  • I ka moana Ka moana hou honu Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved Pa`ako Beach wave action at sunset on the south coast of Makena Maui Hawai’i / View of Kanaloa, also known as Kaho`olawe Island on the horizon in the distance. Also known as Pa’ako Beach, Makena Secret Cove and Wedding Beach. It is a lovely secluded beach favourited for hosting small wedding ceremonies. It is most importantly a protected area favoured by the locals for relaxing and enjoy the evening with the children while swimming and net fishing in the shallow crystal clear tide pools among the lava rocks, snorkeling and deep sea fishing. Many paddle out in their canoes to drop their lines in the ocean. ~ Hawaiian Chant ~ E ala e. Ka lai i ka hikina. / Awake, the sun is in the east. / I ka moana, ka moana hou honu. / At the ocean, the deep ocean. / Pi`i ka lewa ka, lewa nu`u. / Climb to the heavens, highest heaven. / I ka hikina ae a kala. E ala e. / In the east, there is the sun, arise, awake. by Keali’i Reichel Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

  • Photographing an iconic landmark is never easy, often because it’s all been seen before. One thing that does change though is wind and tide, light and dark, rain and sun. Light is our constant variable, always adding interest, always pleasing the eye, for it changes our view of the familiar. Sydney Harbour Bridge is seen here at near water line from The Rocks.

  • Kaula’uo / Ulua / Mokapu Beach / Wailea / Maui Gold Coast / Hawai’i Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved This image is the result of an experiment in light and camera settings as I was trying to reproduce the atmospheric conditions of the moment. You may see my camera data below. Please let me know what you really think of it. These two beaches are accessible by the same path along the wonderful elevated boardwalk, although they have different names for each side of the beach. When you are facing makai, the ocean, to the right is Mokapu Beach, which lies just in front of the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort and to the left is Ulua Beach. These beaches are very popular places for walking, running, sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling, featuring sandy bottoms. In summer the water is wonderfully warm. It is a beautiful long stretch of golden sand, and the luxurious bronzed golden sand is reflecting the beautiful warm colours of sunset in this image. It was a peaceful evening on Maui’s Gold Coast. Ulua is name after the adult Crevalle fish. The Ulua fish is also known as Pompano. When the fish is less than 10 pounds, it is called Papio. The Ulua fish may be caught with a rod and reel from the shoreline and is considered one of the most sought after inshore fishes on the islands. It is delicious when breaded with a light seasoned flour and grilled or lightly sauteed with fresh lemon butter and dill weed. The original name of this lovely beach was Ke One Ulua (pronounced o-ney) / Like Polo Beach, Ulua is a name unfamiliar to Kanaka Maoli (Indigenous Hawaiians) and Kama’aina (long time residents) on Maui. The original name was Kaula’uo and that is what I prefer to call it as I believe the original name should be restored. • On the Whispering Sea Pa’ako Beach / Twilight Makena Maui Hawai’i “To possess good intuition, goodly power, causes work. / It causes work firstly in the watching and comprehending of negative forces and imbalances both inward and outward. / Secondly, it causes striving in the gathering up of will in order to do something about what one sees, be it for good, or balance, or to allow something to die. I will not lie to you; it is easier to throw away the light and go to sleep. For with it, we clearly see all sides of ourselves and others, both the disfigured and the divine and all conditions in between. Yet, with this light the miracles of deep beauty in the world and in humans come to consciousness. With this penetrating light one can see past the bad action to the good heart, one can espy the sweet spirit crushed beneath hatred, one can understand much instead of being perplexed only. This light can differentiate layers of personality, intention, and motives in others. / It can determine consciousness and unconsciousness in self and others. / It is the wand of knowing. / It is the mirror in which all things are sensed. / It is the deep wild nature.” / From The Retrieval of Intuition as Initiation ~ Women Who Run With Wolves Featured Art 20 August 2009 / A Place To Call Home / I ke kai Hawanawana ~ Eia ku’u lei Aloha Pa’ako Beach / Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / My images do not belong to the public domain. • Poldhu cove in cornwall

  • Dirty, grainy – this little cove of mischief will never scrub up…

  • This image was captured at Camp Vermilion, in Cook, MN. On the edge of the majestic Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA), this rustic Bible Camp has helped children experience the love of God for over 50 years. It has also inspired many adults, including myself! It was working here as a camp counselor that I met my beautiful wife, Rachel, and it was here beneath the towering pines that God renewed my faith. This photograph highlights a voyageur canoe, sheltered by the camp’s rugged old boathouse. In this photograph I hoped to convey the excitement of exploration, and the gentle rest that shelters the soul.

Taken on a beautiful summer day, this photograph highlights the beams of an old boathouse. Used to shelter the camp’s voyageur canoes from pounding waves and thunderous storms, this structure is a literal sanctuary. By sheltering these canoes, these rugged rafters have also sheltered the faith of all those who dared to discover the love of Christ in God’s great north woods.

  • North-West Cove is a tiny fishing community on the Aspotogan Peninsula of Nova Scotia, Canada. About 35 miles or so from Halifax on Route 3 or 103 will get you to the turn-off which follows the seacoast around the peninsula and where you’ll find many quiet and beautiful spots like this one. The home is complete with a pair of workshops and/or fishing sheds built at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, very convenient for mooring a fishing boat and loading or unloading. This photo was taken Oct.5,2005, as the autumn foliage was coming into full beauty. / Sony DSCF828 camera. /
