  • This woman is a victim of a seemingly never ending war in southern congo. She has suffered sexual violence (rape) so severe it has rendered her incontinent. She now exists purely as a result of a courageous charity called Heal Africa, and indeed her own inner strength and faith. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she stood up (which must have been painful), straightened her back and stared straight down the lens. No stopping to straighten her scarf, no preening, no fear. Just an honesty so raw, so uninhibited and so rare, I caught my breath and thought I’d never breath again. I was totally overpowered by her intensity. After I took the shot and showed it to her she smiled and thanked me. It still gives me a shiver to look at it now. HEAL Africa calendar available now!!! • This is a compilation I have done with Rebecca Zachariah after our trip to Rwanda. In a nation of shattered souls post genocide, hope remains in the form of new life. These people have witnessed death on massive scale. You can see how precious they consider life from this shot. ALL PROCEEDS TO HEAL AFRICA HEAL Africa calendar available now!!! Dangerous It is that feeling in her eyes / As she moves towards revolution / Her poise, her presence / She holds herself defiant and courageous / A warrior of the heart. / / Her heart exposed / Vulnerable like a delicate reed / Glistening and subtle, a pearl / But so easily turned raw. / / She bends but not breaks / Missing the arrows of war / and marches forward towards / the rupture of change. / / Through the wind and hail / A tornado of emotion / Her heart in flames / Her dance ignited by passion. / / Her thinking heart / She has been told / Thinks too much / But she is aware, her eyes see / and her heart knows. / / Instinct and passion / Softness and Strength / Intuition and Wisdom / a powerful marriage. / / It takes a strong man to love her / One who can see her soul / for as strong as she is / She is just as soft / And she knows and he knows / In this she is dangerous. • In Ode, Intimations of Immortality from Reflections of Early Childhood, William Wordswoth wrote: Though nothing can bring back the hour / Of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower / We will grieve not, but rather find / Strength in what remains behind. I was reminded of those lines when I saw a single blade of grass that had gone to seed and was blooming deep in the woods. The tiny flowers were a sight to behold.

  • Mark, an American soldier, gave his life for his fellow countrymen in the war in Iraq. The only one of his unit to survive the initial blast, he battled for life as he was flown back to the United States for medical care. His family flocked to his side and surrounded him with love in his final hours. Not long after his arrival in America, he died on home soil in the arms of his loved ones. His mother Kim, my husband’s first cousin, wrote this poem, “Is it you?” as she struggled with grief and loneliness for her young son. She asked me if I had a dragonfly photo to accompany her poem which relates the tale of the dragonflies that seem to hover near her in a show of consolation. This image is our collaboration, our joint effort, in memory of Mark Graham who defended the cause of freedom with steadfast determination and a valiant heart. May he rest in peace and may the angels surround him and his family now and forever. (100% of proceeds from sales will go to the Mark W. Graham Foundation; see another image, “Is it you?” in this portfolio if you’d like a green dragonfly. It will print better in the card size). Taken from the Mark W. Graham Foundation website, here is additional information about the foundation to which all funds from the sales of these images will be donated: “The Mark W. Graham Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides support for young people of character and military families in crisis. It honors the legacy of Mark Graham, a fallen soldier whose strength of character and gift of service to his country are an inspiration to all who knew him. Mark was a Lafayette, La., native and his death opened the community’s eyes to the reality of war and the sacrifice soldiers make in their fight to keep our country free. He was married to Stephanie for a little more than a year when he died. Mark was 22 years old.”

  • I thought I’d found a reason to live / Just like before when I was a child / Only to find that dreams made of sand / Would just fall apart and slip through my hands / But the spirit of life keeps us strong / And the spirit of life is the will to carry on / Adversity what have I done to you / To cause this reclusive silence / That has come between me and you / And the spirit of life oh-ho remains in light / And the spirit of life oh-ho remains inside / I never thought it would be quite like this / Living outside of mutual bliss / But as long as the veins in our arms still stand up / The spirit of life will keep living on / ‘dead can dance’

  • This elderly woman sits at the window and contemplates the world outside. She does not see far beyond the window frame because her world has diminished considerably. Two years ago she was officially diagnosed with dementia after a life threatening surgery and long hospital stay. However, her family and friends noticed a difference in her personality over the last several years. Once a proud and hard working single mom, she raised two children during the 60’s and 70’s at a time when single parenthood was not as widely accepted as it is today. At present, she is reduced to little more than the passive demeanor of a quiet child. She is aware of the reduction in both her mental and physical abilities. She also understands that she is helpless to change anything. / It takes great courage to face the inevitable. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia; it accounts for 64 per cent of all dementias. For example right now in the US, Alzeihmer’s has surpassed diabetes and is the sixth leading cause of death. As baby boomers are rapidly approaching the age of retirement it is believed that 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s in their lifetime. Currently, there are more than 24 million people in the world with dementia—this is estimated to rise to 81 million by the year 2040.6 / Statistics taken from both the Canadian and American Alzeihmer’s Society. / Published by Redbubble in Compassion, Courage and Friendship book October 2008 / Compassion, Courage & Friendship Top Ten in the Mood & Ambience, The Seated Human challenge, July 2009 / Featured in the Nirvana group October 2008 / Featured in the ImageWriting group November 2008 / Featured in the RB Buyer’s Booth November 2008 / Featured in the Stillness Speaks group November 2008 / Featured on RB homepage on November 25/08 / The Fine Art of Photography

  • Oh man… It took me forever to get this one to the point where I would submit it here to RedBubble, haha. Anyway, it’s loosely based off of a tattoo design I drew up a while back. I was wanting “Strong and Courageous” in Latin across the banner, but the translators I found online came up with “Validus quod Fortis” which means “Mighty and Strong.” But it works well enough for me ;) Hope you guys like it!

  • For me, boxing is a reflection on how we handle ourselves in everyday life. A fighter can only advance by scoring points if he has faith in himself. At any point when a boxer attacks he leaves himself open to a counter-attack. He can stand with a rock solid defense and be safe or he can attack and risk an opening for a counter attack. / As in the ring, we must have faith, take a risk, trust our training/instinct and believe in ourselves. /

  • Naked
    by JaneSolomon

I am naked now / Stripped of all self confidence / Nothing left to lose / There is no more heart to bruise / There is nothing left to take / ...

This was not an easy one to write. I write this from personal experience. I write it for all those who have lived through domestic violence or who have lost a friend or a loved one in this way or who are currently living with physical and/or mental abuse. They often go hand-in-hand. It starts subtly and is always followed by profuse apologies and usually escalates from there. Mental cruelty has many ugly faces too and is part of a control mechanism which is designed to reduce you to ashes by always making you feel inadequate and bad about yourself. Do not allow it. Furthermore, if someone is jealous of you it does not mean that they love you but quite the opposite. If they are always going out of their way to try and make you jealous of them, that is not love. When someone truly loves you they will edify you and your spirit, not taunt you or continually drag you down. They will never play games with you or your emotions if they love you. Recognize it when it happens and never let it get further than that. Get away. Get out before it crushes you. There is absolutely no excuse for physical or mental cruelty, abuse or violence. If you are dealing with someone who plays mind-games then you are dealing with the utmost immaturity. You only stay because you have a low self-esteem and you believe that you do not deserve any better. Do not delude yourself into thinking that you can ‘fix’ them or hope that it will all change because it won’t. You can never ‘fix’ someone else as that is a choice that only they alone can make, or not make. Have the strength to walk away and drag your self-respect behind you if you have to. Never play into the hands of being a victim. Take responsibility for your own life and your own future. Seek counseling and do whatever it takes to become a whole person. Always remember that two half people never make a whole person. You will recover; you will love and be loved again. Learn to love yourself and live to tell the story. This is your LIFE. This is your journey. Make it a beautiful one. You know that you can. When you open your mind / To the miracle that is you / You will find a deep well / Waiting there for you / When you open your heart / To the beauty that is you / You will sing a healing song / Of the love within you © JaneSolomon 2009 Music
