  • Location: / Boughton, Kent, England Map: / Google Maps Date and Time: / 12 April 2008, 11.25 a.m. Camera details: / ISO 200 : f/9 : 1/250 second : 18mm : Nikon D40 : Nikon 18-55mm lens Shot narrative: / This field caught my eye as i’d just pulled off the M2 motorway for Canterbury. Fortunately there was a bus stop in the layby (see map above) that I could pull in to and stood up on the door frame of the car to see over the fence. Fortunately the clouds were just right as I was driving past.

  • Taken a few miles east of Leicester, near Allexton. Its that time in the UK, just before the wheat gets harvested – heavy heads beginning to nod gently under the weight of the grain, and the weather unable to decide whether it is summer or not, threatening to flatten the crop, just it is ready. Leicestershire is full of distant horizons like this, and the Barley is all but in now, much of the ground already having been put under the plough in readiness for the next crop.

  • Crested Butte is the wildflower capital of Colorado…and it is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! These beautiful blue lupines set off the mountain landscape just perfectly! Please check out my calendar – WILD ABOUT WILDFLOWERS

This image was taken at the same time and place as Morning but is slightly different in perspective and it does show a bit more of the road (for a current challenge). Taken on top of Blue Knob Mountain in Claysburg, PA with the Nikon D40x, using the 18-135mm lens on 9/20/08. Other than cloning off some dew drops, it’s pretty much as is from the camera.

  • 3200 ISO is a brave new world for me. As a self confessed low ISO junkie, one who used Ektar 25 film whenever and wherever he could for many years because I wanted tight grain, the tighter the better, I would pull out all the stops I could to use that amazing ISO 25 film! For sure I’d never gone above ISO 1000 and then only to shoot indoor sporting events. Low ISO was(?) a hang-up for me! But I wanted to try astral photography and high ISO can get you there! However as we all know high ISO leads to increased noise which is something fairly new to me. You can use software and Photoshop plugins but I’ve been considering, one way to control noise would be to minimize or eliminate it by keeping the ISO as low as possible and that’s one way I‘m leaning. So in that regard it looks like a fast 50 prime is in order! It’s fun to be experimenting and learning, eh! Camera Model Canon EOS 50D / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 30 / Av( Aperture Value ) 3.5 / ISO Speed 3200 / Focal Length 18.0mm / Flash at 1/16 power and about 12 or 13 paper towels for diffusion. “One Night Under the Milky Way” was shot at Flamber Head on Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail For more information please visit Brian’s Homepage or on Flickr

  • Just a simple forest scene on a foggy August morning, knowing that the fog will be rolling in, is good inspiration to be up, and out early. I really enjoy the simplicity, and the beauty of nature. / August 2009 -

  • Featured in Best From Around the Barnyard September 12, 2009. / Featured in Image Writing (2/24) September 12, 2009. / Featured in ! #1 Artists of Redbubble! September 8, 2009. Best on Full Size A summer cornfield along Route 869 between Osterburg and Pavia, Pennsylvania. This image is actually fairly deceptive. I spent a lot of time working on a b&w sky and doing sc on the world below in order to create a somewhat threatening summer thunderstorm image. It fit as the world you see here, all sunny and golden, is actually thanks to the texture I eventually chose. In all reality, just as I took my last shot and headed back to the car big giant ploppy drops of rain began to fall … and those pretty clouds you see there Opened Up!!! LOL Image taken August 8, 2008 with the Nikon D40x and the 18-135mm Nikon lens. I was inspired by a beautiful image from Svetlana Sewel called Road To … to resurrect this one from the pile and play a bit. It was treated with HDR in Photomatix from 5 images, all from a single handheld, at evals of +/-2. The texture added is courtesy of Princess of Shadows at Deviant Art. I also cropped a bit of the sky.

  • Second Place in the “Houses of Worship” challenge in The World As We See It, or as we missed it November 17, 2009. / Featured in The World As We See It , or as we missed it November 12, 2009. / Top Ten in “Sunday Morning” challenge in Mood & Ambience October 18, 2009. / Featured in Live and Let Live September 22, 2009. / Featured in ! # 1 Artists of RedBubble! September 22, 2009. Best seen on full size This sweet little church, at the corner of Triadelphia and Sharp Roads in Glenelg, Maryland, stands empty. Probably built around 1900, it was most recently used as the home and studio of a local artist who has since gone to live in the sunnier climate of Mexico. Happily, the congregation of this beautiful little chapel didn’t die out, as so often happens, but instead grew too large for this structure and built a much larger church not far down the road. I was quite excited to have the opportunity to tour here July 26, 2009 when the realtor was holding an open house, as I’d driven past many times and had always wanted to investigate!! Image taken with the handheld Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, shutter 1/250, aperture f/8.0, exp -.33, iso 500. Post work included hdr from 4 images at +3, +1, 0 and -2 evals … all duplicated and adjusted in Photoshop. Subsequent Orton technique was applied in PS, as were three textures at various blendings, and the brushed-in clouds. Included below is a capture of one of the windows in which, if you look carefully, you can see a reflection of the church bell … / which was directly behind me as I shot the window … My thanks to Princess of Shadows on Deviant Art and Ghostbones of Flickr for the great textures and to Obsidian Dawn for the cloud brushes.

  • Rural northern Boulder County, Colorado Honest to God above, this was utterly amazing….I can’t really find the wards to describe the whole scene to you all but I will try my best. I had to handhold this, along with the other shots to come, my knee is totally kaput so using a tripod was pretty much out of the question, however that isn’t the only reason…as we were shooting last evening, the lightning was all over the place, and well there were times when I wanted to grab it and try, but thought better of it lol Tripods make for great Lightning conductors! lol The clouds were just insane, and I mean really crazy, this storm went severe dropping reports of funnel clouds to the north east of us and hail as well. It passed over our heads, but sure made for some utterly incredible atmospheric shots! So you take that, a Sunflower field the size of a small state, the sunset, a country road, and the foothills and mountains as a backdrop, and friends, you have quite a scene you will NEVER forget! Hope ya all like it! / —-John Minolta 5D / Minolta 18-70mm / CPL & ND4
