Great Crested Grebe nesting at the University of York. / Girlies had taken me Grebe hunting today and I was delighted to find a second nest, this one quite close to the edge of the lake and reasonably accessible through a bramble patch. Mrs Grebe saw & heard me approach but for once I had the camera ready and so was fast enough to get this view of her crest fully raised as she turned her head towards me. Edwardian ladies thought this wonderful crest should decorate their hats, rather than the birds’ heads. The grebes were hunted almost to extinction to satisfy this vanity. / Wild birds nesting at the University of York, UK. / 240409 / Sony H50 native lens crop PSE4 filter disposablewarmwashblurdodge / 240409 Mummy grebe This sky where we live / Is no place to lose your wings. / So love, love, love. / Hafiz حافظ Human beings are members of a whole, / In creation of one essence and soul. / If one member is afflicted with pain, / Other members uneasy will remain. / If you have no sympathy for human pain, / The name of human you cannot retain. / Saadi All profits from my sales will be donated to Butterfly Conservation. Design is a distressed version of a mon (Japanese family crest) I created based on the abstracted form of symbol representing the Earth (in this case, water or oceans).

A Crested Cara Cara is a member of the Falcon family. Cara Cara’s will feed on small snakes, lizards and other small prey but their main diet is carrion. Often found like you see in this photo on the fence line over looking the highway for any fallen prey. These birds live in a concentrated area of Central Florida, and virtually unknown outside the interior of south and central Florida. I have tried for many years now to capture one of these cool looking birds, although seen many times, often out of reach of my 300mm lens. This is my all time favorite shot because it took me 3 long years to get. It took me some time before the birds realized I wasn’t a threat and allowed me to get close enough to them to start capturing them with detail and mass. This is my story about the above image with the meaning of the scene… "As the tide started to flood the reef the crested terns began to land for an easy feed of small unsuspecting fish and crustations that where making their ill fated journey across the surface with the normal safety of the tide being maybe outweighed by the number of hungry terns waiting for them to swim and crawl past..?" All images from this series are hand held there is no time for tripods, shoot and ask questions later.. I shot this image with a 17-50mm lens and shot 8 Gig of images from this session I may never really get through all of them but I had an awesome time capturing them..
