Well… it’s happened. After countless late nights and early mornings spent on RedBubble – I’ve been banned! Well really just asked to spend a little less time on RB and more time with my family. I don’t know….priorities!! I was thinking of starting an RBA group (RedBubblers Anonymous) but for now I’ll just try and cut back. Wish me luck!

Hi Everyone; This just came to me from RB support. Some of you may have seen you cards cut off on the edges when you look at them in buy/view mode. So I inquired, and here’s what they said. The preview is correct – as part of the production process some of the image is trimmed to achieve ‘full bleed’. We’re currently looking at a border option for cards – which would mean that no image would be trimmed (but this is probably several weeks away from implementation). So, you may want to review your submissions. Check the buy/preview view to determine if you need to resubmit. I have to at least four of mine over again. No wonder no one would buy these looking like that. Glad I found out. G.

I think I might do a few journal entries on things I find inspiring. The first is my favourite designer Marian Bantjes. I ran into her work early last year and I’ve just been agog since. Her website shows you her progression from the mid 90s until now, and I really appreciate that kind of transparency in artists and designers. It shows that the really good guys weren’t born with the eye bleeding talent they have today, and that’s inspirational. If you have art, design, photography, writing etc heroes – please journal about them! I would love to see where you draw your inspiration from.

Hi friends - I saw a great piece of art by Madison Ellis entitled cutting I had previously written about this all too sad of a topic in a piece called “Where Shadows Cry”. Madi and I agreed that the two simply belonged together and she has added my words along side of her work. Please have a look if you will. Self worth is hard to find for some people and sometimes the result leads to drastic measures such as “cutting.” Thank you my friends, / Rog

I’ve got some pics of interesting stuff made or found recently, but they’re not ‘art’ and don’t belong in my portfolio ;) All these photos were taken in and around our house in the Krokodilpoort Mountain range south of Nelspruit, South Africa. You can click on the thumbnail images to get a larger version. I’d suggest right-clicking and opening in a new tab or window, but that’s just my surfing habit… First up, two little samples of what I do when I’m not hanging around RB: These are cut with a laser cutting and engraving machine. We do a lot of work for a scrapbooking shop in town, as well as odd jobs now and then. Also making stencils from photos for an artistic lady who can’t draw, apparently ;) This little fellow was grazing right outside our front garden gate the other day. I took the photo from inside the house, second story, with my point-and-shoot 5x optical zoom Sony Cybershot T200. So it’s not terribly good. But it’s the first photo any of us had managed to take of game on our own property. Just for that, I need to brag with it, LOL! It’s a Red Duiker, by the way. This guy was sitting on the wall in my parent’s bedroom the other night. So we took a photo, caught it and set it free outside. I once caught one downstairs in the office. It’s a good idea not to walk barefoot in the house when it’s dark… We picked this tomato yesterday and it was just so red and glowing with sunlight and health, I had to take a photo. Took a walk and found this. The sun coming through the tree and lighting up the grass was just amazing. I just wish I could get a shot like this without the telephone cables in the background. Ah well. Finally, a water lily growing in our neighbour’s dam. Huge one. This pic was taken the same afternoon as the one above, and the sunlight was coming in at the perfect angle to light up the lily’s leaves.

In the interest of mental health, I am trying to cut back

I’m running three groups now, which were inconveniently hard to find on the list of groups, because I was in too darned many groups. I couldn’t just bookmark them, because I have too darned many bookmarks already, and i kept losing them amidst the varying shuffles. besides which, I started dreading posting new work, as it’s tiring to go through the list of all the group names and find the one, or two or few, that I need to submit to. Also, sometimes I spend hours a day doing nothing but replying to comments and commenting on new work, or at least looking to see if I feel like commenting and/or favoriting. It’s just too much for me. So, please no one be offended, as here is what I am going to do: I’ve already deleted several groups, because I never submit to them. The ones that are left, I shall go through and see which people on my watch list belong to them. If they belong to a group, I will probably delete them from my watchlist, since I can see them through the group. Exceptions are for the people I have come to know better, and/or who are likely to submit a lot of work to other groups.. After that, it will go more like it used to. Whomever comments on my work, I usually look at theirs. Or, if their work is featured on the front page, or it’s on the art page, or it’s featured in a group I’m in, I’ll usually look around at their gallery. So, I won’t be ignoring anyone. I just need more time for myself to do what I need to do. I am chronically ill, I have to work from home, and I need to devote more time to finding that work, advertising my books, and resting.

So now it’s very apparent to me that my medication has stopped working. How do I know this? Because I went psycho on a guy I’ve been dating. Yeah it was great. / I started telling him all this stuff about my past and I was crying hysterically. Then I started yelling at him for talking to someone. Me, the most non-jealous person ever. I don’t care about shit like that, I’ve been cheated on, but I also figure it has more to do with how the other person viewed our relationship than me. And oh was I wonderful, I cut myself. Yeah I haven’t done that since I was a teenager. But I was so angry and it was either that or drive over to the guy’s house and make a scene. Well I’m not proud of myself for it, but considering what happens when my medication takes a dump, it was light. So of course, I had to swallow my pride and apologize to the guy. / He took it in stride. Considering the situation. Well anyways, he of course told me I had to stop cutting myself. God I feel so stupid. I haven’t had a breakdown like that in two years. I was so proud of myself, I guess I got cocky. I should’ve paid more attention to my meds. Oh well, at least life goes on. Right? :P~~~~~~~~~

Hey Everyone! Hows tricks? thanks for reading! Yes i have read a few forums that have somewhat addressed the issue of extending the range available to RedBubble customers, but I have only read forums requesting more options for ladies tees, which I totally agree needs to happen, personally I am a fan of American Apparel™’s Sheer Jersey Girly T w/ Merrow™ Hem. So I am here calling out to all who enjoy a bit more range and diversity when it comes to custom T design. CLICK HERE FOR SAMPLES! (All images property of American Apparel™) These are very basic mockups of potential cuts available from American Apparel™ right now. Contemporary fashion has seen a shift in trend towards the V-neck, largely seen now as a fashionable unisex option whereas in the past it catered more to women’s fashion. Massive in the club scene right now, I believe RedBubble should be capitalising on this trend right now and therefore expanding it’s potential market to the trendy hipsters of the inner city club scene. On another note, diversity and range of customisation is a very desirable option to the fashion-conscience RedBubble customer as it allows for a more individual and personalised product. Comfort also seems to be an issue as some customers of mine have had small gripes about the shirts being too tight around the neck. The V-neck options I have supplied here offer a more comfortable fit for such customers. In terms of co-ordination, the v-neck accompanied by a v-neck cardigan is a very fashionable option. The purpose of this journal entry is simply to generate interest and give those like-minded members of RedBubble a place to voice their opinions and campaign to expand RedBubble’s range of cuts for a wider audience. I feel at this point I must take the time to say that RedBubble offer an extremely efficient service and deliver a consistently high quality product. The printing quality never ceases to amaze, complete strangers always comment on my shirts whenever I am out and about in the city. Customers who I know personally have also commented on the high quality of service that RedBubble offer. Thank you again for reading, all comments and opinions are welcome! Cheers, Billmund. x!

For you guys who always try to find an excuse (like me) NOT to cut that ever growing lawn It’s official, the CSIRO has outlawed lawn mowing so now you can grab your camera, keyboard or paint brushes and do some real work. “AIR POLLUTION AND THE SMELL OF CUT GRASS / Wayne Kirstine, Ian Galbally and Martin Hooper (My new hero’s) / School of Applied Sciences, Monash University, Churchill, Vic 3842, Australia / CSIRO Division of Atmospheric Research, Aspendale, Vic 3195, Australia Summary / Recently we have demonstrated that grass and cut grass are important sources of / volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions into the atmosphere. The production of / these VOCs can be traced back to plant growth, maintenance and wound defence / mechanisms. The gases emitted as part of these wound defence mechanisms are / responsible for the smell of freshly cut grass, and are also highly photochemically / reactive. These emissions from grass and cut grass are not currently included in / urban and global emissions inventories. Our preliminary estimate is that, within an / urban airshed, during the growing season, about one third of the emissions of / photochemically reactive VOCs come from grass and cut grass. These grass / emissions should be included in models of urban photochemical pollution so that / accurate smog predictions can be obtained.” If you want more ammunition I can email you the full PDF report.

Well, I sold my first card of my mistake right here. Now I’ve made sales of the design elsewhere and just wanted to share. I made coasters and a cutting board of the image at PrintFection. The cutting board sold so I decided to purchase one too. I received it today and have to say I am very happy – It looks 3 dimensional!!! http://www.printfection.com/Firecrackinmama/Treeless-Ornament-Small-Cutting-Board/_p_1705917

Hi everyone, At university at the moment i am putting together a folio of my work. As part of my theme, and my interests, i am making it feel and look a little bit like a design magazine or book. So to go with this theme, i want to make the cover look really nice and unique, and i have decided i’d like to get some letter forms die cut out of it. Here’s my problem… this is a one off job, so i am not sure where i can cost effectively have something like this done. The shape i want to die cut is not very complex, but its complex enough to render hand die cutting useless. The cover is a 330gsm card stock, so its not too thick. If anybody could give me some pointers, i’ll be very greatful :). cheers, / Alex. Ps. I live in melbourne, so a solution within melbourne would be preferable!

peep my page for a few teasers to the Drake House, a beach shack located on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, that myself and a few others attacked last week with our power tools. / We read “House of Leaves” – an amazing chronicle – to all hit the house on the same page (pardon za pun). / Campbell and I worked with the corrugated iron roof, while the others intervened inside….. / The house has just been demolished, so our work shows the house peeling its first layer off, an undressing if you will….revealing the skeleton of the house itself. / We like to image that the house kept undressing after we left, so that when the demolision crew turned up, the house had already demolished itself. / Stay tuned for an exhibition of all our work sometime in April? / You can peep Campbell’s and my first project – Blundell House at www.diretribe.com.au hope youse are all well. / peace. / akoosticckkstuut i.o.u.

Mini Coopers Galore, Design Tournament
by Ash LawsSome design stuff that fellow graphic enthusiasts might like: Linky MINI E-Mag / ...
Some design stuff that fellow graphic enthusiasts might like: Linky MINI E-Mag / Edition 3, 2007. / CONTROL + X. CONTROL + V. Art & Design Creative types rarely get to – or have to – produce work fuelled by the adrenaline rush of a live, screaming audience and panel of industry peers, however the ultimate designer shinding, Cut&Paste, provides exactly that. If you’re someone with an eye on the latest design trends – or you just like to watch other people squirm under pressure – then this Digital Design Tournament is right up your alley. Cut&Paste is an idea that was born in New York City back in 2005. Simply put, it was the world’s first live digital design tournament. In a bar packed with designers and judges a large crowd watched as something new was born. So what exactly is it? “The contest is a homage to DJ battles, dance-offs and graffiti artists,” says Justin Kim, one of the contest’s founders, on cutandpaste.com. “We want the artists involved to flex a different creative muscle than they are used to.” It’s fun, but it’s a serious competition, too. It’s a design battle happening right before your eyes – man to man, laptop to laptop. It’s the creative process revealed and intensified. This year Cut&Paste travels from cities across the United States, Europe and Asia before making its way to Sydney on November 17 at the Metro Theatre. Eight local designers will have the chance to show their stuff and compete in four elimination rounds in front of a live captive audience. There are some excellent prizes but the real glory will be in being (literally) crowned Australia’s first Cut&Paste winner. It’s going to be a great night and the bigger the audience the more fun it promises to be – so come along, dudes and dudettes. Everybody’s welcome!

Life - The Director's Cut
by Ben FarrellI’m never really here, only briefly through moments of short-lived clarity. I see and appreciate the good things but as if they are only …
I’m never really here, only briefly through moments of short-lived clarity. I see and appreciate the good things but as if they are only copies of the Devine originals as everything lacks the vibrant buzz it used to have. Something else has taken over, an inner noise that is neither sensational nor inspiring. It is as if I have a disgruntled and dissatisfied entity living within me. My perception seems tainted yet heightened to the point where other people’s negative moods spill on to me and effect me as if they were my own. I sense tense vibes like a tracker senses presence from foot tracks left in the dirt. An inner frustration persists at my conscious, robbing me of any ability to settle and be still and relax. Fear of wasting the day, wasting the night, wasting my life encourages me to drive, walk, run from one side of the city to another looking to quench an everlasting thirst for any raw happy experience. I lie on the beach and I enjoy it but I think I will look back more fondly on the memory of the experience of being here rather than this very moment, lying in the warm sun with sand at my toes, thinking incessant and irrelevant things. It is as if the mind is being used at a hundred-percent capacity when it retrieves an old memory so you only experience the memory. For a short moment as the mental movie is playing there is no more mind space to judge, criticise or comment on the memory being played. It is because of this I feel my memories possess more stillness, more peace, more clarity than the actual moment itself. They are a much less complex representation of a moment without all the unnecessary noise and judgement that stalks me during the moment itself. Now it has become as if I am wandering looking for experiences to add to my memory bank to be edited and retrieved later without the present associated mental noise, as if my memories are digitally remastered versions of an old show real. Like a tourist who views his holiday through the viewfinder of his camcorder I too am viewing my present life in retrospect but as it happens. Yet sometimes my memory becomes the director’s cut as it hijacks my experiences and puts a negative spin on them, choosing and editing particular snippets to make a moment totally different to the actual event when I relive it in my head. This director knows his target audience well and plays on my fears, paranoia and insecurity as he selects particular takes on things to play on my emotion. I sit in the cafe, trying to be still and calm, sitting in the sun and enjoying the view. But I want to leave… Where to? I don’t know, but I force myself to sit here longer, I force the experience for fear of regret? Maybe but perhaps to finish the mental movies of ‘me enjoying the sun and a coffee’ or ‘me enjoying the beach on a summer’s day’. What does this mean? I am the star of these mental films yet prefer to watch them rather than enjoy acting out the scene as it happens. They say people who suffer from depression should force themselves to do things they used to enjoy and eventually the enjoyment will come back. I ask when is this moment? When will I stop acting out a fun life I don’t always feel inside? When will I be able to put down the camcorder and enjoy the moment whether it’s captured on tape or not? / I am still waiting, waiting to start living when… Why not today, why not now? Stress and anxiety buzz around my head as not only am I inundated by mental movies of actual events but those of fictitious possible future situations, worst case scenarios if you like. That is what anxiety really is, fear of a possible future situation or predicament. The anxiety however is caused by the mental movie in your head that is poorly written, directed and acted but to you it is a real possible future situation. / Anxiety is very rarely in the present. When it is encountered in the present moment and not that of fictitious mental movies, your body takes over through fight or flight and you just deal with it. You don’t think, ponder, wonder nor do you rehearse scripts in your head of things you might want to say to people, or re run certain situations from every different angle until you’re exhausted, you just do what is needed. This is why people who suffer great tragedy often seem calm in stressful situations and know what to do. I experienced this myself when working for Melbourne’s triple zero police emergency centre. I would get some calls in which people would be hysterical and screaming. However when the police arrived on scene they would find that in fact the situation was highly exaggerated by the person who called it in and at best vaguely resembled the original scenario stated by the hysterical caller at the time. It was the callers who were calm, placid and logical. They would call to report a murder with such absolute matter of fact calmness and rationale that at first I would think it was a prank caller. However these are the ones where the police would arrive on scene to discover a bloody and violent crime. I began to understand this and would shudder as I spoke to these calm, rational and matter of fact callers as they reported to me they had killed their father, mother, lover or friend. So why is anxiety such a useless and modern day disease? We are so saturated by the media who love embellishing the truth, putting images of war and tragedy on a dramatic soundtrack with a catchy heading that we have begun to do the same to our own lives. We envisage our dramatic life being played out. Something dramatic will happen and afterwards we will drive home rehearsing in our own heads how we will tell the story to others. We get a warped sort of excitement about break the news story ‘what just happened to me’. This is depression, lack of interest, lack of energy, lack of being able to connect with positive vibes and situations. A bitter, twisted and resentful director sits in your head calling the shots putting a negative spin on everything to increase the drama. Just don’t get addicted to it. Conflict is, after all, the centre of drama and the source of most entertainment we see every day. Is this creating a culture where we are addicted to drama to the point we act it out, even fictitiously, in our own head? Do we view life as not entertaining if there’s no drama? I think it gets to a point where we actually identify with drama and connect with it on a deep unconscious level. We enjoy it’s entertainment and the spectrum of emotion it evokes, we enjoy the catharsis we go through at the end of it and it all becomes ‘normal’ when in actual fact it’s not, well it never used to be, but maybe now it is. Maybe with depression being one of the most commonly diagnosed illnesses, this is in fact the new world that we live in, hanging in suspense everyday waiting for the next episode as we play the ‘next week in my life’ teasers in our head.
