This is a Barbary Lion, of which there are none left in the wild as they were hunted to almost extinction. Barbary Prides are now found only in wildlife parks. Lion Cub at Paradise Valley Springs, Rotorua. We got to cuddle the cub :)
This is an acrylic painting I did a couple of years ago in South Africa, now in my wife’s private collection :) Lets try to keep these amazing cats sleeping peacefully under the stars for as long as possible.
Not long before sunset we came across this lioness and cubs resting in the long grass. I got quite low to the ground for this to give the appearance of looking through the grass. I think it sort of works, but please let me know what you think (or would change)! / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / / / / / / / / / / / /
This lioness was up so early one morning that the dew still clung to her chin. I like the way the cub looks up to her as she stares ahead. / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /
Sun was out – and these cubs were soaking up the sun and very sleepy. They didn’t even wake for the camera, or for the cuddle I gave them. Magic!

This was taken at the Lion & Rhino Park in Johannesburg, South Africa. The same place Mischief was taken. While the brown lion cub was playfully naughty at 4 months old, this white lion cub could barely be bothered moving. He was 3 months old at the time. He and his 3 siblings were content sitting in the shade, watching the brown lion cubs kick up a dust storm around us. Amazing what 1 month can make to behavioural differences! All these cubs would have grown close to their full size by now and would be in the return to the wild program, teaching them how to hunt, kill and survive out there. The program is designed to help keep the white lion away from extinction, which sadly, it is dangerously close to at the moment. This was taken at the Paradise Wildlife Park. One of 2 White Lion Cubs that were born there in April of this year. I just love the size of their paws at that age, so cute. Had a hard time dragging myself away from watching them play, but they were waiting to shut the park. :D…
