  • Save Our Seals, Part II
    by Voices4Animals

    US$3.71–US$98.80

Every year sealers bludgeon seals with clubs and “hakapiks” (clubs with a metal hook on the end), drag conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, and toss dead and dying animals into heaps and leave their carcasses to rot because there is no market for their meat. Seals are also shot, but bludgeoning is preferred, because pelt buyers deduct money for every bullet hole in a seal’s skin. Veterinarians who studied a past hunt concluded that the hunters failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards and that 42 percent of the seals appeared to have been skinned alive. Despite Canada’s ‘new and improved’ methods being implemented this year, sealers are still slaughtering these pups in the same way they have for previous years. It’s unconscionable. • Icarus II, "A Cruel God"
    by Ellcott

    US$17.10–US$91.20

This is contemporary take on the myth of Icarus whose father made him a pair of wax & feather wings so he could fly and escape his imprisonment… but not heeding his fathers advice to not fly near the sun during a trial, Icarus did and his wings melted off and he plunged to his death. It took much research and trials to come up with a ‘convincing’ design for today’s athlete who is out to escape the physical limits of mortal man by using inhumane methods of body alteration to get the advantage over competitors… all in the name of world recognition, fame and a sense of power… although often disguised by truisms like “I liked the challenge” or “we’re pushing the boundaries in the name of science and humanity”. / Here Icarus has had surgical implants to enable his wings to be driven by his body’s diverted blood pressure system connected to pistons which drive the wings. This leaves his hands free for balance, carrying gear etc. Perhaps the very thing we strive for is the very thing that holds us back in our true human quest for meaning and significance. This is the first part of a diptych. The second is the “white board” display of the aftermath of this failed attempt to get off the ground… with a full analysis of what worked, what didn’t and the appeal by the Project Manager to gain more funding from the Corporate sponsor. I’ll try to put it up if anyone’s interested, but it is detailed and pretty hard to see on screen.

  • You too can help to stop bullfighting.
    by Astrid Pardew

From the moment the bull enters the ring, he is…

From the moment the bull enters the ring, he is destined to die. His death will be slow and painful, and the last moments of his life will be full of terror and confusion as he hears the sounds of a jeering crowd. For the bull, bullfighting is no “competition”. It is simply slaughter for human entertainment. During a typical bullfight, the bull is first taunted by picadors – men who ride on the backs of blindfolded horses and thrust metal lances into the terrified bull’s back and neck, twisting and gouging the lances in order to impair the bull’s ability to move and ensure that he loses as much blood as possible. Next, banderilleros run around the bull and plunge banderillas – brightly coloured harpoon sticks – into his already bloodied and mutilated back. The harpoons tear the animal’s flesh, adding to his torment. When the bull is significantly weakened, the banderilleros run in circles around him until he is too dizzy and weak to continue. Then the matador appears and provokes the exhausted animal into charging once more. The matador often doesn’t succeed in killing the bull, which adds to the animal’s suffering. If the matador doesn’t kill the bull, an executioner is called in to sever the bull’s spinal cord with a dagger. In a final act of degradation, the bull is then dragged from the arena by his horns. The bull is often still conscious and twitching as his ears and tail are cut off and held up as “trophies” before the jeering crowd. The slaughter and torment of an animal should not be cause for celebration. This barbaric blood sport must end. There is perhaps no better example of the suffering endured by bulls used for this cruel sport than the annual “Running of the Bulls”, in which terrified bulls – who will eventually be killed – are forced to run through the streets of Pamplona while spectators hit and goad them. Bullfighting is a cruel, abhorrent blood sport that should have been relegated to the history books a long time ago. We need your help today to stop the torment, / mutilation and death of these magnificent animals. Please help by signing this petition The above-image was kindly posted to me by kjgordon

  • Cruel And Determined
    by Alex Worsley

    US$3.42–US$91.20

A little idea i came up with from reading up on the supernatural and flying humanoids. - —Over 100 years ago, a man named W. H. Smith told the New York Sun that he saw a “winged human form” flying over Brooklyn, New York on September 18, 1877. Just about three years later, there were multiple reports from Coney Island, Brooklyn, of a man with bat-like wings flying overhead at approximately 1,000 feet. The man was flying toward the New Jersey coast, witnesses told the New York Times, and that he bore a “cruel and determined expression” on his face. Thanks again. Enjoy.
