This is the unframed version without a quote attached. There have been requests for this version. Captive “The youth, intoxicated with his admiration of a hero, fails to see, that it is only a projection of his own soul, which he admires.” Ralph Waldo Emerson Who is you’re hero? / / Name: Panthera tigris sumatrae (Sumatran Tiger) Description: The Sumatran tiger has the darkest coat of all tigers. Its broad, black stripes are closely spaced and often doubled. Unlike the Siberian tiger, it has striped forelegs. Sumatran tigers are the smallest tiger subspecies. Males average 2.4 meters (8 feet) in length from head to tail and weigh about 120 kilograms (264 pounds). Females measure approximately 2.2 meters (7 feet) in length and weigh about 90 kilograms (198 pounds). Distribution: The Sumatran tiger is found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in habitat that ranges from lowland forest to submontain and montain forest with some peat-moss forest. Biology: The Sumatran tiger eats wild pig, big deer (called rusa), and small deer (called muntjak or barking deer). The specific range size of this tiger is not know, however the population density is approximately 4–5 adult tigers/100 km 2 (39 mile 2) in optimal lowland rainforest. As elevation increases through submontain and montain forests, the number of tigers in any given area decreases because there is less prey available. Status in the wild: 400-500 wild Sumatran tigers were believed to exist in 1998, primarily in the island’s national park areas, but no island-wide census or monitoring system has been possible. Tiger numbers have continued to decline because of poaching of tigers to supply the illegal trade in tiger parts. The last remnants of lowland forest are being eliminated to establish oil palm plantations and for shifting agriculture by recent settlers from other areas of Sumatra and Indonesia. Ongoing road development makes many formerly inaccessible mountain areas accessible to illegal logging even on the steepest slopes, and many mountainous areas are being converted into plantations for coffee and other products for international markets. Tigers are legally protected but are not highly valued. Captive breeding: For three years, the Indonesian Zoological Parks’ Association (PKBSI) has been working with the Tiger Global Conservation Strategy to develop a conservation program for Sumatran tigers. In addition to the 65 Sumatran tigers living in Indonesian zoos, there are 55 tigers managed by North American zoos, 100 in European zoos, and 12 in Australasian zoos. This captive population is descended from 37 wild-caught founders. The Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Masterplan now has the potential to function as the heart of the Sumatran tiger population worldwide. It is designed to preserve sufficient genetic diversity to reinforce both captive and wild populations, thus fulfilling its goal to ensure that the in situ tiger program comprises verifiable founders permanently identified and registered in the Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Studbook. It also extends the capabilities of Indonesian zoo staff to professionally manage their tiger programs in Indonesia, and at the same time serves as a model for other range country tiger management programs in Southeast Asia.

an original illustration of a stylized mommy elephant and her two babies in the forest
Even at two years old, Lucy knows how to go for the kill. Of course, it doesn’t look like her little brother minds too much either. In a few years, we’re going to have to start keeping an eye on these two. At least we know they love each other.
My origami calendar I folded the mother duck out of trace paper around the time I saw ducklings on the way to work; can read about that here. I can’t remember how big the paper was; I believe 13×13mm. The two little ducklings in the centre were folded from 6×6mm pieces of trace paper while the little one at the back was folded from a 5×5mm piece of trace paper. I know mother duck is just behind the 4cm mark, but the duckling at the back is infront of the 1cm mark, hence the duck family is a 3cm spread ^ _ ^ New version added August 21, 2008 / Looks great on a card! This will be the last origami piece I post before heading off to Rome; and I will unlikely be doing anymore while I’m in school. I’m not fooling around; I made these ducks before in the first version of “3cm Family Swim” as shown above; and remember I said I may redo that shot at some point? I’ll still keep the other one up though. In this coloured version I coloured the water and sky and placed a transparent ruler over the water. This one has one less duckling than the previous one (I laid off the little guy who wouldn’t raise his bum :P) Every duck was folded from trace paper; mommy duck was folded from a 15×15mm piece, the middle one was 6×6mm, and the little one at the back 5×5mm. As I walked into our living room, I saw my two sons sitting on the settee (couch) watching children’s television. Sitting there with a flat cap on, he looked as yorkshire as they come. I love the expression on his face, so full of wonder and excitement. This was the first time he sat and watched television with his brother. / original drawing on A3 acid free cartridge paper A drawing which has been digitally coloured, in which a little friend of the forest is overwhelmly touched by the beauty of a particular very old and majestic tree. She spontaneously expresses her love and gratitude with a symbolic hug, revealing her love for her surrounds during a moonlit walk. Just the thing for friends, children, nursery, birthdays, special occasions and something a little different perhaps for an unusual Christmas card.
/ / A little bit of nostalgia running through this drawing, with the good old love beads, i always love wearing love beads, and I still have some which are orange and lime … and another strand of blue and white. You can wear them so many different ways. The image was drawn in pencil on cartridge paper in my A3 spiral bound art journal and after photographing I coloured her digitally on the computer. Before I took the photo I actually painted her ‘love beads’ with acrylics and inks…and i stuck a fimo flower on her beads, which i made for another application, and then painted it naples yellow with a white centre.

/ / “Beach Picnic” is a pencil drawing which I’ve coloured digitally, I hope you like this image with mother and daughter in similar sundresses. As a child we enjoyed beach picnics all the time, mum would make us special fried chicken (better than Kentucky Fried) and we would go out on the boat to a little island, where i would play with soldier crabs for hours on end, while dad fished and mum sunbaked… they were wonderful times. We also went on the annual Beach Picnic to Bonny Hills with the church and we were great friends with the priest back in those days who was a top water skier.. We would see so many things at Bonny Hills, sea snakes slithered past in the creek where we were swimming and there were amazing white clay deposits in the sand….hours of fun were had by all… not to mention we even had a little mass there… top fun :)
