Portfolio Clean Out - Your Vote Counts

I’m looking for nominations of what to cull out of my portfolio, I have my eye on a fair bit of my earlier work which well for me isn’t up to scratch. My difficult is I find myself to be my toughest critic so I’d like to open this up to anyone that wants to name any images they think don’t belong, I’ll compare that to my own list and then let the culling begin. I currently have 75 works for sale and I don’t know that feels like too much so I’m looking to cullt 10-25 at a guess, that said I don’t want to be like a overzealous gardener and prun it back to hard. So feel free to jump in and nominate any number of shots to go up onto the chopping block, if a image has already been nominated still list it as more votes will spell doom for the image in question.

The Muiderslot is a castle in the Netherlands, located at the mouth of the river Vecht, some 15 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam, where it flows into what used to be the Zuiderzee. It’s one of the better known castles in the Netherlands and has been featured in many television shows set in the Middle Ages. The history of the Muiderslot (Castle Muiden, where muiden means rivermouth) begins with Count Floris V who built a stone castle at the mouth of the river back in 1280, when he gained command over an area that used to be part of the See of Utrecht. The River Vecht was the trade route to Utrecht, one of the most important tradetowns of that age. The castle was used to enforce a toll on the traders. It is a relatively small castle, measuring 32 by 35 metres with brick walls well over 1.5 metres thick. A large moat surrounded the castle. A hundred years later, in 1370, the castle was rebuilt on the same spot based on the same plan, by Albrecht, Duke of Bavaria, who at that time was also the Count of Holland and Zeeland. The next famous owner of the castle shows up in the 16th century, when P.C. Hooft (1581-1647), a famous author, poet and historian took over sheriff and bailiff duties for the area (Het Gooiland). For 39 years he spent his summers in the castle and invited friends, scholars, poets and painters such as Vondel, Huygens, Bredero and Maria Tesselschade, over for visits. This group became known as the Muiderkring. He also extended the garden and the (plum-) orchard, while at the same time an outer earthworks defense system was put into place. At the end of the 18th century, the castle was first used as a prison, then abandoned and became derelict. Further neglect caused it to be offered for sale in 1825, with the purpose of it being demolished. Only intervention by King William I prevented this. Another 70 years went by until enough money was gathered to restore the castle in its former glory. The Muiderslot is currently a national museum (Rijksmuseum). The insides of the castle, its rooms and kitchens, have been restored to look like they did in the 17th century and several of the rooms now house a good collection of arms and armour. /

Black Marker and Felt Pen Concept: I did this portrait of Mel the Panda, I think he’s less exposed as compared to Ophelia the Owl and Phoebe the Bunny :D Mel is the one whom we can count on when we need a listening ear and when we can turn to for advice when we feel helpless and alone. I chose Mel to be a panda because like the pandas, he’s an endangered animal….not too many in this world :D He always dresses the same, black and white with polka dotted ribbon(unlike the other 2 :D), gives the rest the impression that he’s of a predictable and stable temperament. I decided to put on a special ribbon for him today, hope you like this little tweak :D / /

21 Days to Go

Hey All, Firstly I want to apologise for talking up my previous weekend of Beautiful goodness and never delivering, but a number of recent events, both in the RB community and around me have taken most of the shine of that story, so in respect I’m just skipping over that for now. I will say that I’m getting damn excited about the trip to Egypt! I have my visa, I have a brand new pack (for my birthday), got lots of cool travelling gear for Xmas and things are starting to get very real. I must admit I’m a little nervous, and the friend I’m meeting in Egypt to tour around with is current trapped in Kenya, so I pray he’ll be able to leave shortly (and safely). I’ve been doing a fair bit of reading, I’ve grown my beard out (its a shaggy mess at the moment). I have a new camera as a backup, a Canon G9, (so I’ve got a foot in both camps now). Its a great little camera for street photography and being a bit more discrete then the D200 and massive lenses attached. Not long to go! I’m hoping to keep a diary while I’m over there, and when I return post a series of illustrated travel stories, thats the intention, if it actually happens will see :) Take care everyone and a Happy New Year!

Counting down the days until our holiday!!!
by Karen CookWell I just had to share this with all you lovely people… my partner and I are VERY VERY VERY excited cos we’ve just booked a long-awai…
Well I just had to share this with all you lovely people… my partner and I are VERY VERY VERY excited cos we’ve just booked a long-awaited and well-deserved holiday for mid-June next year and will be gone for 7 magnificent weeks. We’ll be flying into Beijing and joining the Intrepid Travel Trans-Mongolian Express train trip which is 21 days in length, taking us through China, Mongolia and Russia, finishing in St Peterburg… in all the train travels about 8,000 mind-boggling km!!! The ITINERARY sounds bloody awesome and the sights we are going to see and experience are going to be just fantastic! A photographers dream :o) From St Petersburg we decided to continue our adventure and will be catching a train from there to Helsinki in Finland. We’ll spend 4 days there before flying to Dublin, hiring a car and driving up to the north of Ireland (to Derry) for about 5 days. We’ll finish off with 4 days in Leeds/Manchester where I’ll be able to visit a friend I haven’t seen in well… way too long… and finally we’ll have 3 relaxing/shopping/lazy days in Singapore before arriving home. Phew, I think we’ll need a holiday to recover! So, as well as saving madly to pay for the whole thing, I’m also hoping to be able to upgrade my Canon 20D to one of THESE – how awesome does it look!!! I’m just waiting on prices to be released… but I know I’m going to have to save hard, so baked beans on toast it could be for the next 8 months :o)

4 Days to Go till Egypt

Well my bags are semi packed, and I’m counting down the days with anxious anticipation. I have a hat, I have two travel towels and a baby face washer (A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch-hiker can have), sunscreen, insect repellent, various medications for upset stomachs, walking shoes, some well worn thongs, two cameras and a sense of adventure. In the last couple of days I’ve been pouring over my itinerary and various Egypt books, and I’m so excited and so nervous at the same time. The experience should be great, but I always worry before I leave that I’ll go and only take rubbish photos. Last trip I overcompensated by taking 22 thousand, and in the end got maybe 40-50 good shots out of it, I’ve got a far shorter period of time, and being on a organised tour less time of my own for stalking the good shots. I’m also going to be “offline” for a bit over two weeks, usually this would worry me in itself, but this time round I’m not as concerned, and the Internet and everyone will still be there when I get back. Oh and while I’m here, I have some long over due Leica images to share with you all. I’ve been slack recently and haven’t really been uploading as many images as I should (Egypt should fix that, I’ll probably have to cull my portfolio to make some room!) So my last roll of film from the Leica. My personal favourite image. / The Lovely Katie / The Block /
