Shot at the trainstation in Aarhus, Denmark in January – a train was leaving the station, and as I walked up along the carts, I noticed this guy sitting there. I moved a couple of carts ahead, put the viewfinder to my eye, waited for him to get in the picture – and snap.

A Susan Epps Oliver original 2008. All rights reserved This work was derived from basically a happy snap taken whilst out walking on Skyline Drive in Virginia. The night I worked on it was stormy and kind of eerie so I decided to imagine how the bridge might have looked on that night. I used the fractalius filter ( Photoshop plug-in ) to give the stringiness to the foliage and then played with many variations in brightness/contrast, colour etc until I arrived at the effect I wanted. It was about 3 hours work which included cloning out stuff which I thought made the image look cluttered. Original is Acrylic painting on Canvas. for all hallows eve… The carved pumpkin, lit by a candle inside, is one of Halloween’s most prominent symbols. / These lanterns are usually carved from a turnip or swede (or more uncommonly a mangelwurzel). / The jack-o’-lantern can be traced back to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling, hard-drinking old farmer. / He tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him by carving a cross into the tree trunk. / In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack, condemning him to forever wander the earth at night. This story has been passed down through generations of Irish families. / The carving of pumpkins is associated with Halloween in North America, where pumpkins were readily available and much larger, making them easier to carve than turnips. Many families that celebrate Halloween carve a pumpkin into a frightening or comical face and place it on their home’s doorstep after dark. In America the tradition of carving pumpkins is known to have preceded the Great Famine period of Irish immigration. / The tradition of carving vegetable lanterns may have been brought over by the Scottish or English—documentation is unavailable to establish when or by whom. The defensive Tower house of Smailholm, just over the Scottish border, near Kelso. The tower was built in the mid 1400’s at a time when lawlessness and violent bands of reivers, ravaged the lands both sides of the English-Scottish border. And a solitary white swan, resides below the Tower Even today, the landscape is lonely, and you can easily imagine the starkness of those dark days. Dreary dull, grey, original digital photograph. / Lots of photoshop layers and borrowed sunset from my bonny Northumberland, Budle Bay photo. Inversion and refining with digital painting….. it would have been easier to conventionally paint this!!

Clandestine
by parmiAnother one of Melbourne’s magical lane ways. This one runs between Bourke Street and Little Bourke Street. I love the industrial urban grunge this one has. The graffiti on the bin in the foreground reads COOKIE, as the building at the end of the lane way is The Curtain House, a multi level building housing Cookie, The Toff In Town and the Rooftop Bar & Cinema (in summer). This particular lane had a dark feeling to it. Although not overly dirty or strewn with rubbish, I could imagine the underbelly of Melbourne meeting here for some illegal operation. Do we have assassins in Melbourne? If we do, I’m sure this would be the perfect crime scene!
