  • This pub has just reopened after extensive refurbishing and is a wonderful, warm and relaxing place to go with friends. The food is great. But I am not writing an advert. I just love this centerpiece. It is wonderfully compelling even in the heat of summer. I can hardly wait to see what it will be like in winter!

  • © 2009 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved ~~ The 27th image in ‘The Journey’ series. Everyman has enjoyed a festive meal with Henry and Lord Chartham, and they have retired to the library for relaxation and talk. Everyman tells of their conversation: “The repast was everything that Lord Chartham had promised – very impressive and certainly sumptuous. Henry and I ate with the customary gusto of young men while Lord Chartham proceeded much more leisurely; he seemed to derive great pleasure from our hearty appreciation of his table. The servants attending were remote, formal and correct – much more so than our host himself, who, after asking of my travels and background, proceeded to regale us with tales of his adventures in fighting the Scots and pursuing lovely damsels. I was too awed, and Henry too familiar with these stories, to ask questions or interrupt. After we had finally put away all we could possibly eat, Lord Chartham asked for a tankard of small ale for each of us and led us into a dark but welcoming room, in which the walls were lined with manuscripts and volumes of every sort and age and where there was comfortable seating for all of us. After the manservant had delivered the ale, Lord Chartham turned to me and demanded: ‘So, friend of my nephew, tell of what Florica revealed to you.’ I was somewhat taken aback by his tone of command, which Henry perceived, and he cried to his uncle, ‘My lord, that’s a bit of harsh probing to put to a guest in your manor after a scarce few hours of acquaintance.’ I was horrified by Henry’s familiar tone until I remembered he had been living in this place a very long time and doubtless knew what he could and could not do in regard to his uncle’s temperament. And indeed, Lord Chartham let go a laugh and said, “Young puppy, you are fierce in your defense. Let me remember my hostly position.’ He turned to me again and said more quietly and seriously, ‘I do not ask merely for the purpose of entertainment, but because I know Florica well and can perhaps help you with her message.’ I nodded in reply and began, ‘Much of what she told of was unintelligible to me – she made much of my knowing myself, my need to look inward for answers and how my journey would not take me away from what I perceive as familiar but closer to understanding it. As I have had such uncommon encounters along my way, I am not sure what to make of this.’ Lord Chartham leaned toward me, took a great quaff of ale, and replied, ‘The lady places great value on self-knowledge, and what she is telling you is to recognize each step of your journey as a revelation of a part of your inner man, a part about which you must educate yourself. Was there more?’ ‘Yes,’ I continued. ‘She foresaw I would end my journey in a place I knew well, but emerge from it a stronger and wiser being if I listened to mine own voice as it spoke to me in dreams and in my meetings with the world, and that nothing is to be observed lightly.’ ‘Ah,’ said Lord Chartham, ‘that is good advice, and I urge you to follow such. I have benefited much from Florica’s wisdom since she has been in residence here.’ / Curiosity about how and why Florica had come to be here and remained burned in my brain, but I was far from knowing what might give my host offense or seem an improper inquiry, so I merely gave a sign of agreement. Henry had clearly grown impatient with the topic and importuned his uncle to tell us more of his travels and adventures away from Chartham Manor, and as the silent manservant arrived with fresh tankards Henry and I made ourselves more comfortable and listened to Lord Chartham tell of sleeping on the frozen ground, the barbaric fare in Scotland and of a woman he had loved but lost. / Thus passed my evening at Chartham Manor, and as the night closed in on a new day, the three of us eventually made our way to our chambers, having eaten and drunk much over the passage of hours.”
