Taken a few miles east of Leicester, near Allexton. Its that time in the UK, just before the wheat gets harvested – heavy heads beginning to nod gently under the weight of the grain, and the weather unable to decide whether it is summer or not, threatening to flatten the crop, just it is ready. Leicestershire is full of distant horizons like this, and the Barley is all but in now, much of the ground already having been put under the plough in readiness for the next crop.

Taken on top of Blue Knob Mountain in Claysburg, PA with the Nikon D40x, using the 18-135mm lens on 9/20/08. Other than cloning off some dew drops, it’s pretty much as is from the camera.

Captured freehand in the Blackhouse Museum at Arnol, Isle of Lewis. Smoke from the peat fire in the centre of the main room is caught in the light from the only window. Historic Scotland site The museum is well worth a visit to get insights of what life was like in this typical old stone house. The so-called blackhouses did not have a chimney but the peat smoke rose up through the thatched roof. This had the added advantage of keeping the roof from rotting or rain from coming through. This is my homage to the generations of islanders who lived in these houses. Addtional information from Ranald: “The tar from the peat smoke made everything inside black, hence the name. The beasts were often kept at one end of the house, where the floor sloped down. The heat rising off them kept the smoke away. A very clever system.” Nikon D1X, Nikon 18-70 F3.5-4.5G. F3/8, 1/10s, 24mm, ISO 125. / Location: Arnol, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland, UK. / I’ve got this framed in large-format in my hallway. Captured in rural Boulder County, Colorado….let me just say this was honest to God unbelievable to photograph. I had to handhold these shots because of my bum knee and well, the lightning was going crazy right above me. But I managed to get some dang nice shots off. This being one of them. I am really happy with this one, I debated about a square crop, but in the end I figured why the heck not, nothing ventured, nothing gained, right folks? September 22, 2009. Best seen on full size This sweet little church, at the corner of Triadelphia and Sharp Roads in Glenelg, Maryland, stands empty. Probably built around 1900, it was most recently used as the home and studio of a local artist who has since gone to live in the sunnier climate of Mexico. Happily, the congregation of this beautiful little chapel didn’t die out, as so often happens, but instead grew too large for this structure and built a much larger church not far down the road. I was quite excited to have the opportunity to tour here July 26, 2009 when the realtor was holding an open house, as I’d driven past many times and had always wanted to investigate!! Image taken with the handheld Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, shutter 1/250, aperture f/8.0, exp -.33, iso 500. Post work included hdr from 4 images at +3, +1, 0 and -2 evals … all duplicated and adjusted in Photoshop. Subsequent Orton technique was applied in PS, as were three textures at various blendings, and the brushed-in clouds. Included below is a capture of one of the windows in which, if you look carefully, you can see a reflection of the church bell … / which was directly behind me as I shot the window … My thanks to Princess of Shadows on Deviant Art and Ghostbones of Flickr for the great textures and to Obsidian Dawn for the cloud brushes.

Best on Full Size Although the day started out pretty dismally, the sun eventually came out at The Keystone State – Pennsylvania shoot at Old Bedford Village, Bedford, Pennsylvania, October 24, 2009. I took this image inside one of the many reconstructed buildings on site as the skies were going from rainy to sunny. Camera used was the tripod-mounted Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, uv filter attached. Shutter was 1/2, aperture f/32, iso 640. Post processing included HDR from a single image, duplicated twice to evals of +/-2 in Photoshop. Light Orton and textures applied as well.
