/ Firstly thank you for the enormous support and discussion this picture has facilitated. Secondly, thank you RB for putting it on the home page. Thirdly, it previously has not been for slae but now is. Why? Because the proceeds go to charity. The charity that believes in reinstating people’s health, spirit and soul against all odds. The charity that supports this woman and thousands like her, in a war torn brutal country.- healafrica.org / I can’t think of a better reason to purchase it. xx

Pulling up my driveway I noticed a little note on my front door from the Post Office. I quickly grabbed the note, reversed out and drove down the road to collect whatever was waiting for me at the other end. I had no idea what it could be! Then, to my surprise it was the long awaited publication Compassion, Courage & Friendship! Excitedly, I carefully opened the folded cardboard and pulled out the shrink wrapped book. After removing the plastic, I pulled the book out from the dust-cover and stared at the front cover. It was stunning. What hit me first was the fantastic composition of the images, merged onto the matte print front cover, with the beautiful sweeping yellow hues. As I opened the book I smelt that sweet aroma of the fresh print. I quickly flicked through the 77 lush pages. In that quick skim, I noticed contrasting black and whites, deep poems and stories and beautiful artworks adorned by colour. I knew I was in for some great book reading. Before settling in with a nice cup of mocha, I recharged my camera and decided to share my finds ‘as I go’ with the Redbubble community. I ventured into the backyard, to soak up the last few moments of the sun hitting the foliage. As I studied the pages more closely, I noticed the 2 types of unique typography that bestowed the titles. I was really impressed by how much care had gone into the layout and crop areas. As a self-taught website/poster designer, I know how difficult this can be with multiple size and colour images. After taking multiple photos, I decided it was time to put the camera to rest and give this publication the attention it deserves, with what little sunlight I had left. Overall, this fantastic ‘coffee-table’ publication is a definite keeper. It is beautifully crafted, displays a large variety of imagery, stories and poems from many artists and will lead people back to the amazing website that compiled this compassionate, courageous and friendly piece of ‘art’. You can pick up your copy when it goes on sale this coming THURSDAY. Don’t miss out!

RedBubble claims to be an open and inclusive website where you can share your creative genius with the world, but with the new RedBubble book publication ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, it might leave people wondering where this creative genius got to in this instance. Mind you, the only people left wondering will be the people that haven’t got their grubby little hands on ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, everyone else will be enthralled as they flip the pages and allow themselves to be reduced to tears, anger, laughter, smiles, and deep thought time and time again. At first sight, ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’ seems like the perfect collectors item. A perfect square measuring 21.5 cm in all directions, and the spine labelled with the source and title, it would seem that the exterior design was thought through for the avid book collector. It’s not only bright and airy, but the aesthetics of the cover make you feel at ease and loved. Now sitting on the train and heading to college, I manage to be publicly seduced and buckle to the passionate gestures of ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’. The exquisite craftsmanship continues, with each captivating image and inspiring literature, matching perfectly to tell a story that might otherwise be lost. Someone made an effort and it certainly shows. The typeface has also been perfectly selected to match the theme and only add to the experience, it isn’t distracting and I don’t have to squint or learn another language to read it. Sure there are plenty of thought provoking images to immerse yourself in, but I say it once again, the literature that accompanies is a match made in heaven. Don’t take my word for it though, because as I sit here on a peak hour train critiquing ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, it seems I have some new-found friends reading along with me. The IT guy to my left, the somewhat hungover looking blondie to my right, and the people I can’t see but can feel breathing on my neck behind me (I know you’re there). I do have one hang up though, and it could be one of personal preference, but I was disappointed that the links to each artist where at the back of ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, as opposed to being directly beneath the featured art or literature piece. It might sound picky, but as a matter of convenience, it would allow the reader to more freely access their favorite artist or writer and go view their other works online. The works from the RedBubble community collected in this book illuminate the power of Compassion, Courage, and Friendship. They show us that when we go beyond our fears and truly see someone different to us, we look at something that can set us free. In concluding this review, I asked Sandra Iov, a fellow photography student to critique two images in ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, and here are her two favorites and an explanation of why: I Dreamt Of An Angel II by chrisdade “I like the contrast between the straight lines and the sharpness of the surroundings in comparison to the softness of the skin and shadows of the boys. I like the idea that although they may be perceived as homosexuals, it plays against the idea of their sin with the angel wings. It says what they do is not a sin.” – Sandra Brothers by Jinx “The older boy is keeping the younger brother safe from the darkness in the background. The bridge leads to the unknown and they look like they’re about to take that journey together. The contrast between the light on the boys and that of the forest is powerful.” – Sandra

/ / / / / Having seen the entries accumulate in this challenge, I did not envy the judges who compiled Redbubble’s latest book Compassion Courage & Friendship, but they have risen to the task! / The book is a beautifully compiled mixture of photographs, drawings and writing – which all combined to make you laugh and cry, remember and think. / / It covers so many facets of the human condition – joy, love, helplessness, despair and hope and is so perfectly balanced that no one emotion overwhelms you. / Pieces of writing that paint pictures in your mind tell stories of offering hope in despair, resilience in the face of neglect and compassion which rises above apathy and egocentricity. / Pictures telling more than the thousand words they’re always credited with – a touch of a mother’s skin communicating more than our language will allow, eyes that cannot speak of horrors they’ve seen and images of friendships that will endure forever. / / I know I will be giving a copy of this book to my best friend for Christmas – but if you want to do that you’ll need to buy two copies, (the word on the street is that it will go on sale this week) because I guarantee this is one you will want to keep for yourself.

Here’s the video i promised i’d do / to review the Compassion Courage and Friendship book / on Youtube / Words just weren’t enough, so i thought this might be better able to convey the deeply moving emotion of this extraordinary RB publication

I’ve had a copy of Compassion, Courage and Friendship (seen here for size comparison), sitting on my desk for a couple of days now. I’ve been trying to work out how best to review it. To be honest, when somebody sends you something free it’s really hard to get past the joy of that and see to the heart of the matter.. but as this is a review that might help people decide whether to buy this book or not, I need to be as unbiased and honest as I can. And so I put on my critical pants. For starters, the packaging is really nice. It’s got its own little box that the book sits in so if you’re like me you spend an extra few seconds trying to work out how it opens before you realise. The book itself is on great stock, the cover in that semi-gloss you want to rub your face against and the pages slightly thicker than, say, Black and White magazine. It also smells like rainbows and tastes like goodness. Sorry, just trying to get the sycophancy out of my system. Unicorns! Opening it up, I was really pleased to see there was actually non-photographic work in there. I was expecting something like a photo book, with a single token painting, a couple of stories and maybe one photoshop job, but I have to take my invisible hat off to Natalie Perkins, Glen Smith, Anne van Alkemade, Julie Langford and Christopher Barker for the variety and quality of the work in here. For all that I’m obsessed with fonts and gsm, the work is clearly the star of the book, and each piece singularly is wonderful. Of course you can’t put two images (or an image and a story) next to each other and expect one won’t alter the other, they’re like colours, changing their nature depending on how you shuffle them. In this case the work really compliments it’s neighbour, and you can tell Jo O’Brien and Hop Dac spent many a night poring over the content, placing and replacing them like an elaborate painting with infinite solutions. Also, I like to imagine them wearing blonde wigs and sword fighting with umbrellas. While we’re visualising. I feel like I’d be letting people down by not having a negative, so I’m going to mention fonts. Mainly the fonts are fine, I really like the style, but I think if you’re going to have a font that mimics handwriting, you might as well grab a pen and just write it yourself. You need that variation in characters, rather than every “a” looking exactly the same.. and if you don’t have the time or pens to write them all out, at least don’t choose an “i” with something as distinctive as a heart over it. The first time I noticed it I thought “Oh look, a tiny heart”, but by the end of the book every little heart caused by own to skip. I’m really not a fan of that. I guess in the end what I need to ask myself is “Would I buy the book?”. Yes, I would buy it, I would certainly give it as a gift to loved ones, or post it to a stranger or lay it on the ground and dance around it. In a word, it’s professional. From a website where anybody can play if they bring their own ball that is a wonderful thing. It makes me both want to buy and be part of future books. Just vary the characters a little next time.

Hi!! It’s been a great week, getting wedded and having people purchased my works, I have lots of reasons to smile these days :D Firstly, I’m pleased to share with you that one of my work was selected to be part of the Compassion Courage Friendship book published by Redbubble :D I’m also very happy to receive the $100 RB voucher too….I take it as a wedding gift from RB,haha! :D I’ve also started a button collection with these buttons I have purchased from zazzle. Some of these designs are also from our fellow bubblers, can you tell which ones? :D I made some 10 sales at zazzle over the last 1 week plus at zazzle, thanks to the many on going promotions that are going on at zazzle :D These are some of the items I sold:

Over the last two weeks I’ve been browsing an early version of the internet – the book. The publication in question is Courage Compassion and Friendship which is one of the growing collection of Redbubble books. I’ve decided to write a few words after a while with it – pictures you will see in other reviews I won’t go on much about the physicality of the book suffice to say it comes in a beautiful dustcover/pocket with a wonderful inspiring design that’s also reflected on the cover of the book itself. The book is a square format and is well made to last for the ages. One of the great joys of Compassion Courage and Friendship is the way you can just dive into any page and see consistently great work in both visual and written form. The balance of writing and images is just so – allowing you to seamlessly experience both in the turn of a few pages. Now I’m going to highlight a few works not because they are my favourites. I decided to open a few pages at random and highlight the work that I found as a fair way for you to get an idea of what you can expect. Worth is a short written piece that beautifully conveys the heartbreaking reality of some situations in this world – where you find that all the compassion you can give can’t stop the progress of heartbreak. / I dreamt of an Angel II is an amazing image that conveys the hope of those praying for heavenly compassion and the hope of those whose aim is to give it. The scene is lit by the white light of a window giving a great sense of a calm and enlightening future path. / Gone fishing is an image that would define a faithful friendship – two people sharing the one physical space for a day. I suspect sometimes they’d talk to each other but most of the time they just draw comfort from each others presence. / Vera was a written piece that my mother first commented on when she read the book. She knew the scene ,story and character described was based in reality since the nuances writing struck a chord with her life experiences – making the story all the more powerful. / One is a simple, yet perfectly composed, image which deceives. After looking at it a while questions drift into your mind: Will they live together forever? Can they feel each other even when apart? Will the caring get stronger still? You could search for all this work on the Bubble and eventually find it but with Courage Compassion and Friendship you’ll find it and all the emotion that it contains in one heart wrenching place. I recommend buying a copy to nourish your soul.

11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – We will remember them! – What’s that? With the 11th of the 11th coming around – and 90 years of remembering the worst war, the great war, the war to end all wars, the horrendous war, the first world war, I felt compelled to create a remembrance of my own. At the end are links to my relevant art & writing to help me, at this time, remember those I know who sacrificed all for this future of peace. And then there was this a journal entry by the wonderful Ms Sharon Perrett and I realised that I wonder where the honour has gone. It clarified for me that we have all become a nation of lazy soft selfish namby pambys and I wonder if the boys who went on their “Great Adventure” in 1914-17 or 1939-45 and forced to go to Vietnam had been the same before they went. I highly doubt it! This was my comment to that journal : / [I have added & embellished on a few points here] WAR – BAAAH!!! / but we MUST remember and thank them / We must honour their sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy now Perhaps this freedom is not the life we should have been leading, perhaps the fight they fought was wrong – we do not commemorate the fight but the fact that they believed enough in a cause to go and fight and fight to the death for what they believed was right! In this day there is not one westerner under the age of 35 who completely understands that let alone upholds that fundamental decency & courageous honour. Its as if for the last 35 years we have been pampering our people with peace! Our youth need to learn these lessons: / Courage is not being fearless, – courage is doing what has to be done, even if it scares the living daylights out of you! / Being an adult is not a number or having assets, being an adult is doing what has to be done even if you don’t want to do it! Remember the boys who died in war were only just adults in age but old men in courage! The boys now days of the same age enmass will never have the same courage … In one way it is good – war on such a world scale will never happen again – there will never be the man power to support it ! Our youth psyche is – “Leave it alone long enough and someone else will do it for you!” ... / But then when the power stops and the oil stops and the food stops I guarantee they will be the first to scream outrageously in complaint of rights being destroyed !!! The youth of today need to know that there is only 4 fundamental rights – / 1/ safety [not to be abused or demoralized (or discriminated against) ] / 2/ sustenance [food & clean water] / 3/ shelter & health [ a roof over their head walls windows and a door to keep out the elements & the unsavory – and assistance when ill injured or vulnerable] / 4/ occupation [something to do to be positively productive communally accepted and valid] / with an overall acceptance for Love. / Everything else is a luxury! When I was a girl my first story I ever read alone was “The Little Red Hen” / Every teenager should do a book analysis on it! – Then perhaps such disgraceful insulting behaviour will cease! Thank you for letting me rave on a bit! / But then that was why those men fought – to give me the freedom to rave on at will! / I am eternally grateful! Are you? / I teach my children to be so also. Do you? Lest We Forget! ♥ Relevant articles I have created to commemorate those I remember 11:11/11/11/08 : / / Dad’s March / Uncle Alf’s WW1 ANZAC Writings / Soldier Boy [borrowed from bjboo ] / My Dad / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM / Silence of Peace

Two amazing events occurred this month. The first was my adorable grandson Gabriel attending school for the first time. Such a momentous occasion for a child and indeed his/her parents, not to mention me, his Nana Dee Dee. I made a special trip, just so I could be there when he finished his first day. So, with smarties and a racing car in tow I made his day, and he made mine when later that night he took his car to bed with him… :-) And the second was… sorry to keep you waiting… ;) / I finally stepped into my genius and became self-employed!!! A momentous occasion for me I have to say. However, I decided that I would do well to practice what I preach… So having taken my courage in both hands, I grabbed the bull by the balls (or should that be horns… both a little Freudian I believe) and dived in so to speak! My insanity intact but on hold until further notice… ;) My wonderful and most compelling and captivating work is now available for sale via Redbubble, should you wish your dwelling place to become enchanted by the presence of my essence… I am also available for commissions and currently hold the originals should you wish to purchase them. Please feel free to contact me by bmail with this in mind. / Thankyou kindly for your continued interest and support, I appreciate it immensely… Much love Delphine de Noire aka Medusa x
