  • The Maiden, The Mother and The Crone From the original acrylic on 100cm x 100cm canvas. Metallic and glitter overlays… I started this mandala the week before one of my close girl friends was diagnosed with lung cancer and finished four months later – the week after she died. It was a hugely cathartic work and the three phases of the goddess reflect the changes in me over the years. I have been the warrior maiden; mothered my child and have entered into the spiritual crone phase of my life… This is a work in progress. Every year I add something to the picture as it reflects my journey through this life. Bright Blessings to all:) all rights reserved mt2008 !!

  • Grandmother Raven
    by Helena Nelson-Reed

    US$4.16–US$17.81

Watercolor on board, colored pencil. Ravens are intellegent, interesting birds with distinct personalities. Last year I taught a watercolor workshop in Yellowknife NT, 100 miles south of the arctic circle, a place that must be the raven capital of the world. Many women I met there also like them and had stories illustrating just how special these corvids are. Raven flies through the spiritual traditions and myths of Celtic and First Nations peoples. Sometimes with positive associations, other times not, depending on the culture telling the story. This painting was created a few years ago and the exerpt is taken from the portion of my notes describing the way I personally relate to ravens. My father died a few months ago, prior to that he was cared for by my mother and myself, with home health (hospice) nurses coming by every three days. Watching a loved one slowly depart mind and body over a course of days, weeks, months and even years is something many women (and men) are doing these days. Our children grow up, but within a few years we begin caring for aging parents. This painting celebrates not only raven and the waning moon, crone phase of life but the way observing the decline and death of loved ones can sober a person. We look death straight in the eye, realizing that the empty darkness within the skull’s socket is our fate as well. This realization, once it hits you in the gut, is strangely liberating and can shed new light and perspective. Sometimes, at the end of those long days taking care of dad and witnessing all that transired, I’d stand outside in the Texas night. I’d breath in the cool, cedar scented air, gaze up at the moon and try to process it all, just like the woman in this painting. “From birth, when we enter the world of light, until death, when we journey outward through the center of the Big Dipper and onward to the land beyond the pines, women own the power to perpetuate tradition and culture. Worldwide, regardless of patriarchal society’s efforts to negate, steal, and belittle this truth, woman is the cohesive balance within the family. Our caring hands deliver new life, and often escort life out of this world as well, when we care for and accompany our dying relatives to the very end. Our love and actions weave the strands of life within family and community into a cohesive net. When society convinces us otherwise, or prevents women from doing so, the net frays and unravels. The burdens are often heavy, yet women endeavor to perpetuate their powerful role within family and community. All women are sacred, carrying within the promise of future generations. Nothing and nobody can take this away. “ Text and image copyright Helena Nelson -Reed. Please do not use without written permission.

  • Legend of Little Geisha
    by Karin Taylor

    US$5.22–US$119.32

/ (Mocha timber frame/off white matt/medium size) / Greeting Card hand drawn on paper / digital painting Legend of Little Geisha / art and story by K Taylor (4/09) In the village of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan lived a poor couple who wove and carved for a living. The couple had no real possessions but were content with the beauty of the mountains and the sea surrounding them, and happy to be together. The only thing they wished for and did not yet have, was a child to call their own. One day, an ancient crone visited their home and as always, the couple offered their hospitality, gave her rice cakes and sake to warm her belly. The old crone, in return for their kindness, bestowed upon the couple the ability to have a girl child. The child grew from a seed into a strong and beautiful young woman, glowing with pride and joy, she was the delight of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan, and many young suitors came to visit and pay her homage. But as is the way with old crones, you can never quite trust them to do you a favour without some twist in the tale. Unfortunately, the seed from which the child grew, began to sprout roots, and she was bound to the earth. In time the beautiful young girl became a majestic tree and all the birds from near and far came to perch and nest in her branches, she gave them shelter from the wind and rain, and everyone who knew the legend realised the tree was actually the Little Geisha. / here’s the drawing (above) prior to being digitally coloured

  • Circle of Life
    by Julie Marks

    US$4.66–US$106.40

Many people find a fascination with youth, beauty and the advancement of old age. As we all know looks fade and with age, there is another source / of beauty despite the wrinkles and apparent signs of aging that we all must face in what has been referred to as “the croning years.” In Western culture, there is so much emphasis on external beauty that women and men feel compelled to find surgical solutions, creams, botox, liposuction and any method possible to slow down the aging process and retain the appearance of youth. For hundreds of years we in the West have been taught to deny ourselves. “Mind over Matter” is a time-honored maxim that has merit in treating illness, but the danger is that true body wisdom or the messages we receive about our bodies must be ignored or denied. Every magazine gives us methods of ridding ourselves of undesirable pounds and the newest trends and fads for reversing the aging process. One woman born in the Netherlands and moved to the United States expressed her pain about her anorexic daughter who did not feel accepted or physically attractive unless she was frightfully thin. Her mom asked, what happened to the idea of “aging gracefully?” She felt that her elderly mother was more beautiful with age and the wrinkles on her aging face showed a wisdom and inner beauty that was absent in youth. Observing her daughter’s fierce compulsion to stop the clock and pursue anything that would mask the aging process was very painful to her mother, an immigrant to the United States who had enjoyed values that helped her deal with aging and the passage of time. She told me that the term “immigrant grief” described her inability to teach her daughter who was in her mid thirties that she was more beautiful now than ever before. Many women and men can not face aging and the general result is that the body and its functions have been relegated to the shadow side of life;regarded as dark and possibly evil. As Jung points out, “The body is a most doubtful friend because it produces things we do not like;there are too many things about the body which cannot be mentioned. The body is very often the personification of the shadow of the ego. Sometimes it forms the skeleton in the cupboard, and everybody naturally wants to get rid of such a thing.” We need our animal selves, our bone, muscle, and instinct-laden physicality to survive on this planet. One wonders why we as a culture have become so anti-body, as our very flesh were a disease against which we must wage war. Jung hoped that “we can reconcile ourselves to the mysterious truth that the spirit is the living body seen from within, and the body is the outer manifestation of the living spirit.” / For centuries many terrible cures attempted to cleanse the collective psyche or the ancient goddess worship that honored the female body as the matrix in which there were no divisions. There are many books that celebrate the return of the Goddess, to cherish the power of the feminine and to accept all the disowned parts of the psyche that lead us to illness and become pathological enough that we are forced to notice. When disowned aspects of ourselves are repressed, fear is projected onto the body in such forms as siren, enchantress, witch, hag and devouring mother. When we face our greatest fears, we also see the glimmering hope of of a new creative life. / When we accept that as we age our bodies are mortal, we can embrace our terrors and our failures and the hope for the celebrations to come, when what we have incubated emerges from the underworld. Legend and myth tell us again and again that transformation is possible. The maiden becomes the queen. The dragon becomes prince or princess. The fool becomes wise. The naive attitudes of youth change and develop. Slowly we become ourselves, free to be the keepers of memory and wisdom. We learn when to be silent and when to speak, what can be shared and what is secret. We learn to honor our bodies even as they begin to fail. We come to a visceral understanding of the cycles of change and our part in them. Ulrich Schaffer writes in his book of poems, Surprised By Light; “Again and again the miracle takes place / in the amazing transformation / in which the air turns into leaves / and the earth becomes roots, / in which the sun fills the seed to bursting / then lets it break open and sprouts, / New life breaks through / in the transformation of death. We are sustained by the surprise of the miracle, / by the change of the seasons, / and I am a link in this miraculous chain, / In me the unchangeable also changes, / and I know that I would break / the rhythm of creation / if I did not change / I would be dead to life / even as I continued to live. I am not yearning for great miracles, / but for the daily change, / the almost imperceptivle rebirth, / the insignificant miracle of growth, / which is greater than all others. “ It is a sad fact that as we approach old age, the deterioration or our bodies / seem loathsome. In fright, we run off into frantic activity, becoming too busy to think or feel as we sink deeper and deeper into a paralyzing depression. / Only rarely do we have the wisdom to honor our changes and allow their development. Most of us, unguided and untaught, flee in fear from the life that precedes our old age and death. Today in the Western world the human life span is increasing, and as it does, the need grows for a deeper wisdom that can help older persons honor rather than deny the physical and psychological relinquishing that precedes a late blooming. We are explorers of a stage of life that is different than it was for previous generations. The years of coming to age are now a new challenge and like most challenges bring the stresses of relinquishing familiar ways. Going through the changes of this time can be as exciting and as difficult as any outer journey. Those of us now coming to age are pathfinders, hopefully marking a way for others to follow.

  • Triskele
    by tkrosevear

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Celtic Mandalas are mysterious and embedded with secrets and symbols, offering a unique way to connect with ancient spiritual and aesthetic realities. It was almost hypnotic, even revelatory as I played with this “Triskele” or Triskelion – consisting of three sacred spirals or ‘Trinity’ representative for me of the Sacred Feminine, or Maiden, Mother and Crone energies. Symbolic of the on-going cycle of birth, life and death for the Celts…a primordial power that inspired them to be treated as sacred motifs. • Celtic Goddess Trinity
    by tkrosevear

    US$3.99–US$91.20

The Celtic symbol for the Triple Goddess of Maiden, Mother and Crone. The eternal Maiden within, full of promise and hopes to come; the innocent child with the ability to see with clarity and purpose; and, the virgin self. Gaia, the Mother within, giving birth to seeds conceived by the maiden; nourishing growth to nurture ideas and projects. The love of the Mother is always within through pain, joy, tears and laughter deeply in your heart. The wise Crone within, full of the ageless wisdom of nature, barren, yet beautiful whilst holding the keys to the underworld and understanding the mysteries of death. I am change, sacrifice and transformation representing both death and birth in infinite wisdom. All three of these qualities are within every female to call upon when necessary. / Drawn with pen and ink, photographed and edited in photoshop7 with Redfield plug-in fractilius highlights. • Samhain - October
    by AngelaBarnett

    US$3.99–US$91.20

upload from my 2009 calendar Celtic Dreams

  • This image was started in hospital after my partner lost a baby and i finished it this week whilst recovering froma liver biopsey so this image has a lot of meaning for me. / I have seen many examples of the three phases of the goddess and these are those i am most drawn to and all have had a place along the path i have chosen. The Morr’igan is the Celtic goddess of sexuality and war, she is powerful knows herself, if she is on yourside you can acomplish anything but betray her and theres a sting in her tail, so be careful and respectful of her at all times. To me the Morr’igan is my femanist side the old me who worked in turning the tide of all those injustices women face in the real world. back then i was known for my flame red hair and my sence of being a women on a mission. Isis, She is the mother her wisdom is still seen today in the images of Mary. She has tolarance and understanding and nurtures new life. And creativity with out which i dont know where i would be today, she is my anchor and link to reality when my brain is away with the fairys, she is the goddess that no matter how drained and down i get helps me to see the need of others. Hercate, the crone she is the wisdom in the darkness, she hold all the secrets of the world, life to her is a endless mystery. in short she knows everything and theres no hiding anything from her. To me shes my guild, my common sence, she helps me see lifes path in many ways and that sometimes you have to turn the puzzel on its head and think outside the box, she is the goddess who helps me keep it together and shares her secret in those littel moments that others miss. now with my hair going grey i feel quite comfetable with her guildance. well there you have it in short i hope these goddesses help you as much as they help me Blessed Be to you all

  • Night of Hecate
    by tkrosevear

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Dark of the moon, blazing torch in hand / the goddess Hecate walks the land Three roads crossed with her sacred dogs / loyal to magic shared and secrets of fog Guarding households, this goddess of death / protects all newly born upon their first breath Healing is her gift for change to take place / smoothing passage, pain leaving no trace Maiden, Mother and Crone wise beyond years / keeper of traditions lost amongst too many fears On this night, the power is true to stand up / femininity asserted to fill one’s own life cup. tkrosevear 11/16/2008 Last year, I celebrated this “Night of Hecate” with two other wise women in collaboration to a writing called Crossroads to Humanity the fourth installment from Peace Candles. / Elsie Duggan , also from Redbubble was one of the contributors, Liz is also on RB but not so active. The image is a stock photograph of Hecate’s Straight between the Queen Charlotte Islands and British Columbia mainland, Canada with a merged photo of a Hecate statuary from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, US. Hecate was a beautiful and powerful goddess in her own right, she was the only one of the ancient Titans who Zues allowed to retain their authority once the Olympians seized control. Zues shared with Hecate, and only her, the awesome power of giving humanity anything she wished (or withholding it if she pleased). / Usually classified as a ‘moon goddess’, her kingdoms were actually three-fold…the Earth, the Sky and Sea. Having the ability to create or withold storms undoubtedly played a role in making her the goddess who was the protector of sheperds and sailors. / Hecate was called upon, requesting her guidance in helping to choose the right direction, as well as protecting and restoring the health and growth of a child. She also played a role helping the elderly make a smooth and painless passage into the next life and staying with them to help them , preparing them for their eventual return to earth in their next life. / Hecate reminds us of the importance of change, helping us to release the past, especially those things that are hindering our growth, and to accept change and transitions – asking us to let go of what is familiar, safe and secure and to travel to the scary places of the soul. On this night, if you had Hecate’s powers…WHAT WOULD YOU GIVE HUMANITY? Between the Shadows
