Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Captain Billy Landing Cape York Peninsula, Far North Queensland. We camped at Captain Billy Landing on a lovely grassy clearing near the beach. It is renowned for being a windy spot and it was! A magic sunrise greeted us the next day! Well worth those 165 speed humps!! They used to load beef from the Old Laura Cattle Station onto ships from the jetty here at Captain Billy Landing back in the 1800’s. The jetty is now crumbling into the sea and only a small part of it remains. 100% of proceeds received from Redbubble in respect to sales of “Sunrise at Captain Billy Landing” will be donated to “thegreataustraliancancerbushwalk” for the Cancer Council. The council house was located in New Echota, Capital of the Cherokee Nation during the early 1800’s. New Echota was located in the Coosawattee District and was selected as capital because it was central to the Cherokee nation. New Echota was laid out in city form with the Council building, Courthouse and printing office in the center of town with private homes, stores, a ferry, and a mission station in the surrounding area. Unfortunately the Cherokee were forced to move to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears and all their land was taken over during the Georgia gold rush. I presently live in a place called Coosawattee on a ridge overlooking the Coosawattee River. The more I dig, the more interesting I find the history of the Cherokee Nation to be. I sometimes wonder what has gone on in the past where I live now. I am surrounded by places like Chief Vann’s home, Chief White Path’s Cabin, New Echota, and one of the big gold finds in the Georgia Gold rush. Dunfermline City Chambers is a building historically designed to be the centre of local government in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. In more recent times most of these functions have been devolved to other locations, but [as of 2008] the impressive edifice still houses the Council Chambers, the Burgh Court and Dunfermline’s Registrar Office. The building, constructed in the period 1875-79, was created by James C Walker who also designed the first Carnegie Library. It employs a harmonious composite of French, Gothic and Scots baronial architectural styles and features a prominent four-face clock tower. It was constructed on the site of an older Town House of 1771 which was in its turn built to replace the 17th century Town House, demolished as part of 18th century improvements to make way for Bridge Street. There are many features of historic and architectural significance in the building. The structure includes heraldic stones recovered from the demolished 1771 Town House. These are plausibly believed to have originated from the now derelict Royal Palace of Dunfermline a few hundred yards to the south. The finely designed interior of the City Chambers incorporates many notable features, in particular the oak hammer beam roof which provides the ceiling for the Council Chamber itself. The historic police cells, although no longer in use, have also been preserved. Furnishings include a number of notable artworks including busts of several Scottish sovereigns, a statue of Robert Burns, Sir Joseph Noel Paton’s painting, Spirit of Religion, and an early twentieth century portrait of King Malcolm and Queen Margaret. Council Overhang is a cave-like formation created by the Illinois River millions of years ago. It is located in Starved Rock State Park in Utica, Illinois. It is huge as you can tell by the size of my daughter in the blue shirt in back.

This 5”x8” pen and ink sketch includes a small volcanic cone ‘hill’ (the darker cone right side of sketch) that has a bit of American Indian history that fascinates me. In the early 1870’s A one armed U.S. Army general met with Cochise, a famous Apache chief, in an area on the eastern side of the Dragoon Mountains known as ‘Council Rocks’. In this half mile wide ‘bowl, surrounded by tall balancing boulders, the general and Cochise made a treaty regarding a reservation for the Apaches. As the General and his small Army detachment left the meeting and headed back to their fort, Cochise had a large white flag erected on top of ‘Treaty Hill”. It could be seen for up to a hundred miles in most directions and notified his small bands of warriors about his success with the treaty… and to not attack the soldiers on their way home. My 5.5”X8.5” Canson sketch book uses Universal Recycled acid free paper with a very fine tooth. As in everything I do, it’s all one big experiment!
This is Council House in Perth Western Australia, well part of it. Designed by Howlett and Bailey Architects, it was opened by the Queen in 1963 following the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. It has been the subject of much debate, mainly between the government and general public and the architect community. Dubbed an “eye-sore” by the punters it was scheduled for demolition until the RAIA (Royal Australian Institute of Architects) stepped in an rallied for it to be saved, I remember signing the petition myself some years back. Following a much needed renovation, it was (thankfully) admitted onto the State’s Heritage Register much I think to the govenment at the times disgust.
