In rehearsal for the Adelaide Fringe Parade. We were a group of flaggers (www. flagmania.org) who were formed for the Gay and Lesbian Pride March in 2005. The group has evolved and will march in the Gay and Lesbian Pride March for the opening night of Feast (gay and lesbian arts festival) in November this year. The Fringe opening parade was just an opportunity to keep the magic alive.

A view inside the beautiful cellar door at Jeannert Wines in the Clare Valley, South Australia. One of Jeanneret’s Shiraz wines is labeled ‘Cowboys n Indians’ and I tried to capture and present the essence of that wine and the wonderful atmosphere inside in this shot. You’ll see the Cowboy and Indian posters on the back wall. / See the location of Jeanneret Wines on Google Maps The host at Jeanneret, Clare is a lovely lady and you taste their beautiful wines over an aged barrel as the bar (shown in the bottom right) Thanks to the winemaker, Ben Jeanneret for buying a large framed print of this for his cellar.

My friend Randy has been blessed to make a living as a cowboy. A hobby that has turned into much more is reciting cowboy poetry at gatherings near and far. This poem is on his first album. I can almost hear his melodic voice now… Ridin’ / by Charles Badger Clark There is some that like the city – Grass that’s curried smooth and green, / Theaytres and stranglin’ collars, Wagons run by gasoline - / But for me it’s hawse and saddle Every day without a change, / And a desert sun a-blazin’ On a hundred miles of range. Just a-ridin’, a-ridin’ – Desert Ripplin’ in the sun, / Mountains blue along the skyline - / I don’t envy anyone When I’m ridin’. When my feet is in the stirrups And my hawse is on the bust, / With his hoofs a-flashin’ lightnin’ From a cloud of golden dust, / And the bawlin’ of the cattle Is a-comin’ down the wind / Then a finer life than ridin’ Would be mighty hard to find. Just a-ridin’, a-ridin’ Splittin’ long cracks through the air, / Stirrin’ up a baby cyclone, Rippin’ up the prickly pear / As I’m ridin’. / / I don’t need no art exhibits When the sunset does her best, / Paintin’ everlastin’ glory On the mountains to the west / And your opery looks foolist When the night-bird starts his tune / And the desert’s silver mounted By the touches of the moon. Just a-ridin’, a-ridin’, Who kin envy kings and czars / When the coyotes down the valley Are a-singin’ to the stars, / If he’s ridin’? When my earthly trail is ended And my final bacon curled / And the last great roundup’s finished At the Home Ranch of the world / I don’t want no harps nor haloes, Robes nor other dressed up things - / Let me ride the starry ranges On a pinto hawse with wings! Just a-ridin’, a-ridin’- Nothin’ I’d like half so well / As a-rounin’ up the sinners That have wandered out of Hell, / And a-ridin’.

It was half rain, half snow as I was taking the picture so it was not hard to imagine the hardships of being on the trail driving that wagon. One can see the weary cowboys relief when this wagon came in sight after a long day in the saddle. Located on Highway 14, Alberta. / Charles Goodnight is credited with inventing the chuck wagon. In 1866 he and his partner, Oliver Loving, made preparations to take a herd of 2,000 longhorn cattle from near Fort Belknap in northern Texas, to Denver. Goodnight purchased a government wagon and had it completely rebuilt according to his specifications in seasoned bois d’arc, the toughest wood available. / The distinguishing feature of the wagon was the sloping box on the rear with hinged lid that lowered to become a cook’s worktable. The box was fitted to the width of the wagon and contained shelves and drawers for holding food and utensils. To the cowboys, “chuck” was food, so the box was called a chuck box and the wagon became known as a chuck wagon. / Goodnight’s early prototype of the chuck wagon was copied widely and changed little in the years to follow. / Most chuck wagons had the same basic design. They were large, sturdy, four-wheeled wagons with bows across the top covered with waterproof sheets. There was usually a cowhide stretched beneath the wagon bed and fastened at the corners; it was used to carry wood or cow chips. In the front of some of the wagons was a jockey box, which was used for storing tools and heavier equipment needed on the trail. Back in 2000… my husband and I were invited by the Governor of South Dakota to join him in the Annual Buffalo Roundup. 100 people from all over the world are selected each year and personally invited to ride for 4 days in the hills and plains of the Black Hills of South Dakota and round up over 2000 head of American Bison. There are two herds and they had to be brought together then driven to the holding pens some 35 miles from our start point. / Once there… the herds were inoculated against “Bursalousis”...a virus that has a horrible death and can be passed to cattle. The herd is also culled for injured and calves to be sold to private buyers. I know many of my watchers have seen the other postings I have of this “once in a lifetime adventure” and here are a few more captures that I gathered together so you could continue to see just what a monumental journey this was. / This is my husband Russ (Big Swede) on the biggest horse they could find (a Belgian) at the main National Park ranch. Russ is 6’6” and a normal horse looks like a pony when he sets the saddle. The State of South Dakota used this image for several years in their tourism literature. / Stay tuned for more of the Buffalo Roundup…to be continued… Ridin’ Drag / It was quite the accomplishment to be on horseback and capture the massive animals that are our American Bison. / Thundering Icons / This was just one half of the herd…we would meet up the next day with the other half…a very dangerous time when the Bulls of two different herds share the prairie. / Stressing The Limit / There is a 25 foot grace you must keep between your horse and the outside line of the herd of buffalo…Bison hate horses more then they do humans. /

How the west was won. An old shoot I got to have with my fiancé and two amazing friends of ours a while back. Thanks to Lucky Jo for modelling and to James for the lighting setup and general all round fun.
This Mexican Cowboy (El Vaquero) was part of an extremely talented Mexican Rodeo show and I was honored that he posed for this portrait. I loved the intense expression and traditional clothing coupled with the angle of the shot as he sat on horseback. Canon EOS 5D MkII, EF70-200 f/2.8L IS USM lens, 80mm @ f/4.5 1/160 sec. A joint effort by my photographer friend, Mike, and myself. Mike’s image of a patron in an old west saloon, with post processing by myself. / He shot this with his Nikon D100 and Nikkor 70-200mm lens. / Quick timing, Mike, he was walking past the door and your timing was superb!
