  • The Pintados festival of Tacloban City is a Filipino festival with its own unique flavor. This Pintados festival recalls Pre-Spanish history of the native Leytenos from wars, epics and folk religions. The most expected aspect of the Pintados festival are the festive dancers, painted from head to toe with designs that look like armor to resemble the tattooed warriors of old. During the course of the Pintados festival, dancers whose bodies are painted in an amazing array of colors fill the streets of Tacloban city. At first sight, they may seem outrageous as grown men pour into the streets decorated in such dazzling colors as luminous blue or neon green. But as one gets used to this and sees the dances depicted, one gets a glimpse of the history of the people that once lived on the islands of Leyte so long ago. - Taken on June 30, 2007

  • The Event of “Holika Dahan” is a sacred and mythologically vital event in India… It is carried out on the eve of Holi… the festival of colors… The story behind it was something like this… “Prahlad” was a kid who worshiped the God… His father “Hiran-kashyapu” was a devilious king, and was against the worship of a GOD by his son… He asked his sister “Holika” to get rid of this rebelious kid… “Holika”, who had a fabric which would never burn, sits in a huge fire with the kid “Prahlad in her lap… But the Good always prevails and Bad parishes… Holika parished in the fire even after having the “Fireproof Cloak” and “Prahlad” prevailed… Apart from the mythology, Fire cleansens, it removes the bad energy, it gives warmth… Fire is also one of the “Five Element” or “Panch Tatva” as called in Indian Vedas… Camera: Canon EOS 300x Film SLR / Lens: Tamron AF 70-300mm TeleMacro / Aperture: f/4.0 / Shutter Speed: 1/15 Sec / Film: Kodak ColorPlus ISO100

  • Fiestas are always a lot of fun and filled with loud music and loads of colors. In 2000 my husband and I threw a huge Mexican Fiesta even though we live on the East Coast in the USA. These are two of the hats and materials that were used during it.

  • One of the crowd scenes. People are facing the other direction from the Rio Tinto stage, because they are watching a performance. But as you can see the peole are already beginning to line up at the bottom of the stage in anticipation of the 8PM concert. I normally attend one of the indoor concerts but since it had been a few years since I roamed the outdoor venues I gladly accepted the invitation of a friend to spend time downtown. We attended the free outdoor concert by the Canadian guitarist Jesse Cook. The sound and lighting were incredible. There is something magical about listening to great music outdoors on a warm summer’s evening. Nikon D40, Nikkor VR 55-200mm lens July 9th 2009 / !

  • Janmashtami is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, an avatar of hindu deity Vishnu, who was born more than 5000 years ago. Janmashtami is a festival full of joy and gaiety. It celebrates with great pomp and show. Devotees observe fast for the entire day and it is broken after the birth of the Lord at midnight. Only milk and milk products are preferred by them, as these were the favorites of Lord Krishna. On this auspicious day, devotees recite slogans and mantras of Lord Krishna. Another important custom of celebrations is singing of Hindu Bhajans (devotional songs) during the Janmashtami festival. People involve in dance performances that portray the life of Lord Krishna. Krishna Temples are brilliantly decorated with oil lamps and festival celebration continues till early hours of morning. Thousands of devotees visit the temples on Krishna Janmashtami day to get a glimpse of their favorite God in full decoration. Special feasts will be arranged by temple authorities on Janmashtami day for devotees.
