I am fascinated by the Asian Elephant. On trips to Chang Mai, Phuket and Bali, we spent considerable time with these marvellous creatures, observing them at work and at play, on their own and interacting with their mahouts and members of the public. Most have heard of elephant’s long memories, but equally amazing is their sure-footedness when descending precarious slopes and balancing on submerged rocks in river crossings, their power and accuracy when playing soccer, their cooperativeness when working in teams, and their creative abilities when painting. / Here are 51 images of Asian Elephants, arranged into 17 triplets, 6 vertical and 11 horizontal. These may be purchased in various sizes from small cards to large wall hangings and posters via RedBubble.com. / The following list will be hyperlinked as each image is published over a period of 17 days. Large copies of each will also be added as “comments” to this Journal entry. / I trust that you enjoy these friends of mine – Asian Elephants. I thought I’d better explain who The Official Train Freak is. It is my son Daniel who is 8 years old. He totally adores trains and lives and breathes them. As much as I enjoy trains and photographing them, most of the comments will be from TOTF as well as myself. Thanks for listening :)

  • Southern Crossed Samhain

Thanks to a dare from Damian to write a set of linked stories for each of the Groups I belong to participating in the Spirit Walks celebration of southern hemisphere Samhain … New story! New Plan! There’s no overall title yet, unless I use the one from the journal but the components are below: / / When Moonlight Becomes You / Ring A Rosie / In Vino Spiritas / Wave A White Flag / To Tempt A Taste / Dawn of Shadows / / So I didn’t quite make the 5-Group mark. Despite potenial human sacrifice and an exiled vampire, it’s light and almost romantic, practically a romp. Now I’ll have to add a few words i really want to include, words like capricious , zest and knife ; find the link between the 2nd and 3rd pieces when my second character enters and decide how much Melbourne there should be. At the beginning it wasn’t set here specifically; then it took on the textures of my suburb, so now I’m wondering… because the plan is another Mystic Moon Press ebook.

  • The process is really very simple, and the basics can be explained in less than a minute, but to become good at taking and presenting 3D photos take a bit more time, and it’s something that really develops with practice. I hope you’ll take what you learn here and get out and get lots of practice taking 3D photos. The typical and easiest single-camera 3D photography technique is commonly called the “cha-cha” technique, for reasons which will soon become obvious. Here’s the technique in a nutshell: Taking the Photos / Always take photos in portrait orientation / Set the camera to full manual and choose the correct exposure and focus / Put your feet square on to the subject of your 3d photo / Put your weight onto your right foot, without lifting your left / Take the first photo / Put your weight onto your left foot without raising your right / Unless your subject is very close, you don’t need to turn your camera to keep it in the centre / Take the second photo / And you’re done! As simple as that. Simply by shifting your weight from one foot to the other, you move your viewpoint by several centimetres, sufficient to get a 3D effect. The “cha-cha” name refers to the side to side sway you do when taking the photo. Processing StereoPhoto Maker screenshotNow you’ve got two photos, but you need to make one. I use a fantastic piece of free software called StereoPhoto Maker. It’s not the prettiest software, but it does a fantastic job. It can be used in conjunction with a plugin called AutoPano, that can analise the two images and automatically correct for many of the problems that can come from shooting two separate images. This includes tilting and twisting, moving forward or back between shots, and the “keystone distortion” that occurs when you turn the camera to centre the subject for close 3D photos. Download and install StereoPhoto Maker. / Download and install AutoPano and link it to StereoPhoto Maker as a plugin. / Step by step Drag both photos onto the StereoPhoto Maker shortcut icon / Zoom out a bit with your mouse’s scroll wheel if you need to to make it easier to fuse the pair into 3D with the cross-eye technique / If the 3D effect seems reversed, click the swap button to swap the images correctly for a crossed eye view / Click on the auto align button to use autopano to correct for any distortions / Click on the Easy Adjustment button to fix the 3D images position relative to the 3D window (see below for more information) / I find adding a border helps, so if you like, in the menu go to View – Border Options / Check “Show Border” and adjust the border settings to your liking / Save the image by clicking in the menu File – Save Stereo Image / Enjoy your new 3d photo! http://neil.creek.name/blog/2008/03/21/how-to-take-3d-photos/ / go here for more info /

This is written specifically for the Artists with Disabilities Group … sharing how I got to where I am!! In 1988 I had my first heart attack – luckily we had a very good doctor who knew ‘hearts’ and helped me through numerous further attacks until, finally, following yet another episode, I chose to relocate to a better climate for my degenerating lungs, and ease stress by leaving behind a distressing marriage. I left directly from the hospital with only the clothes I stood up in and ended up living down the South Coasat of NSW. In 1999 my cardiologist recommended open heart surgery. After 5 bypasses I spent two weeks in intensive care, another two weeks in hospital and further time in rehabilitation … during this time other organs failed and caused some dramas also. Fortunately, I had a wonderful friend down the south coast who wouldn’t hear of me driving the 45kms to see a specialist, or do my shopping. With her help I managed to take care of myself for about ten years, till about two years ago. At that stage I opted to come into a hostel situation and be looked after as now even 100 metres was a long walk. Have been in the hostel room for two years now, and my health has continued to go downhill. I have had a pacemaker and defibrillator fitted, am on oxygen at nights, and some superdooper plumbing (although not very comfortable!!) fitted to cope with failing ‘waterworks’. With the aid of my walking frame I am finding my limit about 60 metres, walking. Cold weather is one of my greatest enemies. Thankfully the rooms are heated and my daughter had enough patience to teach me how to use a computer. I decided to buy a digital camera and join first with DPF then these crazy people on RedBubble. It has given me a new lease of life … so Max and Jennie, thanks for making my life a lot happier and content by running this group. Just hope you can cope!!! Vic (also known as The Clown Prince – because of the jokes that I paste on the door to my room to cheer the place up a bit!!!)
