Last night, upon entering my living room, my entire family was there to greet me. I immediately sensed a disturbance in my world. I recognized the setting even though this scenario had never occurred for me before. It was an intervention. “OH MY GOD,” I thought to myself, as I became more nervous wondering what the hell I did to deserve this sort of attention. “Had I been drinking too much?” “NAH, that can’t be it.” I thought quickly as they swarmed to block my escape route to the stairs. Then a man in the back spoke. He said, “Your family is worried. They don’t spend much time with you anymore. They feel that RedBubble is like crack.” “WHAT?” laughing. “Crack? – you are absurd,” I barked at them all. My mind circled now… / Were they insane? I know that I have been spending the last month consumed in “the bubble,” but I didn’t think that was a problem. I desperately tried to explain that in the bubble I feel inspired to create. When I read the motivational words of my fellow artists it feeds my continued desire to better myself. In the “real” world the normal folks don’t understand what it takes to create each piece. So, to hear praise from fellow artists it means more than the others. The bubble fuels my desire to display work publicly, though I am not doing it today. My fear has always been “those” people and their critique of my work. The bubble is safe for me. It feels good. That is when my family said, “So, Kara… this doesn’t sound like RedBubble Crack to you?” “Well, now that I have explained it out loud – I guess it does.” I offered to my family that I would see if RedBubble would host some RB Anonymous Forums for all of us that are RB Addicts (joke). My family didn’t find this funny AT ALL. The intervention did end well. I admit I am an RB addict! (You say: Hi Kara!) I am proud of it. I want to thank each and every one of you that has left me positive feedback, those of you who have chosen a piece as your favorite, or have added me to your watchlist.

As of today, 4/6/08 I’ve cracked the 4000 views mark. Sold zilch, not even a T-Shirt, as yet. :-) Super, I really am staggered —over 1000 views (1008 at time of writing) from all over the place, and from all the wonderful people to did the viewing. I actually wrote a little tirade about not having sold anything off RedBubble® but it seemed that RedBubble® took offense ‘cause it never actually got to my journals. But I have’nt sold anything—lots of views but no sales. Mama. Addendum : Now 1446 Views with the highest being 97, 78 and one of my earliest images a wopping 46. Rest rest are less than 10 views.

Many of you have asked how I created Cracked and Cracked II...
Many of you have asked how I created Cracked and Cracked II. I use Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Lightroom. Lightroom is not required, but it helps. First, open a photo of whatever you are wanting to use in Photoshop. Make sure the lighting and clarity is good. Crop it to your liking. Use the Spot Healing Brush to take out any blemishes or anything else you don’t want on the photo. Add another layer and name it Cracks 1. To make the cracks in my photos, I download several brushes from the internet. It’s all free. Here are some websites I’ve found that I use. Website 1 / Website 2 The second website is DeviantART. There are TONS of different brushes you can download. It’s great. Upload the brushes into Photoshop. Put the brushes (as .ABR files or it won’t work) on your desktop. It’s much easier to find them that way. Select the brush tool and pull down the menu. There should be a little triangle arrow beside the pixel number. Click that, load brushes and select all the .abr files on your desktop. Hit load. The brushes will then be added to your brush list. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! It’s very smart to save all your photoshop brushes into a huge .abr file. Go to the triangle and click save brushes. Decide on a name and place for the file. Anytime you edit your brushes, save it again and replace the existing file. That way, if photoshop ever resets your brushes (it has to me many times) you can just load the file back in. Make sure the new layer is selected. Go to your brush palette and play around with which brush you want to use and the placement. Be sure to add new layers each time you use different brushes. That way, if you don’t like a set, you can delete the layer instead of accidentally erasing the cracks you like. Save the file as a .jpg and .psd file. Yes, it does look a little weird, but we’re about to add the color. If you have Lightroom, open it up and import your .jpg file. Here, you can change the color more effectively. Decide on 2 colors that you like. You can also play with the lighting, recovery, clarity, saturation, vibrance, etc. Be sure to export the changes. When you’re done, you should have saved 2 pictures with the same editing done in 2 different colors. If you don’t have Lightroom, that’s ok! Make sure the whole file is one layer now. Use your .jpg file. Go to Image>Duplicate. You should now have 2 files open. There are different ways to change the color. You can go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation or you can go to Image>Adjustments>Photo Filter. There are other ways but they are more complicated. When you are done editing the colors to your liking, you should have 2 photos with the cracks you applied in 2 different colors. If you edited in Lightroom, open up the 2 files in Photoshop. Have your 2 different colored images side by side. Go to the Move Tool and drag one image on top of the other, depending on which color you want to show more. For Cracked, I used the eraser with a circle brush and erased out certain areas on the photo. For Cracked II, I selected a cracked brush and erased with it. It’s your choice. Next, you can go to Filter>Texture>Craquelure and play with the settings to your liking. This filter was used on Cracked, but not Cracked II. And that’s how it’s done! Glad I’m not the only one. I should point out this is Brisbane, in California, US. BRISBANE – When the City Council asked local artist Beth Grossman to create a special art exhibit in honor of the opening of the new City Hall, they didn’t expect her to request to photograph their backsides. “They actually agreed,” she said, with an uproarious laugh. “They were really good sports about it.” The exhibit, titled “Seats of Power,” opens with a special ceremony Wednesday. With it, Grossman hopes to encourage people to think about civic involvement from the chairs’ perspective. Ten people in positions of power in Brisbane agreed to participate, including the mayor, entire City Council, police commander, fire chief and harbormaster. Grossman photographed the participants as they stood pressing their (clothed) derrieres against a sheet of plexiglass to make them look “squished,” the way they would be in a chair, she said. She sent the photos to a jacquard weaver, where they were intertwined with fabric that she then used to upholster seats. The seats will be hung on the walls of the new City Hall conference room. Grossman, who has been heavily involved in city politics since she moved to Brisbane more than a decade ago, said the project is intended to make people think about leadership and civic responsibility. She said the object was also to humanize the people on the other side of the podium. / Councilman Steve Waldo agreed to play along. “After she explained to me what she was going to do, I said, ‘Sure, why not?’”

The door paintings have been featured again, and I’m so happy about that…let us think about the significance of doors for a minute…In Roman mythology, Janus (or Ianus) was the god of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings and endings. Significantly, he has two faces, and looks both backward and forward..(I am convinced that my name, which means “God is Gracious” is tied up with his)..His most prominent remnants in modern culture are his namesakes: the month of January, which begins the new year, and the JANITOR, who is a caretaker of doors and halls [wiki]....doors mean safety, security, protection from the outside world, wind and weather, to name a few... / When I open my front door I am entering a haven, a place I call home and I always stop in the front hall to take in the feeling of peace that is evoked….on another level, we talk of the door to the soul, the heart, to heaven…in deconstructing the door, I want to evoke all the emotion that may arise in a viewer of the work and at the same time celebrate the artistry that composes it’s parts.
