I explained that I have a big head!!
