This photograph was captured in the late fall on a very windy, cold, overcast day. The sun was just breaking through in the far off distance but subdued light gave the foreground a more melancholy feeling. Looking at this print transports me immediately back to this beautiful location. However, I just can’t help trying to envision all of the people who had called this house their home over the last century. This photo was taken handheld with a Canon EOS DSLR / EF 28-70mm f/2.8L lens at 58mm focal length, f/11 at 1/500 sec. It was so windy today that many of the trees had been stripped bare of their leaves, before they even had a chance to show their bright autumn colors. It seemed like winter was loudly announcing its early arrival! The turbulent gray clouds were totally obscuring the sunset tonight and the lighting was very “flat”. At least the farmer’s fields were still displaying their beautiful fall colors as darkness of night was quickly approaching. The abandoned farmhouse proudly stands in the middle of the farmer’s field, weathering another season, as it has for over a century. Farmland in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, USA This photo was was shot using a Canon EOS 10D camera with a Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM zoom lens. The focal length was zoomed to 95mm. The shutter speed was 1/90th sec. at f/5.6. The camera’s ISO was set to 400. A Manfrotto tripod was used. This is an HDR image, comprised of three exposures, processed in PhotoMatrix Pro for Mac. This evening I revisited this abandoned farmhouse in Pennsylvania Amish farm country, one more time. It was raining and becoming very foggy, but that only added to the incredible charm that I saw in this mysterious setting. I have photographed this unique location in every season and under many different weather conditions. I am trying to create a definitive record this very unusual place, focusing on the way it looks in different light and climatic conditions. This photograph was taken east of Clarkstown, Pennsylvania, from the junction of two dirt country roads, Upper Bartlow Road and Ridge Lane. More to follow… Eco-Thought • Wise use of our dwindling farmland is essential to the health of earth’s ecology. This is an Amish farm, where there is never any waste of nature’s gifts! Due to their religious beliefs, there is no electricity or motorized equipment used here at all. This is as “GREEN” as human beings can possibly be! Obviously, we cannot all live this way, but if we use this ideal as our reference, maybe we could all be a little smarter in the way we use our resources. This photo was just taken with a Canon EOS 10D camera body using a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L zoom lens set to 110mm. The shutter speed was 3/4 of a second at f/5.6.
