Winner of the Still Life Painters In Modern Times competition Thanks to everyone to voted for me and supported me in this event, I’m very honored by the feature and thankful! Take care! 12×12 Acrylic on ceramic; mounted to a hand finished wood box frame. This still life painting was created for a donation to the March of Dimes ‘Signature Chef Auction’, in Portland Oregon, helping saving babies! / This is one of two paintings I created for the series I call “Maine Dish”; they were fun to create and taken from my personal experience crabbing and fishing. In these works I really tried to capture some of the classic beauty of Maine from the color combinations I chose of the warm mahogany hand finished frames to the very detailed painting of the shellfish themselves. As you study these works closely there are many details to notice, I included like the lobster shells lustrous shine and the crab’s shells colors and texture. I tried to breathe real life into them. I hope you enjoy them as well. For commissioned work you can contact Carrie at: carrie@carrieglennstudios.com and please visit Carrie Glenn Studios

Eurasian Eagle Owl ( Bubo bubo ) This little girl who has no pet name as yet they just call her baby she is only three weeks old and is part of a successful breeding program and probably the cutest bird that I have uploaded to date she was just adorable…. (-: Description: When of adult size the upperparts are brown-black and tawny-buff, showing as dense freckling on the forehead and crown, stripes on the nape, sides and back of the neck, and dark splotches on the pale ground colour of the back, mantle and scapulars. A narrow buff band, freckled with brown buff, runs up from the base of the bill, above the inner part of the eye and along the inner edge of the black-brown, “ear-tufts”. Habits: Active mainly at dusk to dawn. Flight is noiseless, whith soft wingbeats interrupted by gliding when flying over long distance. Will sometimes soar. Voice: A deep, monotonous “oohu-oohu-oohu”. The female’s call is slightly higher than the male’s. When threatened, they may bark and growl. Hunting & Food: Eagle Owls have various hunting techniques, and will take prey on the ground or in full flight. They may hunt in forests, but prefer open spaces. / Eagle Owls will eat almost anything the moves – from beetles to roe deer fawns. The major part of their diet consists of mammals (Voles, rats, mice, foxes, hares etc…), but birds of all kinds are also taken, including crows, ducks, grouse, seabirds, and even other birds of prey (including other owls). Other prey taken include snakes, lizards, frogs, fish, and crabs. / The most common type of prey depends largely on relative availability, but are usually voles and rats. In some coastal areas, they have been known to feed mainly on ducks and seabirds. / Pellets are somewhat compressed, irregularly cylindrical or conical shaped, averaging about 75×32 mm (3×1.25”). Habitat: Eagle Owls occupy a variety of habitats, from coniferous forests to warm deserts. Rocky landscapes are often favoured. Adequate food supply and nesting sites seem to be the most important prerequisites. Distribution: North Africa, Europe, Asia, Middle East.

A Crab Spider sits motionless on a leaf waiting for prey. / Crab spiders are not active hunters. They make use of their camouflage techniques more than other spiders and catch their prey with their front legs. The color of the spider is adapted to the hunting terrain they use and is mostly extravagant. They remain unmoved until the prey arrives and they catch it and with a poisonous bite (not dangerous to humans) they kill their prey and suck it dry. They can be found on flowers or leaves of plants. Often the crab spider remains for days, even weeks at the same spot. The front two legs, that are often larger and stronger than the other six, are held sideways, ready to catch the prey immediately. Because they sit on easily spotted places they are also easy to catch by the predators. When they spot a possible enemy they move quickly at the other site of the flower or leave. Their eyesight is excellent developed as can be seen on the pictures. They have normally two big front eyes. Crab spiders are easy recognizable if you tease them. They widen their legs and move side ways like a crab. Their size is between 4 – 10 mm. Due to their nature of hanging out on flowers and their hunting strategy, Crab Spiders are also known to be called Flower Spiders and Ambush spiders.

Mongooses live in Asia, Africa, and southern Europe, as well as some Caribbean islands, where they are introduced species. Mongooses mostly feed on insects, crabs, earthworms, lizards, snakes, chickens, and rodents. However, they also eat eggs and carrion. Some species, such as the Indian Mongoose, are popularly used to fight and kill venomous snakes, even king cobras. Some species of mongoose are fairly intelligent and can be taught simple tricks, which has led to a number of them being domesticated, often kept as pets to control vermin.
