Mother Nature loves a bit of ‘bling’
THE SUBJECT: / A very colourful and contrasting display of Crocosmia crocosmiiflora just after a light shower. / The bright orange of the flowers and the lovely green of the stems and foliage stands out very well against the almost pure black of a bushfire blackened tree trunk. / While these are very attractive flowers and are native to other parts of the world the sad thing is that they are not native to Australia and have become garden escapees to the point where they are classed as weeds in many areas and are successfully competing with the native flora. Eradication is very difficult. THE LOCATION: / Photographed near Bridal Veil Falls along Comboyne Road between Comboyne and Byabarra , west of Wauchope Returned Soldiers League Club , NSW, Australia . THE MAKING of ‘Crocosmia crocosmiiflora (Montbretia)’: / The distance of the subject from the tree and my focal distance combined very well to give a 3D affect to the plant. / Fuji S9600: RAW, f/4.5 @ 1/125sec, ISO80, Hand held. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. Talk about having breakfast in bed!
Taken at Catherington cemetry. Crocosmias produce dense clumps of upright iris-like foliage. In midsummer this makes a good background for the small, profuse flowers. ‘Lucifer’ is an aptly-named variety because its flowers are the hottest coloured of all – a searing paprika red. The individual blooms are not as big as other crocosmias’, but small-flowered varieties such as this are the hardiest which makes them a wise choice in cold districts. Grown in a flower border, they provide structure and colour.
I am not sure what this variety is called . It grows in my garden and comes up year after year.
