Again, another shot from Paso Robles – “Portrait of a Hot Rod Couple” – no that’s not Chris Isaak in the front seat…. however, I think he might have spent just as much time on his hair! The amount of beautifully painted machines around the couple is jaw dropping for me…. I’m defintely coming back here next year!
Scarification is a means of permanently marking the skin by cutting alone, without the use of pigments. The scars may be lighter or darker than your original skin tone and may raise up (keloid scarring). There are many ways to produce a scar but the cut must always penetrate the dermis if a scar is to be produced. The result depends as much on your skin as the method used. Black skin in particular is very good at producing pronounced keloid scars and this is a popular alternative to tattooing for people with very dark skin, for whom a tattoo might not show up very well. In many parts of Africa these scars are marks of beauty and a way to identify someone belonging to a particular group. Scarification also may mark one’s status as a civilized being, adult, or member of a specific ethnic group or initiation association. I spend a day in his school in a remote village of Benin to work on the Art in All of Us activities (www.artinallofus.org). I had really a great time thanks to the kids creativity. Please see some of their works on Benin Gallery ! hope you enjoy !! All proceeds from sales of pictures will go to the art education project of Art in All of Us (WWW.ARTINALLOFUS.ORG)

Self-portrait. There was once a day during my internship in Japan when a co-worker came to me and said she had to leave because her grandmother had just passed away. Though my Japanese was okay, I was not familiar enough with the custom to know what to say, and I was not the best with words anyhow; even in English it is hard to know what to say in such circumstances. I said to her “cheer-up” but that was it, and she had to leave so that left little time for comforting. I thought about buying her flowers or making origami roses to give her upon her return, but I wasn’t sure if giving paper flowers would be inappropriate. So I asked my mother’s opinion and questioned whether there were certain colors or types of flowers that are more appropriate for such occasions, or things I should avoid. She said in Japan they would use white for this kind of case and if I could make white lilies, it would be appropriate. So that is what I did, and I gave the paper lilies to my co-worker when she returned. So in the end, though my words could not come through, my sorrow was well expressed. My mouth disappears in the back while the lilies light up brightly in front. My mouth is closed and silent, but the lilies made by my hands bloom a thousand words. Having an overwhelming interest in customised transport, I created this piece as a self-caricature (and homage to Mad Max Thunderdome) during the recent upsurge in petrol prices- when it reaches $3 per litre, this is what I’ll look like! I drew the original piece with Indian ink and a brush, and then scanned it into Photoshop where I layered paint and textures over the original linework.

Featured Art 23 September 2009 / The Beauty of Nature Pū is the Hawaiian name for Conch Shell. A gift from the Ocean, the Pū emerges from the life giving waters with a sound that flows across the ‘Aina ( land ) and Kai (the ocean). The blowing of the Pu, a deep part of the Hawaiian culture, has multiple uses and communicates various meanings in both Religious and secular traditions. Blowing the Pū is sometimes used before a ceremony to mark the official beginning. To blow the Pū is a call to the divine. The blowing of the Pū should always be accompanied by protocol. When it’s blown, how many times and in which directions all have a complex set of meanings. The Hawaiian cultural practice of blowing the Conch shell dates back to ancient times and continues in many present day traditions. Here on Maui as well as the other Hawaiian Islands, Indonesia and the Indian Ocean, sacred protocol surround the blowing of the Pu and define when, where, for what purpose, how many times and in which directions the Pu may be blown. When done properly, the blowing of the Pu produces a sound which can carry for miles across land and sea. This beautiful and distinctive resonance once heralded the arrival of Ali’i (Royalty), the beginning of Makahiki season, and many other notable events. Special shells are cherished and handed down from generation to generation. The Triton trumpet shell is the most common type Pu used today. Many collectors and tourist have little idea of the cultural significance and of the beautiful animal which produced and lived inside this shell. The shell’s spotted inhabitant is the largest snail in Hawaiian waters and the second largest in the Indo-Pacific. When permitted to mature undisturbed, Triton’s trumpets may reach as much as 20 inches in length. Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / My images do not belong to the public domain.
