I think its time to have a laugh at my expense. / A day of instability in the skies. Convection, thunderstorms, cauliflower mushrooms in the sky. The first real spring signs trying to stop summer from arriving early! Woo hoo, the storm chaser in me comes to life and I am itching to get out of work and be free to do my wants. Time – doesn’t it drag when you want it to fly? 5:30 – time to go! 30 minutes to home, no traffic lights, no stop signs …. and ….. no damned storms! What? no no no… The daytime heat has gone and with it the instability. / Then – the phone rings. “flashes to the west! / Alright, grab camera and stumble in the dark off across the paddock, through the gates, through the pines to the hilltop with the view. / Senses are wired, eyes straining, c’mon flash again! Just one bolt would be enough. “sniff, snort” What the? Oh, thats right the cows are in this paddock. Haste makes you forgetful. Oh – the bull is also in this paddock. Oh the bull is black and hard to see in the dark. Oh the Bull is 10 feet away and looking straight at me with my interesting shiny gadget called a camera. hhhhmmmm, is he moving towards me? Its hard to see. hhhmmmm – judges distance between gate and me and distance between bull and me. Coward takes over and I back away through the gate with a big black shadow following. / Dammit! / Whats that warm wet feeling on my foot? hhhhmmmmm Cow poo boot! No lightning, no storm, no photo’s, wet smelly foot. / Damned Bull LOL

As you might remember, for my birthday James gave me a trip to Tasmania, which makes me totally and utterly spoiled rotten. (and very happy, tee hee) So how does one have a Tasmanian Holiday? / Start by getting on the Spirit Of Tasmania. There was this crazy guy doing all the announcements and he kept giggling and then trailing off at the end of each one…. strange. / Have a “Final Destination Moment” on the way from the ship. If you don’t get that, you’re not cool enough. / Prepare for self portraits by testing all the furniture for it’s climbability… result? Low climbability options, proceed with care and a cup of tea. / Visit some cows, lots of cows. Black cows, spotty cows, even cows with flies on their ears. / Learn how to do landscape photography without even looking at what you are doing. James calls this “Landscape photography 101.” I call it silly. / Take embarrassing tourist photos of unwashed hair in front of a vaguely attractive looking landscape from a lookout that takes ages to get to and isn’t worth the effort. / Visit sheep… / Many sheep… It’s at about this point that I should confess that the highlight of my trip to Tasmania was sheep. I love sheep, and wool, and it was so sheepy and so woolly. ah, love the sheep…. baaaaaaa! / Stay in dodgy accommodation (not that it matters, we were sleepy by this point) / Have many many toilet stops. So James can take many embarrassing photos of said stops. / Eat awesome food and take Hien-style photos of the food while telling James he has to wait until I get a good shot. He was hungry. Sorry hon. / Take photos under fences of grass and pretty trees and stuff that I never take photos of. / Drive up and down nine mile beach until Jo chucks a tantrum and makes James go back to the first look out we saw and then insist it was another one and then realise she is wrong and chucks another tantrum. / Have RedBubble meet ups with the Tasmanian Locals. Of course in Tasmania, five minutes down the road is a ‘long distance’ so they might not consider themselves as local as we did. “Are you local?” (If you get that joke, I love you and you are a huge geek) / Stop several times and stay on the alert for “the tree” for many hours before James can swerve off the road to take a photo with power lines in it. / Find crazy camping grounds where they are obviously killing all their naughty visitors and warning off other naughty people by hanging their victims’ shoes out the front. / Be majorly big tourists and carry heavy cameras around busy markets and buy nice photography books which have nothing to do with Tasmania as souvenirs / What was that? Jo is into sheep and wool? Yes I actually dragged him into the wool centre so that I could touch and feel all the different types of wool and re-educate myself on the production process from sheep to suit. Um…. / Say hi to Rambo / James says that this was his ‘careful planning of schedules.’ I say it is technology dependency. / Have an unplanned and surprisingly good last stop to kill time before getting back on the ship. The guy who owned the place was going around offering to take people’s photos which we saw right through- he just wanted to play with people’s cameras. / This has nothing to do with Tasmania… James made me add it

Well, technically, Wax is an Animagus. He can turn into any animal as long as he has contact with its skin, feather, or fur, etc. That’s why he wears fur lined underwear. Patchwork fur made from hare, wolf, and rat. With some eagle and hummingbird feathers sewn in for variety. And there’s no stronger hair to sew it all up with than that from a unicorn’s mane (now extinct, of course). Wax is very very old, and the reason Celadore is now a monster hunter. But that’s a story for another day. For now, here’s a story for this day… In all its pencil glory once again.

Yellowstone Spring Babies / A.M. Ruttle / 6/09 The drama of Yellowstone plays out every day, but particularly in the spring when the babies of the season arrive. Bison calves cavort and nestle next to their moms to nap. When wolves start circling bison, other bison come running over to help. We watched recently as a group of cows and calves were able to keep some wolves at bay. Then moments later the wolves were over a small ridge, tails up and wagging, heads down and pointing inward toward something on the ground. There are so many biologists following the wolves of Yellowstone that we were able to overhear a walky-talky report that they might have found a still-born calf – there had been no tussle between wolves and bison, they had one minute been circling bison then moments later just magically came up with something that had their attention. The predators of the park are particularly focused on the babies in the spring, and so it’s always a bit of a “thank goodness moment” to see a healthy baby that is not being carried off. One such personally thrilling moment, was finding an elk cow in the high country, and noticing that she slowly wandered away from the spot where she had been grazing/browsing. Carefully approaching the area where she had been, we found a fuzzy rock… hmm, fuzzy rock?? No, it was an elk calf flattened to the ground, hidden in thick sage. I was able to creep slowly toward it while my family kept an eye out for the mom (or any grizzlies) to materialize. What a treasure of a moment, watching the fawn’s breathing carefully to make sure it wasn’t stressing. It’s instinct to lie still was so strong that I was able to approach within an inch of its muzzle and bend back some grass that was in the way of the photograph. / / A particularly poignant moose drama was playing out at Trout Lake this spring. A few days before our arrival, a cow moose had been attacked; some say it was wolves (note the slash on her throat), some say is was a grizzly. She survived the attack and within possibly another day she delivered a fine healthy moose calf. Imagine being torn up from an attack and having to watch out for a newborn! Those of us keeping an eye on her were dismayed to see the baby butting her lying down, as it was trying to nurse. Would she be able to rise so that the calf could suckle? / / Eventually she did rise and the calf was able to eagerly nurse. More of her wounds were visible when she stood up… on her shoulder, her right hip, and behind her right leg. She definitely gets Mom Of the Spring award from our family! Both mom and baby were doing well when we left Yellowstone. It’s possible that this mother has figured out what some bears have discovered… that near the roadsides can almost be a safer place to hang out with their babies… with all the people and sometimes throngs of cameras discouraging the predators.

Terrific news!! Some wonderful person just purchased 3 things from me, all in the shape of baby bulls…and I am thrilled, thank you so much!!! / / A matted print of Baby Bull Production Baby Bull Production is something I created not that long ago. It’s a mixed media piece on canvas textured paper……i did it in response to the chilled out cows at Mullumbimby, northern New South Wales, who seem to be very laid back, i suspect they are indulging in the ‘other’ kind of grass also……. they have this real chilled look about them, and I’ve never seen cows anywhere else that have this way about them. I put it in the Casino Art Exhibition and it was the only painting that sold, every year a male school teacher goes to that show, or so the legend goes…….and purchases a piece……it was my lucky year. Tonight I was asked if I’d ever sold a painting in a gallery…well, yes, and at exhibitions and privately. To date I believe I have sold between 30 and 40 original paintings, which I am very proud of…..in the early days 2002 I was very prolific, things have slowed down a bit with my painting now, because i am much more deliberate and take a lot of time to imbue my paintings with layers and love and depth…..it is just how i have grown as an artist, it is nice to report that there is growth along the journey…(and sales lol)!!! Somebody also has a print of these cows and loves them very much from what I understand lol You may recall/or not, that Baby Bull Production was featured in the “Griffith Review” University Publication… quite a few months ago I was honoured to be contacted by the Griffith REVIEW which is a publication of topical essays, memoirs and reports by some of the best writers and artists Australia has to offer, which is put out by Griffith University 4 times a year in the form of a book / A matted print of Moo Cow Sunrise Family Moo Cow Sunrise is usually over at my other Red Bubble Shop called Migaloomagic but I need to order a few things, and it saves me postage if I upload this design to my main portfolio. Many of you will have probably seen it before, if so, please don’t feel you need to comment. There is a lovely calendar available from my Migaloomagic store also full of bright beautiful happy kids images, just perfect for going back to school and keeping track of time :) / Baby Bull Production TShirt Thank you again :)
