In Cappadocia, a local vendor covered this old branch with evil eye beads. His shop sits on a hill above a village carved into the volcanic tuff of the region. The evil eye beads I remember from my time in Turkey had yellow in them, unlike most of the ones we saw during our journey. They became talismans to conquer what ancient civilizations feared, such as nighttime dark, storms, earthquakes and eclipses. The blue symbolizes the sky, the white is the aura of the moon, the yellow is the sun disc, and the black spot in the middle is that little bit of evil eating away at the sky or nibbling away at the sun. In Turkey, the belief is that evil eye beads ward off the effects of the “evil eye” and bounce back any curses or ill will. You will see an evil eye bead pinned to the clothing of an infant, hanging from the rear view mirror of a vehicle, decorating the harness of a horse, painted on the back of a big truck/lorry, placed over a doorway…

A young Ecuadorian girl is carrying her baby brother on her back. Such a sight is not uncommon in South America, where kids as young as six or seven attend to their younger siblings needs while the parents work. This is a scan from a 35mm slide. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—--

Magnificent sand dune – Sahara Desert, Morocco / This was taken at first light. The fresh sand dunes with no human foot prints, just the tracks of the native animals that have been wandering during the night. We were lucky to be able to camp in a part of the Sahara where there where no other tourists. / I don’t think i have been anywhere else as quite as in the middle of the desert first thing in the morning where all I could hear was the ringing in my ears.

See more of my India Series here The ancient red door at the Agra Fort. The fort was built with red sandstone in 1565AD by emperor Akbar. Most of the underground passageways and doors are now locked, but behind them, lays so much mystery of centuries gone by.

This home never fails to capture my heart. It is in Hana, Maui, and I often purchase bananas from a small table set up out front. As Maui continues to grow and over-populate, I feel sad that we are losing beautiful plantation-era homes like this one—to be replaced by multi-million dollar villas (who’s owners will not need to sell their bananas).
