Obviously this is every gamers Pin-up girl Lara Croft aka The Tomb Raider. Now I wonder just how many gamers wish this scene would happen just once in a while during the game. I’m betting sales would have trebled for Eidos, would have made a great film too. Tomb Raider meets Benny Hill LOL!! I was going to have her saying “Oh shhh..sugar!” but it just didn’t seem right.

Early morning Autumn sun hits Blackrock Cottage, Glencoe, Highlands of Scotland .
A montage of my photographs, the traditional Scottish Croft was photographed on the magical Isle of Ulva, Scotland and the woods were photographed on a misty morning in July on the Isle of Mull, Scotland.
This has got to be every gamer’s fantasy; Lara at his mercy. Then again perhaps that cheat code that makes Lara’s clothes disappear ranks a little higher in the gamers wish list. Anyway since the good lady always seems to have the upper hand in situtations I thought I’d put in a spot of bother and have her guard get the upper hand.. and perhaps a lower hand or two as well.

FEATURED in First Things April ‘09 with thanks I found this wonderful old croft house on Achill Island (pronounced /ˈækəl/; Irish: Acaill, Oileán Acla) in County Mayo. This is the largest island of Ireland, and is situated off the west coast. It has a population of 2,700. Its area is 148 km² (57 mi²). It’s gorgeous. It is believed that at the end of the Neolithic Period (around 4000 BCE), Achill had a population of 500–1,000 people. Mostly forested until the Neolithic people began crop cultivation; settlement increased during the Iron Age, and the dispersal of small forts around the coast indicate the warlike nature of the times. Today the economy of the island is largely dependent on tourism; agriculture plays a small role and is only profitable because of European Union subsidies. As the island is mostly bog agriculture is limited largely to sheep farming. / Canon EOS 400D 18-55mm lens.

A croft is a very small farm, or smallholding. Sheep and a few cattle will be kept, and maybe a few crops grown, mostly potatoes, since they do well on the often wet and impoverished soil. Summer is a very short season at this Latitude (57 degrees North) Very few people will make a full living from crofting, and have other full- time employment. There are also quite a few ‘holiday cottages’, or second homes, purchased by ‘incomers’ / since many indigenous folk have given up the crofting life for what they consider to be an easier, or more attractive living. / The weather here can be pretty unforgiving !! / Tarskavaig, on a day like this, sits in a very idyllic situation , with the Cuillin hills as a backdrop. The mountain here is known as ‘The Blaven’. Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, f22, with polarising filter, on tripod, single RAW file, processed in PS CS3 with Levels and Curves adjustments. LAB colour employed to saturate the colours. / The line of cottages was used to draw the eye into the scene. From the Shetland/Dreamtime series - Croft House Museum, Boddam, Shetland, Scotland. Mr Smith [“da crofter”] was photographed in the but-end. The human dwelling is divided into two rooms, the “but – end”, which is the main living room, and the “ben – end”, the family’s sleeping room. if the but-end was the main focal point of the hoose, I love the intimacy of its ben-end – da peerie cradle at the end of the [open bed, as pictured right] – the rudimentary dresser in the corner and boxed bed with its heart-shaped finger hole… Boxed beds were extremely practical in those times for keeping dry, warm [away from any draft] and safe from any smoke emanating from the hearth as well as a degree of somewaht privacy so limited in the hoose… / They would stand on four legs, approximately fifteen inches from the floor, and usually measured about six feet by four feet. Sleeping arrangements were such that the parents and grandparents of the household would have had a box to themselves. The children were segregated by their gender, all the boys sleeping in one box and all the girls in the other. As many as three children could fit into a box bed at one time. And oh, its last occupant, Bobby Mouat, left in 1962.
