Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.” The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles including as messenger, draught and guard dogs. Currently they are often used as search and rescue, assistance, guide dogs for the blind, guard and police dogs in addition to their traditional roles. Although an extremely versatile breed used in recent times for many other purposes, the Rottweiler is first and foremost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of herding breeds. A multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog of exceptional ability, it is capable of working all kinds of livestock under a wide variety of conditions. The breed is an ancient one, whose history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman droving dog, local dogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil.

My tired little baby! Little, Loved LeeLa!! / This is LeeLa when she was only about a month or two old. She is now (just turned on 5 Feb 09) 2 years old. I ran across this shot and just had to share it. :) She is laying in her “diaper bag” that we still carry for her. We like to keep bags, toys, food and treats on hand when we take her somewhere. lol / She is the baby for sure. She is our Grand-Puppy. LeeLa’s mom is our daughter and she was first spoiled rotten by Megan and now that they are living with us she is being spoiled by Grampy. She is grampy’s girl all the way. She will pass up time with her mom to stay with grampy…lol Sometimes that irritates her mom a bit, but at least she is being cared for and loved when mom has to go to work. :) LeeLa and Princess get along well, but Princess isn’t too happy that she has over taken her daddy. So Princess has now become MY dog. lol hehe / At the time I took this image, I had only been taking photos for about 2 years. I am uploading this specifically for a challenge. Hope it is liked. / This IS LeeLa’s ball…just try and take it and she’ll let you know. We have about 5 of these in her toy box, but they are ALL her’s…well, at least until Princess get’s her teeth into one or two or all of them (photo to follow). :) / / This image has been selectively colored. I’m sure there are many different ways people do this, but the way I do it is in Photoshop. I open my image, then using the loop tool, I do a very loose loop around the part that will be “yellow”, after that has been selected, go to the Layers drop down menu and select New and then Layer Via Copy. This should show you a new layer of just the “yellow” part of the image in your layers window (if not, you did something wrong..go back and try again…lol). Now click on the original layer of the whole image. Go to the drop down menus, click on Image, then Adjustments, then Desaturate. The whole image should have changed to be desaturated (except the yellow part). (Make any changes to the tones now that you wish the desaturation to look like). Now click on the other layer with just the “yellow”. Click on the Eraser tool, pull the image WAY in and using a small eraser, erase around the “YELLOW” part of the image to bring the desaturated part thru, leaving just the yellow part of the image. When erasing, use a slight feathered tool so that you can get really close, but don’t make it look like it has been cut and pasted. / After that is complete, pull the image out a bit and recheck it closely. If you are sure you are done with all the erasing, you can now merge your documents and flatten them. Go to the drop down menu Layers, go all the way down to the bottom and click Flatten Image. I hope this has helped someone learn how to make a selectively colored image. Or at least taught someone a different way to do it. :) / / / / / /

He was born on the anniversary of our Rottweiler’s passing (Clyde): we had planned to keep a boy from this litter and felt it appropriate to name him after ‘my boy’. / He is the largest of the litter, the most vocal and the biggest wimp. Tortoiseshell describes a coat coloring found almost exclusively in female cats. Cats of this color are mottled, with patches of red and black, chocolate, or cinnamon. They are sometimes called torties for short. The term “tortoiseshell” (also called calimanco or clouded tiger in North America) is typically reserved for cats with brindled coats that have relatively few or no white markings. Those that are largely white with red and black patches (rather than a brindled aspect) are described as tortoiseshell-and-white (in the United Kingdom) or calico (in the United States). Tortoiseshells and calicos are not specific breeds of cat. The tortoiseshell markings appear in many different breeds.This pattern is especially preferred in the Japanese Bobtail breed. Courtesy American Kennel Club Known for their loose-jointed, shuffling gait and massive, short-faced head, the Bulldog is known to be equable, resolute and dignified. A medium-sized dog, they are not your typical lap dog, but would like to be! They are one of the most popular breeds according to AKC® Registration Statistics due to their lovable and gentle dispositions and adorable wrinkles. The Bulldog may be brindle, white, red, fawn, fallow or piebald. A Look Back / Said to have originated in the British Isles, the name “bull” was applied because of the dog’s connection with bull baiting. The original bulldog had to be ferocious and courageous, and almost insensitive to pain. When dog fighting became illegal in England, fanciers set to the task of preserving the breed by eliminating the fierce characteristics. Within a few generations, the Bulldog became one of the finest physical specimens with an agreeable temperament. Smile Baby This is the first image I’ve captured of my Granddaughter Aminata on her belly. She’s such a cutie and is always smiling for her Papa:-) It’s amazing how a baby’s smile can draw the attention of a whole room full of adults. Just a giggled laughter from this tot will produce roars of approval from parents, grandparents and friends. She seems to know that these sounds generate interest too, and dutifully generates some more. When a baby smiles the winter blues seem to vanish, / when a baby smiles problems seem to disappear, when a baby smiles it puts the whole world into perspective, / and when a baby smiles the whole world smiles in response / So SMILE my friends, for it’s almost Christmas / when a Baby was born that changed the world / and let God’s light and love flood into the darkness.
