This female Ornate cowfish (Arcana ornate) was lovely enough to pose front on for me on a recent dive under Flinder’s pier. She was eye balling me. It was just like she was waiting for the right moment to land a big kiss right on the front of my lens . The white striped markings across her face are my favorite aspect to this image.

I named this photo in honour of one of my underwater photography idols, David Doubilet. I have been a fan of his work ever since I got into underwater photography. He has released a book with the same name, which is a series of fish face portraits. I have it at home and it is one of my favs. So much character in this female Ornate cowfish (Arcana ornate).

I’ve been trying to get a good shot of one of these little beauties for ages, quite a task with a compact camera let me tell you. Anyhow on this dive I was determined and all my stalking and patience paid off when this fellow became accustomed to my presence somewhat instead of just bolting. / Aracana ornata , male. Flinders Pier.

This fish is so tiny and beautiful! It has blue and yellow dots / stripes all over its body, as well as armour on top of its body. When feeding, it blows a jet of water out of its mouth into the sediment to uncover hidden prey.
