Oil on canvas
Cowboy portrait
A cowboy a long way from the prairie, in the New York Library
When competing in the game of Team Penning. The 3 riders have to work as a team to get the job done. They have under 2 minutes to sort 3 cows out of 30 and drive them to the other side of the arena and into a pen for time. Its a thrill!
This is a print I carved based on a game called Cowboy mounted shooting. It is a timed event where riders have a course to ride while shooting and hitting certain targets. You gets points deducted for targets missed. / her is man and a woman going full force to get their fastest time.
This is what the connection between horse and cow is in the cutting horse competition, The Dance. Its truly accurate. They connect eye to eye and float around the arena.
acrylic on canvas, 40” x 30”, www.jimlivelyart.com
Outline in 4 colours. Created by hand sketching and using path tool in GIMP. Then using transpanency selection and layers to recolour original black outline in red, blue, yellow. Finally shift each of the 4 layers slightly, then a bit of dodging, erasing, airbrushing etc to finish off. Used fuzzy edges on tools at this stage.
I am the subject of CMAN’s illustration of one of my self photos.
original painting is acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas and part of the Non-Conformist, The Grey Series of paintings. Humorous piece as the cowboy and his dog discover, they really do have something in common with Pop Art. www.jimlivelyart.com

Just my chaps. Nothing special. Matches my gun leather.
I love the covers of old pulp magazines. Bold clashy colours, licks of highlight, action poses, massive close-ups. So good.

Action cowboy at Merbein Rodeo 2009
He was changing his shirt and sneakers for boots when I saw him. I asked why he was changing here and he said he liked to be with himself before he rode. I said are you sure you just aren’t making nice with the bulls and he smiled. I asked if he minded if I sat down and he nodded no. I sat down with my back against the wall and raised my camera up as if to ask if I could take photos and he shrugged. I asked when did he know he wanted to rodeo and he said as long as I can remember. How old did you think you were and he thought for a moment and said two. That is when I took this photo. Did you always want to ride bull and ne nodded his head. He has had 14 broken bones, a spleen injury and when I asked how long are you going to keep this up he said as long as I can, I don’t know anything else but farming. Farm Show Harrisburg,pa
